LOS ANGELES — LAFC is headed to the Club World Cup. And Club América is going home. Less than a week afterfalling short in the Liga MX final, América suffered another blow — this time on foreign soil. Backed by a large supporters section here at BMO Stadium that at times drowned out the home team's fans, the Mexican giants pushed LAFC to the brink, but it was the MLS side that delivered in extra time with a Dennis Bouanga banger to seal the deal. In Saturday's high-stakes play-in game for León's vacated Club World Cup slot, LAFC edged América 2-1, with Bouanga scoring the decisive goal in extra time to send the Black and Gold to the expanded global tournament. 115' Denis Bouanga!!!⚽😱LAFC are on top with only minutes left in this matchLAFC 1-1 Club AmericaWatch the@FIFACWCPlay-In match NOW | FREE |https://t.co/i0K4eUtwwb|#FIFACWC#TakeItToTheWorldpic.twitter.com/7lzdCSza5d — DAZN Football (@DAZNFootball)June 1, 2025 For LAFC, it's redemption against a Mexican side in a high-profile setting after losing to León in last year's CONCACAF Champions Cup. The first real threat from LAFC came in the 18th minute after Sebastian Caceres' reckless studs-up challenge of Mark Delgado earned him a yellow card. After Delgado received treatment, LAFC's freekick from near center field found Nathan Ordaz inside the box, but his left-footed shot went just wide of the goalpost. It was the same Mark Delgado who in the 63rd minute would respond with his own ugly challenge to earn himself a yellow card. But Delgado's rough tackle of Erick Sanchez was inside LAFC's box. And after a VAR review of the play, a penalty was awarded. Brian Rodríguez, who spent four years at LAFC, drilled the penalty shot past Hugo Lloris to put América on the board. ¡Gol del América! And in the 115th minute, Bouanga found the winner. The match was arranged after León — originally set to represent Liga MX after winning the 2023 CONCACAF Champions League (now Cup) over LAFC — was ruled ineligible due to a FIFA rule prohibiting multiple teams from the same owner to be in the tournament. That opened the door for 2023 runners-up LAFC and América, the No. 1 team in FIFA's CONCACAF rankings at the end of 2024 CONCACAF Champions Cup. With the win, América joins a Club World Cup field that already includes Real Madrid, Manchester City andnewly crowned Champions League winners PSG. They will compete in Group D alongside Chelsea (England), Flamengo (Brazil) and Espérance de Tunis (Tunisia). In their first group stage fixture on June 16, América will face Chelsea inside Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. They'll follow that with a June 20 match in Nashville vs. Espérance and a June 24 tilt vs. Flamengo in Orlando. The 32-team tournament kicks off June 14 in Miami Gardens, Florida, with Inter Miami facing Egypt's Al Ahly.

PHOENIX (AP) — Luis García Jr. had a double and three RBIs during a10-run first inningfor the Washington Nationals, who held on late to beat the reeling Arizona Diamondbacks 11-7 on Saturday night. Washington has won 11 of 15 games and scored at least nine runs in four straight games. Arizona has dropped nine of 10. The Nationals' first 11 batters reached base and they scored nine runs before the D-backs recorded an out, which was the second-most in the big leagues since 1961. The Boston Red Sox scored 10 runs before the Florida Marlins got an out in a game on June 27, 2003,according to Elias Sports. Arizona's Brandon Pfaadt (7-4) lasted just eight batters, giving up eight earned runs on six hits. He also hit two batters. The Nationals sent 16 batters to the plate in the first and it took 30 minutes for the D-backs to get three outs. Arizona rallied with two runs in the fourth and five more in the sixth. Randal Grichuk's two-run homer cut it to 11-7. He finished with three hits. Washington starter Michael Soroka (2-3) retired the first 11 batters he faced before Geraldo Perdomo hitting a looping single into right field in the fourth. Josh Naylor followed with a two-run homer. Soroka gave up four runs on six hits and a walk through 5 1/3 innings. He struck out three. Washington's C.J. Abrams was hit by a pitch three times. James Wood, Robert Hassell III, Keibert Ruiz and Daylen Lile all had two hits. Key moment Pfaadt recorded two strikes on Abrams — the game's leadoff hitter — before hitting him on the foot with a pitch, starting the 10-run avalanche. Key stat Pfaadt's ERA ballooned from 3.90 to 5.05. D-backs pitchers hit five batters. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Denis Bouanga scored late in extra time and Los Angeles FC dramatically secured the final spot in the FIFA Club World Cup with a 2-1 victory over Club América in a play-in match on Saturday night. Igor Jesus tied it for LAFC in the 89th minute, slipping through traffic and converting a header for his first goal with his new club. After 24 tense minutes of extra time, Bouanga jumped into the play and fired home a deflected shot from the top of the penalty area in the 115th minute, setting off a wild celebration at BMO Stadium and sending LAFC to its first Club World Cup. LAFC will join English club Chelsea, Brazil's Flamengo and Tunisia's ES Tunis when group play begins in two weeks across the U.S. South. LAFC's victory is extraordinarily lucrative for the Major League Soccer power, guaranteeing at least $9.55 million in prize money for making the tournament field. The club also has a chance at nearly $100 million more in prize money from FIFA's nearly $1 billion pool. Brian Rodríguez put América ahead midway through the second half by converting a penalty kick against his former team, but Las Águilas fell short in front of thousands of supporters. One spot in the 32-team Club World Cup was open because FIFA disqualified León under its rules against participation by multiple clubs owned by the same entity. León and Pachuca are owned by the same group, and León lost its appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport four weeks ago after attempting to change its ownership structure. With a stadium full of raucous fans supporting both teams, LAFC and América were cautious in the first half, putting just one shot on target apiece. Rodríguez beat Hugo Lloris from the spot in the 64th minute, capitalizing on a penalty awarded following a video review of Mark Delgado's risky, spikes-up challenge on Erick Sánchez. Rodríguez, who came on as a halftime substitute after recently recovering from injury, spent parts of four seasons with LAFC from 2019-22 before the Uruguayan winger moved to América for a hefty transfer fee. LAFC got moving offensively when Olivier Giroud came on as a second-half substitute. The French star nearly tipped home a pass in the box in the 81st minute, but Luis Malagón thwarted him. LAFC cranked up its late pressure behind Bouanga and Giroud. Jesus, the 22-year-old Brazilian midfielder, finally beat Malagón with a header in the box. Lloris stopped a point-blank chance for Javairô Dilrosun in the second half of extra time shortly before Bouanga's winner. Tickets for the match were distributed equally between the clubs' supporters — and América has a large fan base in Los Angeles, where Mexican teams and players are greeted with massive support whenever they visit. América fans mobbed the south stands at BMO Stadium 90 minutes before kickoff, while LAFC's famed North End crowd was packed. Both sections set off fireworks and smoke bombs after kickoff, underlining the remarkable atmosphere and giving a taste of what's to come in June and July. The largest Club World Cup to date will be held across the U.S. as a precursor to the FIFA World Cup's return to North America in 2026. Inter Miami and the Seattle Sounders already qualified from Major League Soccer, while Pachuca and Monterrey already qualified from Liga MX. ___ AP soccer:https://apnews.com/soccer

Her excellence inside the pitching circle, however, came with a heavy heart. The 6-foot sophomore from West Des Moines, Iowa wears No. 17 in honor of her grandmother, who was born on Nov. 17, 1928. Despite being hundreds of miles away from Texas' campus, her grandmother watched every Longhorns game. When she'd get too nervous in a given moment to watch it live, she'd watch a replay of it later. As Kavan once said, "softball is her favorite part of most days. Her love and support for me knows no bounds." In just her second college season, Kavan has been the ace of a Texas team that will be one of just two remaining unbeaten squads left in the WCWS by the end of the day on May 31. The win against the Sooners improved her record to 26-5 this season, and she leads all Longhorns pitchers with a 2.40 ERA and 221 strikeouts. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Los Angeles Dodgers shortstopMookie Bettsfractured his fourth left toe and missed his second straight game Saturday. "The last couple days, it's been hard for him to even put on a shoe, so that's obviously why he's not in the lineup," manager Dave Roberts said. "But I still don't believe it's going to be an IL stint. I think day-to-day is fair right now." Roberts said Betts injured himself after the Dodgers returned from their road trip midweek. "It was something in the middle of the night in his house, in his bedroom," he said. "It was dark and he kind of hit something." Rookie Hyeseong Kim started in Betts' place Saturday against the New York Yankees. Shohei Ohtani throws 29 pitches in 2nd live batting practice since elbow surgeryNew Foto - Shohei Ohtani throws 29 pitches in 2nd live batting practice since elbow surgery

LOS ANGELES (AP) —Shohei Ohtanichecked off another step Saturday as he works toward making his pitching debut for the Los Angeles Dodgers. The two-way superstar faced hitters for the second time since elbow surgery, throwing 29 pitches at Dodger Stadium in a 25-minute session before the defending World Series champions played the New York Yankees. Ohtani threw 22 pitches in hisfirst live batting practicelast weekend in New York. The stadium music was turned off and everyone from teammates to workers to media watched Ohtani. A Los Angeles Police Department helicopter flew noisily overhead. Freddie Freeman's 8-year-old son, Charlie, stood in the outfield holding his glove. Kiké Hernández sat cross-legged behind the mound. Ohtani threw to seven batters from Single-A Rancho Cucamonga in a simulated setting. He came out of it well, according to manager Dave Roberts. "He's just using his entire arsenal, also with today doing the up-down, he's certainly well beyond where he was in spring (training)," Roberts said. Against his first batter, Ohtani fielded a grounder to the left of the mound and made throw to first where no one was. The second hitter laced a single to right. He gave up a few more singles. Roberts looked on from third base and pitching coach Mark Prior stood behind the mound. Ohtani paused at times to talk to Prior. Roberts guessed the right-hander's velocity was "somewhere in the mid-90s." "I think he would wishes his command would have been a little bit better," Roberts said, "but really positive day for sure." Roberts said Ohtani could throw another two or possibly three innings next Saturday. The three-time MVP isn't expected to pitch in a major league game until after the All-Star break in mid-July. "You still got to get to five or six innings, so we still got a ways to go," Roberts said. Ohtani was coming offa two-homer performancein the Dodgers' 8-5 series-opening win Friday night. He leads the majors with 22 homers. "I think the thing that's most impressive is his ability to compartmentalize," Roberts said. "He's essentially doing the work of two players and still to go out there and perform on the offensive side is pretty remarkable." Ohtani is recovering from surgery in September 2023, the second major operation on his right elbow since he arrived in the majors from Japan. He hasn't pitched in a big league game since Aug. 23, 2023, for the Los Angeles Angels. Ohtani is 38-19 with a 3.01 ERA and 608 strikeouts in 481 2/3 innings during five seasons as a big league pitcher. He had Tommy John surgery on his right elbow Oct. 1, 2018, and returned to a major league mound on July 26, 2020, though he was limited to just two starts during the pandemic-shortened season. He didn't speak with media after his session. ___ AP MLB:https://apnews.com/hub/mlb

Amari Avery has to borrow a friend's clubs and still manages to make cut in the U.S. Women's OpenNew Foto - Amari Avery has to borrow a friend's clubs and still manages to make cut in the U.S. Women's Open

ERIN, Wis. (AP) — Amari Avery had to borrow a friend's clubs for one of the biggest rounds of her life and still found a way to make the cut in the U.S. Women's Open. That was just part of an eventful weekend that also included an attempted break-in at the place where she was initially staying. "To say it was wild is putting it pretty nice," Avery quipped after completing her third round Saturday at Erin Hills. Avery's frantic Friday began at about 2 a.m. when she said her family had to notify the police about a suspicious person at the place in Milwaukee where they were sleeping. "My boyfriend, my mom, and my dad saw the person outside the door, so it was a little bit scary," Avery said. "We just kind of stayed back away from the front door, and we were just kind of hoping it would solve itself. It was nice that the guy ended up leaving and the police came and made us feel more safe." They then packed up their things while Avery's boyfriend, Gavin Aurilia, prepared to board a flight out of town. One problem: Aurilia inadvertently left with Avery's clubs instead of his own. Avery and Aurilia both have played collegiately at Southern California. "We use the same (bag) from USC, so it's obviously the exact same, it looks the exact same," Avery said. "I think it's equally my dad and my boyfriend's fault for not checking the bags. But they loaded it in the car, my dad took him to the airport, and he grabbed the wrong set. That was that, and we actually didn't realize until about like 12:15, before my tee time." Then the potential fallout from this oversight started to sink in. "I sat in my hotel at 12:30 like, 'I guess I am going to pull out from the U.S. Open after a pretty solid round,' " Avery said. "I was obviously devastated." Avery got rescued by former USC teammate Gabi Ruffels, who played Saturday morning and was unlikely to make the cut after finishing the first two rounds at 7-over par. "My agent asked, 'Do you want to use her clubs?' " Avery said. "I was like, 'Well, how did she play?' Because I was like, if she's playing good, no one in their right mind is giving me their clubs. I probably wouldn't, either, and I'm a nice person. "But unfortunately for her, she missed the cut, but it was fortunate for me and she's obviously a very class act, great friend of mine, so she lent me the clubs." Avery carded a 73 with the borrowed clubs in the second round, good enough to enable her to make the cut. She was playing her 17th hole of the day when darkness forced a suspension of play Friday night. Avery finished the round Saturday morning after her own clubs already had been returned to Wisconsin, though United States Golf Association rules required her to finish that round with the same equipment she'd used at the start of it. Avery got her own clubs back because Aurilia's mother had caught a flight from Phoenix on Friday to bring them to her. "I can't thank her enough," Avery said. "I can't thank my whole inner circle enough. To hop on a flight like that is crazy, and I'm just super grateful." Avery actually posted a better score with the borrowed clubs in the second round than she did with her own clubs in the third round. On a day when scores across the board were much weaker than they'd been in the first two rounds, Avery posted a 76, though she nearly aced the 189-yard, par-3 No. 6. "Based on the score and just based on how I felt yesterday, I felt like Gabi's clubs were honestly pretty good," Avery said. "I joked with her last night after I called her and I said, 'Obviously, thank you so much for lending me the clubs.' I was like, 'I might take your putter.' Like I love my putter, like everyone knows that. But I don't know, my college coach said I gained putts yesterday. "I was like, maybe I should take her putter and maybe like an iron or two. But, no, it was nice to have my clubs back." ___ AP golf:https://apnews.com/hub/golf

Piastri earns pole position at Spanish GP ahead of McLaren teammate NorrisNew Foto - Piastri earns pole position at Spanish GP ahead of McLaren teammate Norris

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — Max Verstappen has his work cut out to keep hisSpanish Grand Prixstreak going after Oscar Piastri claimed pole position ahead of McLaren teammate Lando Norris on Saturday. The McLaren lockout of the front row gives the papaya-colored cars a big advantage over Verstappen, whose Red Bull will start Sunday's race from third on the grid. New rules for stiffer front wings in the race appeared to have zero impact on McLaren's speed over a single lap. Verstappen was never at the top of the time charts in the final session of qualifying, which turned into anotherduel between the McLarens. Points leader Piastri was behind Norris until he peeled off a blistering final effort and grabbed the edge on the starting grid. The race promises to be an equally scintillating fight between the teammates who have won six of the first eight races of the season and putVerstappen's grip on F1 in jeopardy. Piastri leads Norris by three points in the standings through the first third of the season. "It is going to be tough tomorrow," Verstappen said. "That doesn't mean we are not going to try." It was the Australian's fourth pole of the season. Piastri leads the field with four race victories, although Verstappen and Norris have topped the last two grands prix. Piastri won from pole position in China and Bahrain, while he also pipped a pole-sitting Verstappen to win in Saudi Arabia and Miami. His only blemish was losing to Verstappen after taking pole in Imola two rounds ago. The sensation of the F1 season blazed to a pace-setting lap in Spain that was two-tenths faster than Norris. Now he must make good on that by protecting his advantage on the long run from the starting grid to the first right-hand corner. "It has been a good weekend so far. The car has been mega, and glad to put in some good laps as well," Piastri said. "It is a long way to Turn 1 so I got to make sure I make a good start." Norris knows how difficult that can be. He took the pole last year, only forVerstappen to sweep past himat the start and hold on to win the race for a fourth time overall. "It is normally interesting, and we have a lot of quick guys behind us," Norris. Right behind Verstappen, Mercedes' George Russell and Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton start from fourth and fifth. 'Squeezing everything out of the car' Verstappen, who is 25 points off Piastri's lead, has won at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya for the past three years. But when asked if he hoped to be closer to his McLaren rivals during qualifying, Verstappen responded with a terse "No." "We were lacking all weekend compared to them," Verstappen said. "I'm here, squeezing everything out of the car. We had a decent Friday, made some final changes to the car but it wasn't enough to challenge for the pole." Verstappen had pointed to Barcelona as another race in which he hoped to challenge the McLarens following his win in Italy two rounds ago, and Red Bull boss Christian Horner said his team needed to stay close to the front-runners to have a chance to make gains later in the season. The four-time world champion now has to get by both McLarens and hold them off if he wants to cut into their leads. Yuki Tsunoda bottomed out for Red Bull and had the slowest time in the opening segment of qualifying. The Japanese driver will start from last place in a big blow for Verstappen's new teammate. Carlos Sainz also got culled early and will start from 18th in his Williams. That was the Spaniard's worst qualifying result of the season. Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli clocked the sixth best time, followed by Ferrari's Charles Leclerc, Alpine's Pierre Gasly, and Racing Bulls rookie Isack Hadjar. Home favoriteFernando Alonsoclosed out the top 10 for Aston Martin. Less flex, little impact There was a lot of talk in the paddock this week ahead of F1 reducing the flexibility of the car's front wings, which at high speed can reduce the effect of drag on a car. But the change didn't lead to any shakeup of the pecking order — and earned the scorn of seven-time world champion Hamilton. "It's just wasted everyone's money," Hamilton said. "It's literally changed nothing. Everyone's wings still bend." ___ AP auto racing:https://apnews.com/hub/auto-racing

Aaron Rodgers 'has not affirmatively' told the Steelers he's signingNew Foto - Aaron Rodgers 'has not affirmatively' told the Steelers he's signing

Aaron Rodgersis an expert in playing the waiting game. The headline-making quarterback possesses the remarkable talent of making news, whether he speaks or not. In fact, Rodgers is generating more interest this offseason because of his silence rather than anything else. That remains a constant theme for the four-time NFL MVP, who hasn't been known for his play on the field in recent years, but rather everything that comes with the experience off it. It was believed Rodgers would sign with thePittsburgh Steelersafter theNew York Jetsreleased the future Hall of Fame signal caller. As the clock continues to tick, it's anyone's guess whether he plays for Pittsburgh or announces his retirement. During an appearance on "The Rich Eisen Show" on Friday,NFL Network's Tom Pelissero spoke about Rodgers'immediate NFL future and why there is still a good bit of uncertainty. "I have been told that he has not affirmatively told the Steelers that he's coming," Pelissero said. "There's all these signs that he's coming, but he's not affirmatively said, 'Hey, June 9, book me the ticket, I'm coming in and I'm gonna join this team.' That has not happened as of this point." Pelissero added that the Steelers are operating under the assumption that Rodgers will eventually sign, but he pondered the idea that the quarterback could change his mind given his unique nature. Options have dried up on the open market for Pittsburgh, who put all their eggs in the Rodgers basket this offseason.Russell Wilson left to sign with the New York GiantsandJustin Fields inked a deal with the Jets, essentially emptying their quarterback room from last season. Kirk Cousinsfigures to be the other potential option, but the insider pointed out that the price for the Atlanta Falcons' backup remains too high and that the Steelers are committed to the idea of Rodgers right now. ESPN's Jeremy Fowler said on Saturday that the Steelers are just hanging around right now. "When I talk to people with the team they say the same thing, that they have had contact with Aaron Rodgers,"Fowler said. "They've remained optimistic that he will be a Steeler, but there is just nothing fast and firm yet on him signing with the team. So they continue to developMason RudolphandWill Howardin OTAs." Fowler noted that the situation has been unpredictable. Steelers' mandatory minicamp is slated for June 10-12, leaving little margin for any bumps in the road going forward. Rodgers previously visited the Steelers' facility, but has offered little certainty surrounding the situation in his few public appearances. He said on "The Pat McAfee Show" in April thatretirement was still a possibilityand that he was dealing with some personal things behind the scenes. Rodgers also made an appearance on "The Joe Rogan Experience" but didn't discuss anything football related. More recently, he offered up some information on the"You Know What I Mean"podcast, saying he wouldn't play for the Chicago Bears, but there is a team that makes a trip to the Windy City next season. As the season quickly approaches and the offseason begins to fade, the Steelers are stuck in a holding pattern. After all, only Rodgers knows what will happen and what his future holds. Ben Shelton, Frances Tiafoe and Tommy Paul try to add to the best French Open for US men in decadesNew Foto - Ben Shelton, Frances Tiafoe and Tommy Paul try to add to the best French Open for US men in decades

PARIS (AP) — It's been 30 years since three American men reached Week 2 at the French Open. Back then, it was Andre Agassi, Michael Chang and Jim Courier — each of whom won the tournament at some point. This go-round, the trio is Tommy Paul, Ben Shelton and Frances Tiafoe, all scheduled to be on court Sunday in fourth-round action at Roland-Garros. "Yeah, about time," joked Jessica Pegula, who advanced Saturday to give the U.S. at least three women in the round of 16. "It's exciting to see. Obviously you want to see your fellow countrymen do well on the other side, and I'm always actually keeping up with them quite a lot. So I hope they keep it going." Who do the American men left in the French Open play on Sunday? Won't be easy, of course, perhaps especially for the 13th-seeded Shelton, the big-serving lefty who goes up against defending champion Carlos Alcaraz of Spain for a berth in the quarterfinals. No. 12 Paul takes on No. 25 Alexei Popyrin of Australia; No. 15 Tiafoe meets unseeded Daniel Altmaier of Germany. Not since Courier and Pete Sampras in 1996 have multiple Americans made it to the quarterfinals in Paris. Historically, the slower red clay used at the French Open has not been particularly kind to men from the United States. Some of that is simply that they tend to grow up playing mostly on hard courts, which reward a big-strike style of hard-hitting tennis, and so they are not as accustomed to the patience and footwork required on the red dirt. "I really do think everyone can play on this surface," Paul said. "I remind myself it's just tennis." But for years, Paul said, he was not excited to participate in the French Open. And that's coming from someone who won the event's junior title as a teen in 2015. "Now I come over here and I look at it as an opportunity," said Paul, 28, who grew up in North Carolina. "I think all the Americans do." Andre Agassi in 1999 was the last US man to win the Roland-Garros title Agassi, in 1999, was the last American man to win the trophy at the French Open — and the nation hasn't had a male finalist since then. Before that, it was Courier in 1991 and 1992. Before that, it was Chang in 1989. And before that, you have to go all the way back to Tony Trabert in 1954 and 1955. American women have had much more success: 15 singles titles in the Open era, including seven for Chris Evert and three for Serena Williams, plus 13 runner-up showings, most recently by Coco Gauff in 2022. "It's super critical not to worry about what was and just worry about what is," said Tiafoe, a 27-year-old from Maryland who twice made the semifinals at the hard-court U.S. Open but began his Roland-Garros career by going 0-6. "Currently we're at the French Open, and just try to be elite. This is where it counts. So guys just believe it." Unlike in New York, where Tiafoe is the center of attention and a fan favorite, a scene he loves — "There is so much anticipation; there's so much energy" — Paris, he said, presents "a different vibe" and "more of a low-key kind of thing." So far, so good. Ben Shelton tries to stop the defending champion in Paris There wasn't likely to be anything low key about Shelton vs. Alcaraz in the main stadium, Court Philippe-Chatrier. They are among the flashiest, most entertaining athletes in men's tennis at the moment. Alcaraz is seeded No. 2. At 22, the same age as Shelton — who won an NCAA title for the University of Florida — Alcaraz already owns four Grand Slam titles, with at least one each on the clay at the French Open, the grass at Wimbledon and the hard courts at the U.S. Open. "That's a pretty cool opportunity, pretty cool experience, that not a lot of people get or see in their lifetime," said Shelton, a semifinalist at the U.S. Open in 2023 and the Australian Open in January but 2-2 at Roland-Garros before this year. "For me, I'm definitely going to enjoy it and go out there and see what I can do, because I'm starting to gain some speed, gain a little bit of traction, on this surface and starting to see some of my best tennis. I like to think of myself as dangerous whenever I get to that place." ___ Howard Fendrich has been the AP's tennis writer since 2002. Find his stories here:https://apnews.com/author/howard-fendrich. California track-and-field championships draw limited protest over trans student's participationNew Foto - California track-and-field championships draw limited protest over trans student's participation

CLOVIS, Calif. (AP) — California's high school track-and-field state finals will award one extra medal Saturday in events where a transgender athlete places in the top three, a rule change that may be the first of its kind nationally by a high school sports governing body. The new California Interscholastic Federation policy was written in response to the success of high school junior AB Hernandez, a trans student who competes in the girls high jump, long jump and triple jump. She led in all three events after preliminaries Friday. The CIF said earlier this week it wouldlet an additional student competeand medal in the events where Hernandez qualified. The two-day championship kicked off in the sweltering heat at high school near Fresno. The atmosphere was relatively quiet Friday despite critics — including parents, conservative activists and PresidentDonald Trump— calling for Hernandez to be barred from girls competition leading up to the meet. There was some pushback Friday. A group of fewer than 10 people gathered outside the stadium ahead of the meet to protest Hernandez's participation. Some of them wore "Save Girls' Sports" T-shirts. At one point as Hernandez was attempting a high jump, someone in the stands yelled an insult. An aircraft circled above the stadium for more than an hour during the events, carrying a banner that read, "No Boys in Girls' Sports!" The rest of the night ran smoothly for Hernandez, who finished the triple jump with a mark close to 41 feet (13 meters), nearly 10 inches (25 centimeters) ahead of her closest competitor, San Francisco Bay Area junior Kira Gant Hatcher. Hernandez also led in the long jump with a mark close to 20 feet (6 meters) to advance to the final. She advanced in the high jump, clearing 5 feet, 5 inches (1.7 meters) with ease. She did not address the press. California at center of national debate The CIF rule change reflects efforts to find a middle ground in the debate over trans girls' participation in youth sports. "The CIF values all of our student-athletes and we will continue to uphold our mission of providing students with the opportunity to belong, connect, and compete while complying with California law," the group said in a statement after announcing its rule change. Arecent AP-NORC pollfound that about 7 in 10 U.S. adults think transgender female athletes should not be allowed to participate in girls and women's sports at the high school, college or professional level. That view was shared by about 9 in 10 Republicans and roughly half of Democrats. The federation announced the rule change after Trump threatened this week to pull federal funding from California unless itbars trans female athletesfrom competing on girls teams. The CIF said it decided on the change before then. The U.S. Department of Justice also said it would investigate the state federation and the district that includes Hernandez's high school to determine whether they violated federal sex discrimination law by allowing trans girls to compete in girls sports. Some California Republicans also weighed in, with several state lawmakers attending a news conference to criticize the federation for keeping Hernandez in the competition and a Republican gubernatorial candidate planning to attend Saturday's finals. California law allows trans students to compete on sex-segregated sports teams consistent with their gender identity. The federation said the rule would open the field to more "biological female" athletes. One expert said the change may itself be discriminatory because it creates an extra spot for "biological female" athletes but not for other trans athletes. The federation did not specify how they define "biological female" or how they would verify whether a competitor meets that definition. Hernandeztold the publication Capital & Mainearlier this month that she couldn't worry about critics. "I'm still a child, you're an adult, and for you to act like a child shows how you are as a person," she said. Another student breaks a record California's state championship stands out from that of other states because of the number of competitors athletes are up against to qualify. The state had the second-largest number of students participating in outdoor track and field in the nation during the 2023-2024 school year, behind Texas, according to a survey by the National Federation of State High School Associations. Olympians Marion Jones and Tara Davis-Woodhall previously set state championship records in the long jump in 1993 and 2017, respectively, both surpassing 22 feet (6.7 meters). The boys 100-meter dash heats were also a highlight Friday. Junior Jaden Jefferson of De La Salle High School in Concord finished in 10.01 seconds, about .2 seconds faster than a meet record set in 2023. Jefferson's time won't count as a record unless he can replicate his results in the final. ___ Austin is a corps member for The Associated Press/Report for America Statehouse News Initiative.Report for Americais a nonprofit national service program that places journalists in local newsrooms to report on undercovered issues. In high school, Karl-Anthony Towns got sick of learning experiences. Winning followed.New Foto - In high school, Karl-Anthony Towns got sick of learning experiences. Winning followed.

It was just over 55 years ago that a hobbledNew York Knickswarrior provided an emotional jolt that propelled his team to victory in Game 7 of the 1970 NBA Finals. That big man was Willis Reed, and despite finishing with just four points, his mere presence is credited for elevating New York to that championship – one that remains on the Knicks' Mount Rushmore of triumphs. On Thursday, another Knicks star,Karl-Anthony Towns, fought through an injuryand willed New York to a 111-94 win – dominating the Pacers with a 24-point, 13-rebound performance in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference finals. While the scenarios may be different, their "win-at-all-costs" mentality and toughness under less-than-ideal circumstances are similar. For Towns, the desire to win was forged by his parents, Karl Towns and the late Jackie Cruz-Towns. When he was a junior at St. Joe's Metuchen during the 2012-13 basketball season, I produced "Center of Attention," a documentary about Karl-Anthony. During my reporting, I spent time with his family and soon learned that the dining room in their Piscataway, New Jersey, home was where many of life's lessons were imparted. That season, I observed Karl-Anthony's intense focus on winning and no-excuses attitude begin to crystalize after a loss to East Brunswick High School. I was working on the documentary at the family's home when his mother suggested that the loss, the second to East Brunswick that season, should be a learning experience. Her son wasn't having it. "We lost to East Brunswick the first day, we lost to East Brunswick today. It's always, 'You got to learn from this.' Well, sooner or later, you got to stop learning," the then-17-year-old calmly explained to his mom. "It's just like you being in college. OK, you go to college – you learn a lot. If you don't go and use it in the real world, your college education was useless... "And until we learn – actually learn, and decide to go on the street and use what we learn, and actually beat an elite team, for one time, this season, then we will not be what we need to be for the year." Jackie appeared pleased with Karl-Anthony's reasoning. After 19 practices and 12 subsequent games, Towns' St. Joe's Metuchen and East Brunswick faced each other for a third time – this one for the conference championship. St. Joe's Metuchen won, 66-63, in double-overtime. Indiana's Gainbridge Fieldhouse, the site of Saturday night's Game 6 of the Eastern Conference finals, will no doubt be a hostile environment for Towns. Will he use what he's learned and lift the Knicks once again? We'll see soon enough. This article originally appeared on USA TODAY:Opinion: Young KAT got sick of learning from losses. Wins followed.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — A'ja Wilson had 35 points and 13 rebounds and the Las Vegas Aces bounced back from a 20-point loss five days earlier to beat the Los Angeles Sparks 96-81 on Friday night. This was the highest-scoring game for Wilson, who also had six assists, since her 41-point performance Sept. 1 at Phoenix. Jackie Young added 26 points for the Aces (3-2) and Chelsea Gray had 15. Kelsey Plum led the Sparks (2-5) with 17 points, Odyssey Sims scored 15 points and former Dearica Hamby had 14. Plum and coach Lynne Roberts were hit with technical fouls for arguing with officials on separate occasions. The Aces, expected to be WNBA title contenders, entered this game off a slow start to the season that included a102-82 loss at Seattleon Sunday. Las Vegas went on a 23-2 run before the Sparks closed the first quarter with a 15-5 spurt of their own to draw to within 28-21. But the Aces add 15-3 run in the second period to go up 54-36, and the outcome was not seriously in doubt after that. Los Angeles made a late push, getting as close as eight points with 4:07 left. This wasPlum's first game in Las Vegassince she was part of the three-team trade in January in which the Aces acquired Loyd from Seattle. The 14th-seeded Fils, who had been the last man from France in the bracket, announced his withdrawal on Friday without offering details then about the extent of his injury. "We decided with the team it was better to stop now, because if I'm stopping now, I could stop for only four to six weeks," the 20-year-old Fils said Saturday. "If I was pushing myself too much, I would probably stop for a couple of months. ... Had to make a choice." With Fils out, No. 17 Andrey Rublev received a walkover into the fourth round. Fils had been dealing with back painfor a while, and things got worse during his five-set victory over Jaume Munar on Thursday. "I gave everything. I couldn't go for more," Fils said Saturday. "At the end of the second set, I could feel that the back was not good at all." He said he doesn't think he needs surgery. Dodgers castoff, White Sox revival: Miguel Vargas makes most of second chanceNew Foto - Dodgers castoff, White Sox revival: Miguel Vargas makes most of second chance

BALTIMORE – There's no disputing that Chavez Ravine is baseball's Blue Heaven, a wonderland of wins, World Series titles and the home of an organization that operates both optimally and aggressively. That doesn't mean, though, that every ballplayer fits snugly into the Los Angeles Dodgers' blueprint. It is a ruthlessly impatient operation, where a championship is the only acceptable conclusion by year's end as a high-priced mélange of free agents buttressed by elite prospects aims for the game's apex. Miguel Vargasknows how easily it is to get lost in the march to greatness, to be the one holding up the conveyor belt until the club has no choice but to cast him aside in favor of a more championship-ready part. He spent seven years in the Dodger organization, playing sporadically in 129 big league games over three seasons before the inevitable transition from prospect to asset, and hardball heaven to record-setting baseball hell: Traded last July in a three-way deal to the 121-lossChicago White Sox, a swap that netted L.A. postseason heroesTommy Edmanand relieverMichael Kopech. Vargas produced 0.0 WAR in his L.A. tenure but did not come away empty-handed; he should receive a World Series ring when the White Sox visit L.A. in a month and retains friendships with countless players and staff in the organization, most notably Mookie Betts and Andy Pages. And while Vargas produced perhaps the two least productive months by a big-league regular after his trade to White Sox, he's found so much more: A runway to succeed, a devastating swing and a tight group of young players with which to grow. Vargas knows that was probably never possible in L.A., a fact he greets pragmatically. "Every baseball player needs a little bit of time to show up in the major leagues," Vargas tells USA TODAY Sports. "Some of them, it's now, they go out there and show it right away. Other guys, they need some time, learning the game, knowing how it's played. "When you're on a team that doesn't have time for that type of stuff, it's hard to grow and be better." And perhaps Vargas had to journey to the bottom in order to find himself. It wasn't just that Vargas dropped 44 games in the standings when on July 29 he was dealt from the 63-44 Dodgers to the 27-81 White Sox. Nor that the White Sox's woes were only just beginning, as they lost 39 of 53 games once Vargas joined them to set a modernmajor league record with 121 losses. No, it could be argued, for the final two months Vargas might have been the worst hitter on the worst team in history. He had 14 hits in 135 at-bats, striking out 41 times to just 17 walks, with a .104/.217/.170 line and a 13 adjusted OPS. The bad times spilled into this season, when the White Sox – still on a subterranean floor of their rebuild – rolled Vargas out at third base and saw him produce 11 hits in 79 at-bats, a .139/.236/.203 line over his first 22 games. If you're into math, that's a 25-for-214 sample stretching across two seasons. At that point, it would be easy to posit that a 25-year-old slugger who once cracked the top 30 of baseball's greatest prospects was simply suspect. A miss in an industry filled with them. But back to that onramp. White Sox coaches continued working with Vargas and, in a fateful meeting in Minnesota, convinced him to make a relatively minor mechanical fix: He held his hands higher in his set-up, aiming to leave himself less vulnerable to fastballs in the middle and upper thirds of the strike zone. It sounds like granular mechanical minutiae, but it's now been five weeks since that fateful summit meeting with hitting coaches in Minnesota, and Vargas remains unlocked: He's on a 38-for-121 tear, with eight homers, a .371 OBP and .904 OPS in his last 32 games. Sure, that's not quite 20% of a season, and pitchers will undoubtedly adjust, forcing Vargas to maneuver like he does in one of his many clubhouse games of chess. Yet it also represents the most sustained stretch of production for a prospect who might just reattach the "vaunted" tag in front of his name. "It worked right away, and I trusted it," says Vargas. "That's all a hitter needs, is having that confidence. You can do some damage when you have that mindset. "Anything can happen." Including inserting yourself a bit more firmly into a team's plans. The White Sox optioned longtime first baseman Andrew Vaughn – mired in a .189/.218/.314 funk – to Class AAA on May 23, and Vargas has split time between both corner infield positions. "He's always been a confident guy. I think he understands he's a good player and sees the game in an advanced way," says Will Venable, the White Sox's first-year manager. "Now, after he made that adjustment, he's impacting the baseball how he's envisioned it. "He's going into every game with all the tools and abilities he always believed he had and going out and playing great baseball." Vargas's promising, non-guaranteed – but certainly sunnier – outlook mirrors the White Sox at large. The clubhouse felt almost every one of last year's 121 losses hard, a campaign that saw manager Pedro Grifol get fired and spare parts like Kopech and starter Erick Fedde spun to other teams. That's the environment Vargas found himself in when the White Sox penciled - more like etched - his name in the lineup. Great opportunity, but also a lot to take on for a guy who never got more than 94 at-bats in a single month during his stint with the Dodgers. "I think I put a lot of pressure on myself," says Vargas. "I have way more expectations than what I did here last year. "I was trying to navigate my way up. And I was a little bit frustrated." Even the greatest players - see Juan Soto - can take a minuteadjusting to new environs. It's even more a whirlwind when the only organization you've known casts you aside. "It's hard when you get traded. Especially the first time," says White Sox assistant general manager Josh Barfield. "You're used to an organization, you're familiar with everybody, the surroundings, the coaches and players. There's comfort in that. "When you're the headliner in a trade, not only do you have to get used to a new league, a new environment, but you're also trying to prove to everybody that you were worth the trade. Prove it to the fan base. It adds a lot of pressure. "At the time he came over he wasn't getting to play a lot, and probably didn't have the feel and confidence he has now. When a guy comes over, it's hard to know what's real and what just takes time." Or perhaps a bit of home cooking. Vargas did not necessarily set significant physical or developmental benchmarks for the offseason after his initial two-month White Sox stint. He needed home, more than anything, and so he returned to his Miami base, where his mother and father, along with his brother, grandmother, aunts, uncles and cousins awaited. At one point, 12 people filled Casa de Vargas this winter, a balm for a ballplayer needing a mental reset. Vargas and his father, Cuban baseball legend and two-time Olympic gold medalist Lazaro Vargas, left Cuba in 2015. Other family eventually followed, and now the unit is intact in South Florida. "I think they are the most important thing for me," says Vargas. "Having them on my side, spending time with them, getting figured out that this is just a small window, this year. When you have your loved ones by your side, spending time with them, it makes me feel better. "Coming into this year, I just wanted to enjoy the game and it's been good times out there." He's not wrong. Even as the White Sox have posted an 18-39 record – a still-ghastly 51-111 pace – the club's makeup augurs better times. The offseason deal shipping Garrett Crochet to Boston yielded their current leadoff hitter, shortstop Chase Meidroth, and elite catching prospect Kyle Teel, who probably isn't far away from a promotion. The future may ride even more heavily on left-handed pitching prospects Noah Schultz and Hagen Smith, each ranked in the top 30 of all prospects. But for now, it's the young position players hoping to take cues from veterans and set a tone. On an off night in Baltimore, Meidroth and Vargas went out to dinner, ostensibly a night away from the game. Naturally, they talked hitting. "He loves talking about hitting and the game. He's an awesome guy," says Meidroth. "It was just a matter of time before he cracked through. He's an unbelievable hitter, unbelievable player, great teammate." And with each passing day, the player with the .889 career minor league OPS gains a little more knowledge on how to stick for good, be it through workshopping his swing or gleaning what he can from the Austin Slaters and Michael A. Taylors populating the clubhouse. The onramp, finally, is long enough for Vargas's ample skills. "It's hard to create confidence if you don't have the success," says Barfield. "Now you see him go to the plate and it's like when he was in the minor leagues: He looks like he's in control of the at-bats, he's getting pitches and not missing them, where before he was. "It doesn't matter who he's facing now. He feels like he's going to have success in every at-bat and you can see that in how he's carrying himself." Anyone who feared theNew York Yankeeswould repeat history — blowing a big lead against theLos Angeles Dodgerslike they did in the fifth inning of the 2024 World Series — could breathe easy Friday. They blew the lead in the sixth inning this time. In their first meeting since a 2024 World Series that ended with the Dodgers raising a trophy and the Yankees swallowing instant infamy, both teams followed a similar script inan 8-5 Dodgers win. First came the Yankees runs, then the Dodgers comeback, aided and abetted by New York's miscues. Aaron Judge,Austin Wells,Trent GrishamandPaul Goldschmidtall hit homers off Dodgers starting pitcherTony Gonsolinin the first three innings, giving the Yankees a 5-2 lead despitea first-inning response from Shohei Ohtani. Ohtani got things started with his second homer of the game, pushing him to 22 on the season and a Dodgers record-tying 15 in May. That was the beginning of a painful inning for the Yankees, as the next four Dodgers reached base to tie the game and leave runners on the corners with no outs. ATommy Edmanfielder's choice andMax Muncyintentional walk loaded the bases with one out, setting upMichael Confortofor some heroics. Conforto walked, giving the Dodgers a 6-5 lead and the Yankees another mistake to ponder. The Dodgers beat the Yankees, yes, but they and their fans also talked a not-small amount of trash about how the Yankees blew Game 5. The Yankees took a bit of umbrage over that, and had a great chance to respond on the field Friday. Instead, they just gave the trash-talkers more material. The win improves the Dodgers' record to an NL West-best 35-22, while the Yankees are now 35-21, still tops in the AL East. The next game of the series is Saturday at 7:15 p.m. ET.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Shohei Ohtani hit two home runs, including a solo shot leading off a four-run sixth inning when the Dodgers rallied to take the lead, and Los Angeles defeated the New York Yankees 8-5 in their World Series rematch on Friday night. Aaron Judge and Ohtani became the first reigning MVPs to homer in the first inning of a game. Judge's 19th homer of the season traveled 446 feet into dead center off Tony Gonsolin (3-1). Ohtani answered with a 417-foot shot on his first pitch from Max Fried. Austin Wells homered and Trent Grisham added a two-run shot in the second, giving New York a 4-1 lead. Paul Goldschmidt, another former MVP, homered leading off the third, making it 5-2. But just like in Game 5 of last year's World Series, the Yankees blew the lead. Ohtani's homer keyed the offense in the sixth, when the Dodgers batted around. Teoscar Hernández and Will Smith singled before Freddie Freeman's RBI double chased Fried. Andy Pages followed with a game-tying RBI single off Jonathan Loáisiga (0-1). With the bases loaded, Tim Hill walked Michael Conforto on six pitches, forcing in Pages with the go-ahead run to make it 6-5. The Dodgers tacked on two more in the seventh. Will Smith singled, Freeman doubled and both scored on Pages' two-run single off Yerry De Los Santos. Freeman was safe in a close play at the plate after he made a wide turn into the grass coming around third. Alex Vesia pitched the ninth to earn his second save. The teams were meeting for the first time since the Dodgers beat the Yankees to win their eighth world championship. Key moment Dodgers reliever Tanner Scott came on with runners at the corners in the eighth and retired pinch-hitter DJ LeMahieu on a flyout to center for the third out. Scott has been rocky lately with blown saves. Key stat Gonsolin gave up four homers, one shy of his team record set on Aug. 18, 2023, against Florida. European soccer heavyweights clash in Champions League finalNew Foto - European soccer heavyweights clash in Champions League final

Inter Milan and Paris Saint-Germain will meet at the UEFA Champions League final in Munich on Saturday to compete for club soccer's most prestigious trophy. For the Parisian team, a victory would cement the squad in the pantheon of soccer royalty. Paris Saint-Germain, colloquially known as PSG, was once mediocrity personified. Before 2011, the team languished in the French soccer league Ligue 1 and twice narrowly escaped relegation to a lower division. But 14 years ago, everything changed. Qatar Sports Investments, a state-backed subsidiary of Qatar's sovereign wealth fund, bought the team and injected billions of dollars. Superstars like Zlatan Ibrahimović and David Beckham joined in the early days of PSG's new era. They lost Messi, Mbappé and Neymar — but may finally win club soccer's biggest prize Knicks playoff games have turned into photo shoots for A-list celebrities Oklahoma City Thunder advance to NBA Finals More recently, the Qatari cash brought in the tantalizing trio of Lionel Messi, Neymar and Kylian Mbappé. In the 14 seasons since the new ownership took hold, PSG has dominated its domestic league, winning Ligue 1 11 times. Despite clobbering the competition in France, a Champions League title has always evaded PSG. It was close in 2020, losing to German giant Bayern Munich in the final. Failure to bring home that trophy led neutral fans to dismiss its merits. PSG has long been considered the rich kid on the field, with fancy cleats but without the play to back it up. Then came the summer of 2023, when PSG began its transformation. Messi and Neymar departed the French capital, with Mbappe soon following their lead. In came Spanish tactician Luis Enrique, who implemented a cultural revolution. Gone were the days of superstar players and a reliance on individual skill and big moments to carry the team to victory. Cue young, tenacious talent who weren't as recognizable to fair-weather fans but were willing to graft and play as a team. Out went the world's most recognized soccer name, Messi. In came the less sexy Georgian winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who's last name haunts soccer commentators around the globe. "I think that the team has grown and reached an even higher level than what we were expecting," Enrique said in aninterview with his club on Monday. "We all want to make history and to win Paris Saint-Germain's first-ever Champions League," he added. Standing in the way of PSG's unprecedented success is a member of soccer's old guard, Inter Milan. Unlike PSG, Inter is more used to soccer's biggest stage, taking home the European championship three times in its vaunted history, most recently in 2010. Its last appearance in a Champions League final was just three seasons ago. Despite his club's comfort in the limelight, its coach, Italian Simone Inzaghi, isn't underestimating the competition. "PSG is an excellent team with incredibly strong players. They have quality, a coach who has instilled clear playing principles," the manager said at a press conference on Monday. "We will prepare as best as we can, knowing it will take a great Inter performance to win." Inter will need to pull itself up from its bootstraps on Saturday after heartbreak a week ago. The Italian juggernaut narrowly missed out on winning its domestic league, pushing rivals Napoli to the brink and missing out on the Serie A championship, referred to as the "scudetto," by just one point. But it'll be bolstered by the health of its captain and talisman, Argentine Lautaro Martínez. The 27-year-old World Cup winner is Inter's leading goal scorer this season in the Champions League, with nine goals in 14 matches. Known for his tenacity and nicknamed "El Toro," Martínez shocked Barcelona in the semifinals by playing through injury and notching the opening goal in the second leg. Nearly a month later, Inzaghi said his star player was fit and raring to go despite not playing in Inter's final game of the Italian season. But Inter isn't reliant on just its star player. Like PSG, Inter leaned on teamwork and organization to propel its success this season. Throughout all competitions, all 21 of Inter's outfield players have scored a goal, a nearly unprecedented statistic in modern soccer. Inzaghi believes that cooperation and camaraderie are what make his squad special this year. "I like the way they stick together on the pitch: the joy in victories and the tears in defeats," Inzaghi said of his team. "In the final, there's no room for mistakes. … We'll need intensity, determination and all the qualities this team has shown throughout our journey."

SEATTLE (AP) — Carlos Correa hit a two-run home run in the 10th inning and the Minnesota Twins overcame a three-run deficit to beat the Mariners 12-6 on Friday night. Correa pounced on a first-pitch sinker from reliever Casey Legumina (4-3), sending it into the seats in left field. The Twins scored four more runs to cap off the victory. Mariners closer Andres Munoz, who had yet to give up an earned run this season, saw that accomplishment go by the wayside when Willi Castro hit a two-run home run. Trevor Larnach then tied it with an RBI single. The late Minnesota charge overshadowed a spectacular evening from Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh. With a pair of home runs that upped his season total to 21, Raleigh became the first catcher in major league history to reach at least 20 home runs before the end of May. Unfortunately for Seattle, Raleigh's two and three-run home runs were not enough to stymie a Minnesota comeback and keep Twins reliever Jhoan Duran (4-1) from getting the victory. Key moment Prior to Larnach's tying single, outfielder Byron Buxton —who was reinstated from the concussion list prior to the game— stole second base. By moving into scoring position with two outs, Buxton was able to score with ease on Larnach's hit. Key stat Raleigh is the third player in franchise history to have 20 home runs before the end of May, joining Alex Rodriguez and Ken Griffey Jr. Up next Seattle right-hander Bryce Miller (2-4, 5.22) makes his return from the injured list Saturday night against right-hander Bailey Ober. ___ AP MLB:https://apnews.com/hub/MLB

Dodgers star Mookie Betts fractures toe by stubbing it in dark bathroom, won't go on ILNew Foto - Dodgers star Mookie Betts fractures toe by stubbing it in dark bathroom, won't go on IL

The Los Angeles Dodgers have another injury on their hands, but one that apparently isn't as bad as it sounds. Former MVP Mookie Betts fractured his toe after stubbing it against a wall while talking in a dark bathroom Wednesday night, he told Dylan Hernández of the Los Angeles Times on Friday. However, he expects to miss only two days, as the issue is only pain management. Mookie Betts told me that he has a fractured toe but expects to be back in a couple of days. "Just pain," he said. He said he banged his toe against a wall walking to the bathroom in the dark. — Dylan Hernández (@dylanohernandez)May 31, 2025 In a sport that features plenty of odd injuries at home, that is definitely one of them. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts confirmed to reporters that Betts is not expected to go on the injured list, but won't play for the rest of L.A.'s current series against the New York Yankees, perESPN's Alden Gonzalez. Roberts told reporters before the game,an 8-5 comeback win over the Yankees, that Betts had stubbed his toe Wednesday and was undergoing X-rays, which ended up revealing the fracture. With 14 players already on the injured list, all of them pitchers, the Dodgers don't need another injury. Roberts lamented the issuevia The Athletic: "It just keeps coming," Roberts said. "It's Murphy's law. But yeah, this is a weird one." Even if Betts misses only a couple more days, that still means he would miss the final two games of a marquee series for MLB between the Yankees and Dodgers. If he had been in the game Friday, the two teams would have made history with the first game to feature three former MVPs in each lineup: Betts, Shohei Ohtani and Freddie Freeman on the Dodgers and Aaron Judge, Paul Goldschmidt and Cody Bellinger on the Yankees. Of course, Betts and the Dodgers don't care about that as much as MLB's TV partners do. It's been a mostly down season at the plate for Betts, an eight-time All-Star, seven-time Silver Slugger and six-time Gold Glover. He's slashing .254/.338/.405 in 53 games this season, with all three numbers representing career lows. However, he has also been supplying much-needed defense at shortstop for the Dodgers, who will feel the loss heavily if Betts has to miss more time than he thinks.

PARIS (AP) — TheFrench Openisn't the only sports event in Europe drawing attention from tennis players:The Champions League finalwill decide the continent's best soccer club, and one of the two teams involved Saturday night is Paris Saint-Germain, whose stadium is a couple of blocks from Roland-Garros. CountNovak Djokovicamong those rooting for PSG against Italy's Inter Milan, and he hoped to be able to tune in on TV to watch the big clash that'll be held in Munich, Germany. So Djokovic made that preference known to the people in charge of arranging the program at the clay-courtGrand Slam tournament he's won three times— a common practice, especially among the sport's elite. They often ask to be scheduled at a certain time. Or to avoid a certain time. "I will definitely watch it if I'm not playing (in the) night session. Yeah, that will be nice," Djokovic said with a big smile. "FYI, Roland-Garros schedule." Hint, hint. Except his plea went unheeded: When Saturday's order of play was released Friday, 24-time major championDjokovic's third-round match against Filip Misolicwas the one picked for under the lights at Court Philippe-Chatrier due to begin at 8:15 p.m. local time, 45 minutes before Inter Milan vs. PSG starts. Others who begged off from competing at that hour got their wish. Although one, Arthur Fils, the 14th-seeded Frenchman who grew up near Paris and is a big PSG fan, wound up pulling out of the tournament because of a back injury after being placed in an afternoon match against No. 17 Andrey Rublev. "We have many requests from players" every day, tournament director Amélie Mauresmosaid. "There's no fixed rule. We try to accommodate everyone as much as possible. That includes requests from players, broadcasters and spectators. ... It's a real puzzle, I won't lie." Coco Gauffsaid she doesn't often ask for a certain time slot, but when she does, it's usually related to competing in singles and doubles on the same day (the American won theFrench Open doubles titlelast year but isn't playing doubles this time). The2023 U.S. Open champion, who is currently No. 2 in singles, has noticed that events tend to listen more to elite players than others. "If you're ranked a little bit higher, they'll hear more of your input, for sure," Gauff said. "To be honest, I think it's rightfully deserved. I feel like if you do well on tour, win so many tournaments, you should have a little bit more priority when it comes to that." Except even the very best of the best don't always have success with these sorts of things. Madison Keys, who was the U.S. Open runner-up in 2017 andwon the Australian Openin January, knows what it's like to be ignored. "Sometimes the request goes (in), they write it down, and they say, 'OK,'" but then don't do anything about it, Keys said. "I really think that it's just kind of up to what the tournament wants, what TV wants, things like that," she added. "Sometimes you kind of get what you ask for. And other times, you get the complete opposite." Just ask Djokovic. "Whatever they schedule me, I have to accept," he said earlier this season. "I think I earned my right to ... (communicate) with the tournament management, where I can express what I would like, depending on a given day, depending on the opponent." ___ Associated Press writer Tom Nouvian contributed to this report. ___ Howard Fendrich has been the AP's tennis writer since 2002. What is a post-June 1 cut in the NFL? What you need to know ahead of roster movesNew Foto - What is a post-June 1 cut in the NFL? What you need to know ahead of roster moves

NFLteams began their organized team activities (OTAs) to close out May as players across the league put pads on for voluntary workouts. With theschedule releasein the rear view, there are few milestone days until the start of the regular season. One of the first key dates is June 1, when teams can move on from high-cost veterans who may not be part of the franchise moving forward. QuarterbackAaron Rodgersis the best example of this in 2025. TheNew York Jetshave a new coaching staff and general manager andinformed him they will release him as a post-June 1 cut. That means the four-time MVP quarterback can move on from New York after two seasons with theJets. Critically, they designated him as a post-June 1 release to ease the cost of getting out of his contract early. Here's why post-June 1 designations are important in the NFL: RAVENS:Coach John Harbaugh explains 'complex' decision to release Justin Tucker This is when an NFL team releases a player on June 2 or later. In doing so, the team can spread out the player's dead cap money over more time. Dead cap money is the monetary charge to the salary cap for a player who is no longer on the roster. It commonly comes from signing bonuses, which are guaranteed, owed to players who are released, traded or retired. NFL teams can prorate bonuses in contracts for up to five years. They're often paid upfront but the team spreads the salary cap charge evenly over the full duration of the contract to keep from overloading one single year of the salary cap. But if a team releases a player before the end of their contract, they owe the remaining bonus money against the salary cap and have to account for it in one single year. This is considered dead money. By waiting until after June 1, they can spread this out over two years and reduce the immediate charge on the salary cap for a player who is no longer on the team. This incentivizes teams to release high-price players later on in the offseason to create more salary cap flexibility. Using Rodgers as an example, the Jets were to able to spread out his dead money over the next two seasons. They'll owe him $14 million in 2025 and $35 million in 2026 rather than $49 million in 2025 alone. 'A DISTRACTION':Caleb Williams addresses book saying he wanted to avoid Bears Because the cap penalties are reduced for making moves after June 1, trades can also be impacted this time of the year. Players can re-work their contracts ahead of trades –Bryce Huffdid as much withhis trade from Philadelphia to San Francisco– but their original teams could carry a lower cap penalty for trading a top player early. For the sake of an example, say theChicago Bearswant to trade tight endCole Kmetafter taking tight endColston Lovelandin Round 1 of the 2025 NFL Draft.(To be clear, this is completely hypothetical and there are no reports of Chicago looking to deal Kmet.) If Chicago traded him before June 1 and did nothing to amend his contract, he would carry a $4.8 million dead money hit on the 2025 salary cap. If they waited until after June 1, he would carry a $1.8 million dead money hit on the 2025 salary cap. Rodgers has been confirmed as a post-June 1 cut this offseason. He may not be alone, though. Here are few players who could end up being cut after June 1 with contract information provided byOverTheCap. CBJalen Ramsey,Miami Dolphins:This one almost seems a foregone conclusion to Ramsey's tenure in south Florida. He signed a $72 million extension in September, but entering his age-31 season, he could end up elsewhere in 2025. Miami would save nearly $10 million in dead money by cutting him after June 1. CBJamel Dean,Tampa Bay Buccaneers:Dean's missed nine games in two seasons after signing a four-year contract extension. Tampa Bay drafted multiple cornerbacks as well and could turn the page on the five-year veteran. Cutting him after June 1 would save Tampa Bay $4.6 million in dead money. EdgeCameron Jordan,New Orleans Saints:Jordan is as reliable player as any on the Saints roster, even as he enters his age-36 season. But the Saints have a new coaching regime in place and may look to move on from the aging star. In waiting until after June 1 to cut him, New Orleans would reduce his dead money hit from $28.53 million to $9.77 million. Not bad for a team constantly over the cap. TETaysom Hill,New Orleans Saints:Another longtime Saints player could be on the move come next week. New Orleans could reduce Hill's dead money hit from $17.7 million to $7.98 million and free up $9.8 million in cap savings by cutting him after June 1. WRTyreek Hill,Miami Dolphins:This would be a surprising move given Hill's status as the top pass-catcher in Miami, but he could be a cap casualty this offseason ahead of his $51.89 cap number in 2026. Cutting him before June 1 would cost the Dolphins a combined $84.19 million in 2025 but waiting until after June 1 would reduce that penalty to $53.06 million. They could also trade him after June 1 and free up $2.2 million in cap space with no penalties. This article originally appeared on USA TODAY:What is post-June 1 cut in NFL? Trio of Americans push forward at French OpenNew Foto - Trio of Americans push forward at French Open

No. 12 seed Tommy Paul, No. 13 seed Ben Shelton and No. 15 seed Frances Tiafoe won Friday to ensure at least three Americans will reach the French Open's Round of 16 at Roland Garros in Paris. Paul won a five-setter for the second straight round, defeating Russian No. 24 seed Karen Khachanov 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (7), 3-6, 6-3 in four hours and seven minutes. In the previous round, Paul rallied past Hungary's Marton Fucsovics 4-6, 2-6, 6-3, 7-5, 6-4. Paul's biggest opponent has been the lower abdominal injury he has been fighting through for most of the tournament. But he joked to reporters after beating Khachanov that he felt "like a million bucks." "I love this stuff, it's so much fun playing out here, honestly," Paul said. "Not all matches are four hours long, but that was an awesome battle on both ends of the court. We both played well and that's what it's all about." Facing a tough third-round opponent in Khachanov, Paul won 69 of 100 first-service points, saved 9 of 15 break points and converted 6 of 12 opportunities to break the Russian's serve. Paul's next match will be against No. 25 seed Alexei Popyrin of Australia, who eliminated Portugal's Nuno Borges 6-4, 7-6 (11), 7-6 (5). Tiafoe, meanwhile, won an all-American matchup against No. 23 seed Sebastian Korda 7-6 (6), 6-3, 6-4. "I think we are all pushing each other and working hard," Tiafoe said of the current crop of American male tennis stars. "There's a window in the game, a lot of guys see a lot of opportunity and it helps when you see peers do well. It's becoming a normality that we are going deep in Slams and having a look in, it's not a surprise anymore." Though Tiafoe reached the U.S. Open semifinals in 2022 and 2024, he has enjoyed less success at the other Grand Slams and this marks his first time reaching the fourth round at Roland Garros. Next up for Tiafoe is Germany's Daniel Altmaier, a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, 6-2 winner over Serbian Hamad Medjedovic. Shelton turned back Italian qualifier Matteo Gigante 6-3, 6-3, 6-4 -- hitting 10 aces and winning 37 of 47 first-service points (78.7 percent) along the way. Of the three Americans clear to the round of 16, Shelton has the toughest task ahead: a fourth-round date with No. 2 seed Carlos Alcaraz. The Spaniard stumbled just a bit in the third set before finishing off Damir Dzumhur of Bosnia and Herzegovina 6-1, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. "The first two sets, I was under control, feeling great, playing great. Then I think he started to play deeper and more aggressively as well, and I got down in my energy," Alcaraz said. "Then it was really difficult for me to push myself, and I had to fight and give everything that I had inside. But I'm just proud of myself to get the win at the end." No. 8 seed Lorenzo Musetti of Italy dropped a set before getting past Argentina's Mariano Navone 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-2. No. 10 seed Holger Rune of Denmark pushed the envelope even further, squeaking past Frenchman Quentin Halys 4-6, 6-2, 5-7, 7-5, 6-2. --Field Level Media
