Spaun was the early clubhouse leaderafter firing a 4-under 66, and there's a whole bunch of contenders within a few shots of the lead heading into Friday's second round. But the course became part of the story as well. The thick rough and tricky greens proved to be treacherous and humbled some of the world's best golfers. Plenty of big names, led by Rory McIlroy, struggled at various points over the opening 18 holes and have ground to make up in order to qualify for the weekend. The 156-golfer field will be cut down to the top 60 and ties before the third round begins, which is different than the top 70 and ties used as the cut line by the PGA Championship and British Open and top 50 and ties at The Masters.
