SINGAPORE (AP) — Chinese 12-year-oldYu Zidihas won a bronze medal at the swim world championships, an astounding feat for a girl who would be a sixth- or seventh-grade student depending on the school system. Yu earned the medal by swimming in the prelims of China's 4x200-meter freestyle relay team. She did not swim in the final on Thursday — China placed third behind winning Australia and the United States — but gets a bronze medal as a team member. She's been close to winning an individual medal, placing fourth in both the 200 butterfly and the 200 individual medley. She still has the 400 IM to swim. Brent Nowicki, the executive director of World Aquatics, said the governing body would look at its age-limit rules. The limit is now 14, but athletes can reach the worlds if they surpass a tough time standard. "I didn't think I'd have this conversation, but now I think we have to go back and say is this appropriate?" he said this week in Singapore. "Is this really the right way to go forward and do we need to do other things? Put other guardrails up? Do we allow it under certain conditions? I don't know the answer." He called Yu "great." He also said officials had to be "careful" about the age issue. Friday's session will be missing the two big stars of the meet so far — France'sLeon MarchandandSummer McIntoshof Canada. Both have no final swims. Five finals were set for Friday. Some of the attention will go to Evgenila Chikunova, swimming as a Neutral Athlete. She holds the world record in the 200 breaststroke where has the top time entering the final. The top challenger is American Kate Douglass. South African Pieter Coetze is the favorite in the men's 200 backstroke. Yohann Ndoye-Brouard of France and Hurbert Kos of Hungary were the next quickest qualifiers. The other finals are in the women's 100 free, the men's 200 breaststroke, and the men's 4x200 relay. __ AP sports:https://apnews.com/hub/sports

SEATTLE (AP) — Seattle reliever Trent Thornton was injured while coming off the mound on a ground ball in the ninth inning Thursday night and was carted off the field during theMariners' 6-0 winover the Texas Rangers. Thornton was using crutches to get around the Mariners' locker room after the game and the team did not have an official diagnosis of the lower left leg injury he sustainedon the grounder hit by Adolis Garciawith two outs. Thornton said he feared it was a significant Achilles injury and that he would have an MRI on Friday. "It's probably the Achilles, but that's just speculation, so I'll find out tomorrow," Thornton said. "Very frustrating." Thornton entered the game to start the eighth inning and retired the first five batters he faced. The right-hander then had a full count on Garcia before the righty hitter hit a grounder on his 95 mph fastball on the lower outside corner. "I threw the pitch, and as soon as I turned, I thought I broke the guy's bat and it hit me in the back of the leg, and I fell," Thornton said. Thornton said his first reaction at that point was to try to look at his leg to see what had happened. "I tried to get up and just couldn't even put pressure on it at all," Thornton said. "It didn't hurt. It's just achy and numb. But I guess I don't know. I'm still trying to process this a little bit, and I'll find out more tomorrow." Mariners manager Dan Wilson said he thought Thornton pitched "fabulous" before the injury. "We'll find out more tonight," Wilson said. "Hoping for the best." ___ AP MLB:https://www.apnews.com/hub/MLB

Todd Marinovich, former phenom QB-turned-cautionary tale, steps out from under his own myth in new bookNew Foto - Todd Marinovich, former phenom QB-turned-cautionary tale, steps out from under his own myth in new book

The bond between fathers and their athletic-genius children is a complex, fragile and often treacherous one. If the father pushes too hard, the child rebels. If the father doesn't push hard enough, the child might never reach their astronomical potential. And either way, the traditional protective and nurturing role of the father becomes transactional rather than emotional. When fathers take an active interest in their children's athletic development, approval and support are conditional; blasting all those reps and showing up big at game time are what's mandatory. The resulting generational wreckage can last much longer than any career ever could. Before Tiger Woods and his father Earl, before Venus and Serena Williams and their father Richard, andlongbefore the feel-goodtale of Home Run Derby champ Cal Raleigh and his pitching pop, there came Todd Marinovich and his father Marv — the ultimate sports-dad cautionary tale. Nationally famous long before he graduated high school, Todd Marinovich became the grim answer to the question:What if you attempted to genetically engineer an NFL quarterback? The answer, in Marinovich's case, was chaos, chaos that still echoes today more than three decades later. Marinovich, a Southern California quarterback who played his college ball at USC and took snaps in the NFL for the Raiders, crashed and burned shortly into his NFL career, a victim of his own bad choices and — most everyone assumed — the immense pressure his father Marv placed on him practically from birth. [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] The truth, however, is far more complex and, to Marinovich's mind, far more favorable to Marv, who died in 2020. Marinovich — once dubbed the "Robo QB," or, even less charitably, "Marijuanavich" — has at last put his own story, in his own words, into print. "Marinovich: Outside the Lines in Football, Art, and Addiction" documents, in painful detail, the battles that the onetime quarterback and present-day artist fought throughout his career and continues to fight even now — with addiction, with perception, with himself. It's a harrowing but ultimately impressive and inspiring look at reconciling a public image with personal belief. "My most fundamental flaw was both a tremendous blessing and a horrible curse, but it was my reality," he writes. "Without the zeal accompanying obsession, who knows if I would've succeeded in football? Someone else could have been the first college sophomore in history to declare for the NFL Draft. Yet, on the flip side, there wouldn't have been a soul-crushing dozen arrests, five incarcerations, and over seven trips to rehab." There's a reason, then, that he begins the book with this epigram: "This book is an act of self-love after decades of self-defiance."(Disclaimer: Marinovich and this writer share an agent.) For Marinovich, now 56, training began virtually at birth. His father, a former strength coach with the Raiders, developed a relentless regimen designed to maximize Todd's potential and hone his discipline. But early in his autobiography, Marinovich makes sure to draw a line in the sand: "No one pushed me into football, least of all my dad, Marv," he writes. "I chose it. Any suggestions to the contrary were lies offered freely by the media to manufacture a Greek tragedy." And yes, the media dove deep into the Marinovich story, starting long before he suited up for USC. Even as a high schooler, Marinovich was drawing national attention. "That was a really trippy time for me, because I was so shy going into high school," he told Yahoo Sports recently. "And thenarticles were talking about my diet, like I was a freak show — 'He's never had a Big Mac!'It just wasn't true. I was healthy, and I ate healthy, but, you know, living in America, you're going to have a Big Mac." During this time, Marinovich honed his ability to remain cool under pressure. An immensely talented basketball player, he played in dozens of hostile gyms, sinking last-second shots to win games in front of rabid crowds. It's the kind of training you can't teach, you just have to experience. "I felt really comfortable when the time was running out thatI want the ball," he recalls. "Not everybody wants the ball when time's running out. And that's OK. Just give it up, just pass it to the guy that does." As much as he loved basketball, however, Marinovich loved football even more. Speaking today, he notes that there's an almost otherworldly component to the game when it's functioning at its highest. "It's truly spiritual," he says. "It's 11 of us who are out there at once. It's so special when everyone has just got your back. All you've got to do is handle your guy, don't let the guy down next to you. You're looking at guys in the eye, and they know that you are not going to let them down. You're going,I'm going to die trying not to let you down, bro." At his finest, Marinovich was something to behold at quarterback. He threw for 9,914 career yards in high school, a mark that was a national record at the time. (It's since been nearly doubled.) Marinovich threw for 2,477 yards his senior year, more than contemporaries John Elway, Jim Kelly or Dan Marino did in theirs. In two years at USC, he crafted some instantly indelible memories — a last-second drive to beat Washington State in 1989, a triumphant 45-42 victory over rival UCLA in 1990. Those were good days for Marinovich and anyone in the Marinovich business. He was winning nationwide acclaim and shaking off his shyness to become a fixture on the L.A. party scene. He counted Charlie Sheen and Flea among his friends, and he was an unmistakable redheaded presence wherever there was a party to be had. "There were some really amazing next-level times that I had before it got really bad," he laughs, "and that's just, that's all I'll say." But the cracks were already starting to show. He engaged in an on-camera shouting match with his head coach in what was then called the John Hancock (now Sun) Bowl on the last day of 1990. A few weeks later, he was busted for cocaine possession, but still got selected in the first round of the 1991 NFL Draft. He saw little NFL action, playing in just eight regular-season games, with one playoff appearance, over parts of two seasons. He threw for eight touchdowns and nine interceptions, plus a zero-TD, four-INT game against the Chiefs in a 1991 wild-card game. He dodged NFL investigators, often with grimly comical results — he would use teammates' urine to pass drug tests, but got popped when one of his teammates gave him urine while drunk at four times the legal driving limit. After multiple failed drug tests and failed attempts at rehab, Marinovich was suspended for the 1993 season, and never played in the NFL again. He attempted to catch on with the Canadian Football League, the Arena Football League and other organizations, but nothing stuck. Eulogies for his career pointed the finger at Marv, but Marinovich is adamant that the blame belongs on himself, and only himself. "Marv was a thorny scapegoat, as he'd delivered the genes and created the environment offering addiction fertile ground," Marinovich writes. "He could be a ruthless tyrant obsessed with perfection, but ultimately, his criticism was child's play. The most damaging voice came from within. At the height of addiction, I needed drugs to silence my mind as much as others require air." These days, Marinovich lives on the Big Island of Hawaii, hanging out with his dog and creating art. (Check out his workon Instagram.) Creating art isn't a bad life, he admits. "Art takes me away," he says. "I can escape into a place that … it's hard to describe, but time is non-existent in this place, and there's a flow to it. It's kind of similar to athletics, there's a flow to athletics. But with art, there are no rules, and in football, there are." Todd Marinovich remains one of football's great what-ifs. But even though his NFL career was a spark at best, he still tries to look back on his days at quarterback with pride. "For me, it's truly about the experience," he says. "And I had some just beautiful, amazing — all the adjectives — experiences that the game has given me, and I'm grateful for it." "Marinovich: Outside the Lines in Football, Art, and Addiction," by Todd Marinovich with Lizzy Wright, goes on sale Aug. 5.

Chargers QB Trey Lance leads list of Hall of Fame Game's winners and losersNew Foto - Chargers QB Trey Lance leads list of Hall of Fame Game's winners and losers

NFL football is back. Sort of. Sort of NFL football. Regardless, the annualPro Football Hall of Fame Gamewas the first time any of the league's teams had met between the lines since Super Bowl 59 – and, sadly, Thursday night's contest was somehow exponentially less suspenseful than thePhiladelphia Eagles' one-night dismantlingof theKansas City Chiefs' dynasty in February. TheLos Angeles Chargers' 34-7 shellacking of theDetroit Lionsin Canton, Ohio, didn't feature many players likely to contribute much to those teams this season. But hey, let's celebrate the sorta kinda return of NFL football anyway with a few of the winners and losers now that the league's preseason is officially underway: The high point of his NFL career was being the No. 3 overall pick of the 2021 draft by theSan Francisco 49ers. Since then, Lance has been held back by injury, inexperience and lack of opportunity – Brock Purdy taking advantage of his absence with the Niners before Lance sat behind Dak Prescott for two years with theDallas Cowboys. Balling out in a preseason game won't erase years of frustration for Lance, but he flashed the talent commensurate with a man taken so high in the draft – ripping the ball downfield, making good decisions and showing off his mobility. And, yes, he was playing against fellow backups, but the poise, confidence and joy was unmistakable as Lance finished 13-for-20 for 120 yards and two touchdowns through the air. Trey Lance finds KeAndre Lambert-Smith for the TD!@ProFootballHOFGame on NBCStream on@NFLPlus+ Peacockpic.twitter.com/ypV9fC3Ds7 — NFL (@NFL)August 1, 2025 Thursday's performance won't necessarily vault him past Taylor Heinicke to be Justin Herbert's primary backup for the Bolts. But Lance is playing for a coach, Jim Harbaugh, who's a former quarterback with a reputation for maximizing his passers. It was just 13 years ago that Harbaugh rolled with little-known dual-threat QB Colin Kaepernick over former No. 1 pick Alex Smith, a decision that propelled the 49ers all the way to Super Bowl 47. Just sayin'. The undrafted Chargers rookie corner carried his training camp momentum over into his professional debut, picking off a pass and returning it 60 yards to set up LA's second first-quarter touchdown. And make no mistake, there are jobs and reps to be won in this secondary. we see you, rook📺 |@nflonnbcpic.twitter.com/KZO2qZ3t6D — Los Angeles Chargers (@chargers)August 1, 2025 Earlier on Thursday, the HOF announced that KeyBank will sponsor a new event center, its construction scheduled to begin later this fall. The Hall hopes the venue, which will have nearly 20,000 square feet of space, will be open in time for the induction of the 2027 class of Hall of Famers. Heat and rain weather have been known to regularly disrupt enshrinement ceremonies – and the Hall of Fame Game, too – in recent years. A game that's been plagued and/or canceled by inclement weather, poor field conditions, COVID-19 and even the 2011 lockout in recent years was functionally played without a hitch. For a change. He last played in the NFL in 2022, suffering a torn ACL during a jet ski accident in the summer of 2023. Now trying to make the Chargers' roster, Miller-Hines' versatility fueled a positive first step Thursday. He had 79 all-purpose yards on 11 touches, getting eight carries and catching a pass while returning one punt and one kickoff. A fifth-year reserve linebacker for the Lions, he was a bright spot for Detroit's defense, making four tackles − including a sack and another for a loss. With Malcolm Rodriguez still recovering from a torn ACL, Stuard could create an opportunity to get on the field this season when Detroit loads the box. Lions coach Dan Campbell allowed Stuard to return the night's opening kickoff, which he advanced 26 yards … before fumbling. The Chargers were in the end zone five plays later. There's a reason linebackers don't return kickoffs, Coach ... though, to Stuard's credit he brought the next one back 36 yards. But overall, a tough outing for Detroit's special teams, Jakobie Keeney-James also muffing a punt on a night when the Lions finished with five turnovers. Neither Kyle Allen, who started behind center for Detroit, nor Hendon Hooker distinguished themselves while trying to earn the nod to back up Goff, the Lions' QB1, this year. Heading into his seventh season, Allen's experience should serve him well. And yet he served up a pair of bad interceptions instead − and both were poor decisions, not the functions of playing with bottom-of-the-roster players. And Hooker, a third-round pick two years ago who effectively took a medical redshirt as a rookie, still needs to show he's ready for a bigger role. He was also picked off, though his INT can be fairly attributed to rookie WR Dominic Lovett, who had the ball taken away from him downfield. The HOF Game typically pits two teams sending at least one former star into the Hall, and longtime Bolts TE Antonio Gates will be enshrined Saturday as will San Diego native Eric Allen. But not only did no Lions go in this year, two players who victimized them for years – former Green Bay Packers WR Sterling Sharpe and former Minnesota Vikings DE Jared Allen – will be honored. Sorry, Lions fans, you'll have to take pride in the fact Gates hails from Motown. All NFL news on and off the field.Sign upfor USA TODAY's 4th and Monday newsletter. New York Knicks forward Mikal Bridges has agreed to a four-year, $150 million extension,ESPN's Shams Charania reported Thursday. SNY initially reportedthe 28-year-old was eligible for a maximum four-year, $156 million extension. But, per Charania, Bridges took a slight discount to help New York's roster-building efforts. The Knicks had a window from July 6 to June 30, 2026, before Bridges was set to enter free agency, to secure a new contract with him. The new deal includes a player option for 2029-30 and a trade kicker, according to Charania. Bridges initially found his way to New York across the East River when he landed in Brooklyn from Phoenix in exchange for Kevin Durant. He spent five seasons with the Suns before getting traded to the borough south of Manhattan. The former Villanova Wildcat averaged 26.1 points per game in 27 games for the Nets upon his arrival and 19.6 points per game after starting in all 82 games the following season. Bridges wastraded to the Knickslast offseason for Bojan Bogdanović, five first-round draft picks and a second-rounder. The move reunited Bridges with his former college teammates, Josh Hart and Jalen Brunson. In his first season in blue and orange, Bridges proved to be a dynamic role player for the Knicks, averaging 17.6 points, 3.2 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game. His defense also shined in the Knicks' playoff run before they eventually fell to the Indiana Pacers in the Eastern Conference finals. Bridges averaged 15.6 points, 4.5 boards, 0.9 blocks and 1.7 steals per game in this year's postseason. Bridges' extension comes after the Knickshired Mike Brownto replace Tom Thibodeau as their head coach. The team has also added reinforcements in free agency by signing Guerschon Yabusele and Jordan Clarkson.

TheArizona Diamondbacks' sell-off continued Thursday with starting pitcher Merrill Kelly being traded to theTexas Rangers,ESPN's Jeff Passan reported. Kelly, who turns 37 on Oct. 14, provides another reliable arm for the Rangers' veteran starting rotation, joining Jacob deGrom, Patrick Corbin and Nathan Eovaldi. He has been the D-backs' most consistent starter this season, compiling a 3.22 ERA over 22 starts with 121 strikeouts in 128 2/3 innings. The Rangers' starting pitchers have the best ERA in MLB at 3.16, led by deGrom (10-3, 2.55 ERA) throwing like the ace who won NL Rookie of the Year and two Cy Young Awards with the New York Mets. Corbin (3.78 ERA) has experienced a career resurgence after struggling the past five seasons with the Washington Nationals. And Eovaldi (9-3, 1.49 ERA) has been one of the best starters in baseball the past six seasons. Texas (57-52) is a postseason contender, tied with theSeattle Marinersforsecond in the AL West, five games behind theHouston Astros. The Rangers and Mariners are also tied for the AL's third wild-card playoff berth, 2.5 games ahead of theCleveland Guardiansand three ahead of theKansas City RoyalsandTampa Bay Rays. In exchange for Kelly, who can be a free agent after the season, the D-backs will receive Triple-A left-hander Kohl Drake, Double-A arm Mitch Bratt and Single-A pitcher David Hagaman. Drake, 25, was ranked as the Rangers' No. 5 prospectby MLB.com, while Bratt, 22, was No. 9 and Hagaman, 22, was No. 13. Kelly was a late bloomer as an MLB pitcher, an eighth-round pick by the Tampa Bay Rays in 2010 after he was drafted the previous two years by the Baltimore Orioles and Cleveland Guardians but didn't sign. He played nine years in the minors before making his major-league debut with the D-backs in 2019. In his seven-year MLB career, Kelly has a 3.74 ERA and 62-50 record, averaging 8.2 strikeouts and 2.7 walks per nine innings. He's two seasons removed from his best year in 2023, when he registered a 3.29 ERA and 12-8 record in 30 starts, adding 187 strikeouts in 177 2/3 innings. Carlos Correa is reuniting with the Astros after a trade from the dismantled TwinsNew Foto - Carlos Correa is reuniting with the Astros after a trade from the dismantled Twins

HOUSTON (AP) — Carlos Correa is back with the Houston Astros, reuniting one of the franchise's most iconic players with the city where he became a star. While Astros fans are more than familiar with Correa, the man behind the blockbuster trade hasn't met him yet. "I've only known him as an opponent… and I'm just dying to meet this guy," general manager Dana Brown said Thursday. "I've heard so many great things about him and I've seen his actions on the field. He brings it every day." Correa was dealt to the to the Astros from the dismantled Minnesota Twins ahead ofThursday's trade deadline, injecting a much-needed boost into their infield. "This is a big move for the team, for the city, for where we're going in the future," Brown said. "We feel like ... he's just going to bring a lot, not only as a player but as a human being — his leadership skills and the energy that he's going to bring to this club. So I'm fired up." Correa spent his first seven years in Houston, where he became one of the most beloved players in franchise history, helping the team to six playoff appearances, three American League pennants and its first World Series title in 2017 — a championship tainted by a sign-stealing scandal. The top pick in the 2012 amateur draft and 2015 AL Rookie of the Year was part of the homegrown core that helped the Astros go from the league's laughingstock to perennial contenders. The Twins got minor-league pitcher Matt Mikulski in return for Correa. They will also pay $33 million of the $103,419,355 remaining on his contract. "We feel like Correa is bringing value and with that we felt like we were going to be aggressive with it," Brown said. "And so we felt like this guy is affordable and so we went all in." The 26-year-old Mikulski, who was a second-round pick in the 2021 draft by the San Francisco Giants, was promoted earlier this season to Houston's High-A affiliate in Asheville. He has 245 strikeouts in 225 2/3 minor league innings. Also on Thursday, the Astros acquired outfielder Jesús Sánchez from the Marlins in exchange for right-hander Ryan Gusto, minor league infielder Chase Jaworsky and minor league outfielder Esmil Valencia. The left-handed Sánchez gives a boost to a lineup that has the fewest at-bats from the left side of the plate in MLB this season with slugger Yordan Alvarez out since early May with a fractured hand. Brown said they pursued pitching but that the focus was improving their slumping offense since injured starters Spencer Arrighetti, Cristian Javier and Luis García are all close to returning. "The asking prices for the arms seem to be pretty high," Brown said. "And knowing that we had some arms coming back, we stuck with the bats and these bats, we feel like are going to make a pretty good impact on our offense, help us score some runs and win some games." Correa, who waived his no-trade clause, has exclusively played shortstop in his 11-year major league career, but Brown said he'll move to third base for the AL West leaders with shortstop Jeremy Peña close to returning from the injured list. The Astros need help at third with All-Star Isaac Paredes out indefinitely with a hamstring injury. "This guy is a warrior," Brown said when asked about the position change. "He's a team-first guy and we had no doubts knowing the human being and the makeup that he would make that adjustment." Charismatic and an unquestioned leader in the clubhouse, Correa could help galvanize a team that has managed to remain atop the division standings despite dealing with multiple injuries to both its lineup and pitching staff. Correa reunites with second baseman Jose Altuve, who is the Astros' longest-tenured player and one of his closest friends on the team. When asked about the possibility of Correa returning to Houston on Wednesday, Altuve raved about him before saying: "So I think — if anything (were) to happen, I hope it's the best for him and for us." The 30-year-old Correa was named to two of his three All-Star Games while with the Astros and won a Gold Glove Award in 2021. He seemed to embrace the villain role when Houston became the league's most hated team after it was revealed the Astros illegally stole signs in their run to the 2017 title and during the 2018 season. He left when he became a free agent before the 2022 season when the Astros wouldn't pay him what he believed he was worth, signing a three-year deal worth just over $105 million. Correa opted out of that contract after one year but re-signed with the Twins on a six-year, $200 million deal. While Correa's defense at shortstop has been impeccable and his leadership in the clubhouse strong, the investment for the Twins simply hasn't panned out. He played the 2023 season through plantar fasciitis in his left foot, batting just .230 with 131 strikeouts in 135 games and a pedestrian .711 OPS. While the Twins made what was ultimately a cost-cutting move, president of baseball operations Derek Falvey said the genesis for the trade came from the Astros and not from a mandate to further slash the payroll. "Carlos was never sitting there saying anything about demanding a trade or wanting to do something else. If it was right for the Twins and it was right for him, he was open to the conversation," Falvey said. He shined in the playoffs, helping the Twins end a record 18-game postseason losing streak and win a series for the first time in 21 years, and was enjoying an All-Star season in 2024 before plantar fasciitis popped up again — this time in his right foot. He had to withdraw from the All-Star Game and didn't return until mid-September, after the Twins were already mired in a sharp swoon that pushed them out of playoff contention. Correa has been much healthier this year, but not as productive. His .905 OPS in 2024 has fallen to .704 this year, with seven home runs in 93 games. The contract he signed 2 1/2 years ago now constitutes a much larger percentage of the team's payroll. The Twins have also seen a sharp decline in regional television revenue in light of the bankruptcy of Diamond Sports Group, which prompted a spending reduction by ownership. The Pohlad family has since put the club up for sale. The Twins will pay what they owe Correa in installments due each Dec. 15: $3 million in 2025 and $10 million each in 2026, 2027 and 2028. Correa is owed $11,419,355 of his $36 million salary this year, $31.5 million next season, $30.5 million in 2027 and $30 million in 2028. Correa's contract also includes vesting options for the 2029-2032 seasons. ___ AP Sports Writer Dave Campbell and AP Baseball Writer Ronald Blum contributed to this report. ___ AP MLB:https://apnews.com/MLB

Shannon Sharpe fired by ESPN: Why he wanted network to wait after lawsuit settlementNew Foto - Shannon Sharpe fired by ESPN: Why he wanted network to wait after lawsuit settlement

Shannon Sharpe said he is "at peace" with the end of his run at ESPN, but he does have one nagging issue with how the dismissal was handled. The Hall of Fame tight end and media commentator is disappointed news ofthe network's decision to move on from himcouldn't hold until after his brother's induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame this weekend. Sharpe, who had made twice-weekly appearances on ESPN's "First Take" since 2023, revealed this onhis "Nightcap" podcast on Wednesday, July 30, and confirmed that he learned his time at ESPN was over earlier this week. Sharpe said his only request was that the network wait until Monday, Aug. 4, to release the news. His older brother, longtimeGreen Bay Packerswide receiver Sterling Sharpe, is being enshrined in Canton, Ohio as part ofthe Pro Football Hall of Fame class of 2025on Saturday. Shannon and Sterling Sharpe are set to become the first pair of brothers in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Shannon Sharpe was inducted in the class of 2011. ESPN "did what they feel they needed to do and I'm at peace with that," Shannon Sharpe said. "But I just wish guys, I just wish this thing could have waited until Monday because I hate the fact that I've overshadowed my brother. The first two brothers in the Pro Football Hall of Fame and this is what the headline is going to be for the next couple of days." ESPN has yet to publicly comment on Sharpe's status sinceThe Athleticfirst reported the network's decision to cut ties with him on Wednesday, July 30. The split between ESPN and Sharpe occurred less than two weeks after Sharpesettled a $50 million lawsuitrelated to sexual assault and battery accusations by an ex-girlfriend. .@ShannonSharperesponds to today's events@ShannonSharpe@ShayShayMedia_pic.twitter.com/H2cMBrpiDg — Nightcap (@NightcapShow_)July 31, 2025 Sharpe last appeared on ESPN in April, stepping away afterthe lawsuit was initially filed. But he publiclydenied the allegations, calling it a "shakedown," and maintained his relationship with the accuser was "100% consensual." Sharpe said at the time he planned to return to ESPN's airwaves when NFL training camps began ahead of the 2025 season. The settlement in Sharpe's case came to light on July 18 when Tony Buzbee, the attorney for the woman identified as "Jane Doe" in the court filing, announced the sides had reached a resolutionand the lawsuit would be dismissed. No details of the agreement were released. The woman accused Sharpe of sexually assaulting her twice, in October 2024 and January 2025, after previously engaging in the intentional infliction of emotional distress. She said Sharpe became violent over the course of their relationship and recorded their sexual encounters without her consent. Sharpe never faced criminal charges in the matter. Sharpe, 57, retired from the NFL in May 2004 after a 14-year career in which he won three Super Bowls and became the first tight end with more than 10,000 career receiving yards. QB Joe Burrow says this is best he's felt throwing the football in years. That's scaryNew Foto - QB Joe Burrow says this is best he's felt throwing the football in years. That's scary

CINCINNATI –Joe Burrowdidn't become "Joe Brr" by not knowing how to keep it a buck. Certainly short of soul-bearing, Burrow at least offers a glimpse into his actual self – while maintaining some level of coyness – and that's not always the case with franchise quarterbacks in 2025. So when he appears genuinely optimistic about theCincinnati Bengals'upcoming season it's hard not to drink the Kool-Aid that flows along the banks of the Ohio River. QB Joe Burrow: this group of Bengals wide receivers is deepest of my career For starters, Burrow declared Wednesday after practice he feels the best he has while throwing the football in some time. If the eye test is worth anything, Wednesday's practice backed up that claim. The man passed for 4,913 yards and 43 touchdowns and feelsbetter. Maybe it was because edge rusherTrey Hendrickson, coming off an All-Pro year, reported to camp Wednesday amid tense contract negotiations, thus ending his holdout. He didn't practice, making it a "hold-in," but the vibes were better in the building as a result, Burrow said. Back in the fold already are Burrow's top two targets, receivers Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins, both of whom received lucrative extensions this offseason. The bad news for Burrow and the Bengals' offense is that the offensive line still has question marks. A significant percentage of the team's success, however, hinges on the defense. The unit was among the league's worst in 2024 and received much of the blame for the team's 9-8 record and failure to make the playoffs. Al Golden replaces Lou Anarumo (now with the Indianapolis Colts) as defensive coordinator. Burrow has been a fan of what he's seen from the opposite side of the ball through the first week of camp, despite the installation of a new defense. The defensive backs are understanding where their help is, an example of grasping nuances within coverage schemes, Burrow said. The absence of mental errors is encouraging, he added. Burrow, by name, called out defensive tackle T.J. Slayton as somebody who "is going to be a great player for us, the energy he brings, the physicality he brings. I'm really excited to watch that on Sundays." The games and stunts to create pressures by the defensive line is something Burrow said he has gone against – and knows from experience is difficult to deal with. "And they're doing it at a high level," Burrow said. With Hendrickson back in the fold – it appears – Burrow wasn't afraid to reveal his aspirations. "I think it's got a chance to be a special year," he said. After cornerback Josh Newton picked Burrow off during 7-on-7 drills in the end zone, the defense as a unit started jawing. The smack talk from the secondary lasted all practice. "Need that energy from them," Burrow said. "Defense is built off that energy. Great defense is not always necessarily played with the mind. A lot of times it's energy, emotion, physicality." Trey Hendrickson's holdout becomes hold-in at Bengals training camp Unlike last season, Burrow wants to play in the preseason to get used to hits and speed at which the pocket disintegrates. No decisions have been made regarding his participation on Aug. 7 against the Philadelphia Eagles. The Bengals started 1-4 last season and never recovered, even with five straight wins to close out the year. Burrow has been intentional in his public statements about the need for a better start in 2025. That's another reason why Burrow has placed more value on the preseason. "We'll find out," Burrow said of the team's goal to start fast, "…I'm very positive about the energy, the morale that we have in the locker room right now." And given all that's been said about the Bengals for the past several months, maybe it's been cool – "Joe Brr" cool – all along. Super Bowl champion Mark Schlereth rails against NFL's reliance on analytics: 'Just a bunch of fluff'New Foto - Super Bowl champion Mark Schlereth rails against NFL's reliance on analytics: 'Just a bunch of fluff'

NFL teams'use of advanced metrics has been hotly debated in recent years. Three-time Super Bowl winner and FOX Sports NFL analyst Mark Schlereth weighed in on the debate. Schlereth, who played in the NFL long before analytics were introduced, expressed his distaste for the usage of metrics. "There's one thing for me. It's the analytics people. … (They) become gospel," Schlereth said during a recent appearance on OutKick's"Don't @ Me w/ Dan Dakich." Click Here For More Sports Coverage On Foxnews.com "Because you take those numbers, and you can make them say whatever you want. … And the average fan thinks that becomes gospel. They don't understand how the game works, so this is a way you can basically go, 'OK, let me put my thumbprint on this' the air yards per target or whatever bulls--- they're feeding you as an analytics number-crunching nerd." All 32 NFL teams had a designated analytics employee on their staffs last season. Read On The Fox News App ESPN anonymously surveyedeach of those staffers in 2024 to learn more about how teams used analytics. Some teams lean more into analytics than others, while some general managers' backgrounds could make them more prone to take an analytics-first approach. The survey received 22 responses. The findings named theCleveland Brownsas the No. 1 NFL franchise to incorporate analytics most frequently when it comes to making decisions on football-related matters. Browns general manager Andrew Berry holds a master's degree from Harvard in computer science. Berry works with Paul DePodesta, the Browns' chief strategy officer. Before joining the Browns, DePodesta worked in the front office of multipleMLB teamsand appeared in the film "Moneyball." Schlereth also recalled a time when he had a heated debate over the usage of analytics. "I got into an argument with a guy that was extolling the virtues of going for two points every time. …. So, I asked the guy, 'Let me ask you a question, how many two-point plays do you think we go into a given (game) with?'" Schlereth then said two plays were the standard when he played. He proceeded to explain how his teams would practice the plays and the coach's approach to implementing any of the plays in a game. "You have no idea how the game works. You have no idea what we talk about. You have no idea how we practice. You have no idea the number of plays we have in or how we run those plays or what we're trying to exploit." Schlereth described analytics as "fluff." "The analytics don't mean anything in football. It's just a bunch of fluff to make us feel important, like we as 'analytics analysts' really know what we're talking about." Yahoo Sports' Frank Schwab has spent the NFL offseason putting together a magnum opus, ranking and previewing every teamto get you ready for the 2025 season. Below, we break down his power rankings division-by-division. NFC East:The defending champions, appropriately, will start the season atop our rankings. And while there's a chance the Commanders could contend for the division in Year 2 of the Jayden Daniels era, Washington fans should prepare for some regression after last year's whirlwind campaign. Eagles(No. 1 in Frank's rankings) Commanders(10) Cowboys(18) Giants(27) North:Last year, they werethe most dominant division in NFL history. This year, if the 5-win Bears take a step forward behind new head coach Ben Johnson, they could be even better. Lions(3) Vikings(6) Packers(7) Bears(15) South:Tampa Bay's active five-year playoff streak is the longest in the NFC, and the preseason outlook suggests they have a good chance of extending that to six. Buccaneers(8) Falcons(21) Panthers(29) Saints(31) West:Just four wins separated first and last place last year, and based on these rankings it could be just as close this fall. The biggest question is whether the perennial contenders in San Francisco can bounce back after a season in which everything that could go wrong, did. Rams(12) 49ers(13) Seahawks(17) Cardinals(19) AFC East:It's Super Bowl or bust for the Bills, who should have no trouble winning a weak division but still must find a way to get past the Chiefs. Four of their last five seasons have ended with a playoff loss to Kansas City. Bills(5) Dolphins(23) Patriots(25) Jets(28) North:Speaking of Super Bowl or bust, Baltimore is still looking for its first trip to the Big Game with Lamar Jackson under center. Cincinnati, meanwhile, hopes to rebound after somehow missing the playoffs despite all-time great seasons from Joe Burrow and Ja'Marr Chase. Ravens(2) Bengals(14) Steelers(20) Browns(30) South:Congratulations to Houston, which might run away with this division by default, particularly if C.J. Stroud bounces back from his sophomore slump. It will be fascinating to watch Travis Hunter attempt to be a two-way player in Jacksonville, though. Texans(16) Jaguars(22) Colts(24) Titans(32) West:The last time we saw the Chiefs, they were getting their doors blown off in the Super Bowl. But let's not forget that was theirfifth Super Bowl appearance in six yearsand Patrick Mahomes hasn't even turned 30 yet. The AFC still very much runs through Kansas City. Chiefs(4) Chargers(9) Broncos(11) Raiders(26) Countdown: The NFL preseason kicks off tonight with the annual Hall of Fame game, and the regular season begins in 35 days, with the Eagles hosting the Cowboys on Thursday, Sept. 4. Bloomberg columnist Conor Senposed the following questionin the wake of Ryne Sandberg's passing this week, and I can't stop thinking about it: "Between WGN, ESPN, the raw number of baseball games that are played, and the timing of Sandberg's career, is he the most-watched athlete on TV in American history?" Superstation stars:There are certainly more famous American athletes than "Ryno," but does anyone have more cumulative TV exposure? The Chicago legend has a strong case, as do other players who starred for the Cubs and Braves during theSuperstation Era(1980s-1990s), when their games were broadcast nationally on WGN (Cubs) and TBS (Braves). So who is it?Who's the most-watched athlete on TV in American history? The superstation stars are hard to beat, but what about Tom Brady, who played in 10 Super Bowls? Or Derek Jeter, who played in seven World Series? Or Michael Jordan, who enjoyed a level of fame in the 90s that's hard to fathom in today's fractured media environment? Or Michael Phelps, who had America's undivided attention for five straight Olympics? My top 10 candidates, in no particular order: ⚾️ Ryne Sandberg ⚾️ Chipper Jones ⚾️ Dale Murphy ⚾️ Derek Jeter 🏀 Michael Jordan 🏀 Kobe Bryant 🏀 LeBron James 🏈 Tom Brady 🥇 Michael Phelps ⛳️ Tiger Woods Who gets your vote? Who am I missing? Shoot me an email with your thoughts:kendall.baker@yahooinc.com. I'll share the best responses tomorrow and hopefully arrive at a definitive answer to this question. It's a fun one! Never before in MLB's150-year historyhas a batting champion in either league finished the season with an average under .300. Could that change this year? Where it stands:Plenty of AL playersare over the threshold, but just one NL player — Dodgers catcher Will Smith — is hitting comfortably above .300 at the moment (.325). The problem, though, is that he's right on the edge of not having enough plate appearances to qualify. In order to qualify for the batting title, you must accumulate at least 3.1 plate appearances per team game, which comes to 502 across a full season. Smith is at 3.12 right now, and as a catcher who doesn't play every day he could easily fall below the requisite 502. Behind Smith are a host of players straddling .300, led by Padres 3B Manny Machado (.302), Marlins OF Kyle Stowers (.298) and Dodgers 1B Freddie Freeman (.297). If Smith doesn't qualify, and no one else tops .300 on the final day of the season, voilà. What to watch:Smith could still claim the title even if he doesn't qualify, thanks to an interesting wrinkle in how final calculations are made. If he ends the season under 502 PAs, the balance will be made up with hitless at-bats (i.e. if he's 10 PA shy, 10 hitless at-bats would be added to his total). If he still leads the league after that, the batting title is his. Baltimore —There are "Web Gems," and then there's what Orioles centerfielder Cedric Mullins has done in the last five days, robbing the Blue Jays of home runs onWednesdayandMondayafter taking away extra bases withthis absurd diving grabover the weekend. Is this farewell? The 30-year-old outfielder, who's been an Oriole since they selected him in the 13th round of the 2015 draft, is a popular trade candidate ahead of tonight's deadline. If this is farewell, he certainly gave fans in Baltimore quite a week to remember him by. Minneapolis —MVP frontrunner Napheesa Collier (30 points, 9 rebounds, 3 blocks) and the Lynx held on latefor a 100-93 win over the Libertyin a rematch of last year's WNBA Finals. Different directions: While first-place Minnesota (23-5) improved to a perfect 5-0 after a loss, the defending champion Liberty (17-9) lost their third straight game and learned that Breanna Stewart will be sidelined indefinitely with a bone bruise in her knee. Singapore —French superstar Léon Marchand, who won five medals (including four golds) at last summer's Olympics, shattered Ryan Lochte's world recordin the 200m individual medley (1:52.69) in Wednesday's world championship semifinal. More history: Luca Urlandotook gold in the 200m butterfly, becoming the first American man to medal in the event at worlds since Michael Phelps in 2011, and Jack Alexy set an American record in his100m freestyle semifinal(46.81). The NFL preseason officially kicks off tonight in Canton, Ohio, where the Chargers and Lions will square off in the annualHall of Fame Gameahead of Saturday's Class of 2025 enshrinement. The LPGA's fifth and final major of the year teed off at Royal Porthcawl in Wales while you were sleeping. All eyes are on21-year-old phenom Lottie Woad, who is the betting favorite to win in just her second week as a professional. More to watch: ⛳️PGA:Wyndham Championship(7am, ESPN+; 3pm, Golf)…Playoff spots are on the linein the final event of the regular season. ⚾️MLB:Braves at Reds(7pm, MLB); Rangers at Mariners(10pm, MLB) …Eugenio Suárez is back with his former team after being traded to Seattle on Wednesday. 🏀WNBA:Valkyries at Mystics(7:30pm, Prime)… As it stands, Washington is thelast team in the playoffsand Golden State is the first team out. 🏊‍♀️Swimming:World Championships(7am, Peacock)… Katie Ledecky goes for another medal in the women's 4x200m free relay(8:44am). Steer's 2-run triple in 8th helps Reds beat Dodgers 5-2 after Ohtani's outing cut shortNew Foto - Steer's 2-run triple in 8th helps Reds beat Dodgers 5-2 after Ohtani's outing cut short

CINCINNATI (AP) — Spencer Steer hit a two-run triple in the eighth inning and the Cincinnati Reds defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-2 on Wednesday night after Shohei Ohtani's pitching outing was cut short. Ohtanileft the mound accompanied by a trainerduring the fourth inning with no outs and a 2-0 count against Spencer Steer. The Dodgers' two-way superstar threw six straight balls, including two consecutive wild pitches. Ohtani was making his seventh mound start in his comeback from Tommy John surgery on his right elbow, which occurred after the 2023 season. The Dodgers' plan for Wednesday was for Ohtani to throw four innings. He threw 51 pitches, including 32 for strikes. He remained in the game as the designated hitter and was 0 for 5. After Austin Hays and Tyler Stephenson walked in the eighth against Emmet Sheehan (0-3), Steer drove a ball to deep center on the 11th pitch of his at-bat. James Outman, who had just entered to play center field, nearly made a leaping catch at the wall, but the ball popped out of his glove, and Hays and Stephenson scored. Will Benson singled to drive in Steer, his second RBI of the night. Scott Barlow (4-0) got the final two outs in the eighth and Tony Santillan worked the ninth for his third save. Freddie Freeman had a two-run homer for Los Angeles in the fourth inning. Key moment Sheehan looked like he was going to get out of the inning earlier in Steer's at-bat, but left fielder Andy Pages dropped a fly ball in foul territory after trying to make a jumping catch. Key stat The Reds have not been swept in any of their 35 series this season. That is the longest run in club history, surpassing the 1970 NL championship team's 32-series streak. Cincinnati is the only team not to have been swept this season. Up next Dodgers: LHP Clayton Kershaw (4-2, 3.62 ERA) gets the start in Friday's series opener at Tampa Bay. Reds: LHP Andrew Abbott (8-1, 2.09 ERA) pitches Thursday against visiting Atlanta. ___ AP MLB:https://apnews.com/hub/mlb

Yankees survive extra innings after 'unforgivable' gaffe by C Austin WellsNew Foto - Yankees survive extra innings after 'unforgivable' gaffe by C Austin Wells

The New York Yankees won Wednesday, but it was not because of Austin Wells' baserunning. The team went into extra innings against the Tampa Bay Rays after a gaffe by the young catcher gifted the Rays the final out of the ninth inning. With the game tied 3-3, Wells hit a one-out single to put the winning run on base. The next batter, Trent Grisham, either tried to sacrifice Wells into scoring position or catch the Tampa Bay defense napping. The result was Grisham getting thrown out at first ... and then Wells getting caught in a rundown between first and second. [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] Replay showed that Wells actually reached second but clearly thought the inning was over when Grisham was called out. As a result, he began walking back to the Yankees' dugout on the first-base line, with the surprised Rays easily tagging him out. Yankees broadcaster Michael Kay called the mistake "unforgivable." It can't happen," Yankees manager Aaron Boonesaid after the game. It has been a slow season overall for Wells, who finished third in AL Rookie of the Year voting last season but is hitting .212/.272/.427 with 15 homers in 87 games this year. After a mortifying end to the 2024 World Series, the Yankees have built up a reputation for errors on defense and the basepaths. That's how the Los Angeles Dodgers described them, and it's how many of their own fans see them (even if advanced stats point to the Yankees actually being decent on defense this season). Aside from the Wells mistake, the Yankees committed two more errors on defense Wednesday, one of them shortstop Anthony Volpe's MLB-worst 16th error of the season. Volpe at least made up for it witha game-tying homer in the ninth inning, right before Wells came to bat. Fortunately for the Yankees, all those mistakes became moot when recent trade acquisition Ryan McMahon walked it off in the 11th inning and gave the Yankeesa 5-4 victory. He's training for the biggest race of his life – but his family is trapped in starving GazaNew Foto - He's training for the biggest race of his life – but his family is trapped in starving Gaza

Palestinian para-cyclistAlaa al-Dalihas long dreamed about representing his people on an international stage. Following months of grueling training, al-Dali – an amputee with one leg – is putting everything he has into training for the Para-Cycling World Championships in August, after he and teammate Mohamed Asfour competed at the Para-Cycling World Cup in May, with al-Dali becoming the first Palestinian to finish in the top 20, booking a ticket for the pair to the prestigious World Championships in late August. But keeping his mind on training is challenging most days, and near impossible on some, as his thoughts go towards the war in Gaza, where distressing images of skeletal children are pouring out of the area, causinginternational outrageover starvation and mounting concern over restrictions on food and aid ordered by Israel. "My family is in Gaza. My children are in Gaza. There is famine now. There's a genocide happening. We are going through a very difficult time now," al-Dali told CNN Sports. "Our people in Gaza, they are under bombardment, under threat of being killed all the time," he said, explaining that he has lost over 30 friends and family to the war, with scores more injured. Meanwhile, his wife and two children are trapped in Gaza as health officials report more deaths from malnutrition and amongpeople desperately trying to get aidfrom convoys and distribution sites. "My children are starving, and all I can do is look at them on a screen," al-Dali said. More than 60,000 people have died and over 146,000 have been injured in Gaza from Israeli strikes and military action after more than 21 months of fighting, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health, which does not differentiate between civilians and militants. The 28-year-old al-Dali's path to the cycling spotlight has been marred by injury and tragedy. In 2018, having qualified to be part of the Palestinian cycling team at the Asian Games later that year, he was shot during the first of theGreat March of Returnprotests on March 30, and ultimately, had to have his leg amputated. Al-Dali is just one of 35,000 protestors who sustained injuries during the 2018 Great March of Return, according to research fromThe Institute for Palestine Studies, an independent nonprofit research and publication center, which notes that this was "due to the deliberate targeting of protesters' limbs by Israeli snipers." The Great March of Return demonstrations were protests to "demand the end of the Israeli blockade and the right of return for refugees,"according tothe United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). One in five of those injured – over 8,000 people – were hit by live ammunition, accordingto the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, and 156 people had to have limb amputations as a result. At the time, the Israeli military said its snipers fired at the feet or legs of those who tried to penetrate into Israel, which they said followed international law. Looking back on that fateful day in 2018, al-Dali told CNN that losing his leg almost killed his dreams of being an athlete once and for all. "I felt that I lost hope, as if I had lost my life and lost everything. And the amputation was a very big matter for me. I would not be able to complete and I was deprived of participating in Jakarta," he said. But in spite of this, al-Dali pushed on. Determined to fulfill his childhood dream to represent his people in cycling, he slowly started learning how to ride a bike with one leg. In 2020, he founded the Gaza Sunbirds, a para cycling team that also distributes aid to those in need in the form of food parcels, hot meals, shelter, and a universal basic income scheme for athletes with disabilities. To date, the Sunbirds have distributed more than over $400,000 worth of aid, accordingto their website. "We are not only delivering aid to people, but we are also giving them a glimmer of hope in this life," he told CNN Sports. "The support that we are providing to our people is a small part compared to the suffering they are living through. "The bike is not just a tool that I ride, to finish a race, or ride it for training. The bike for me is a big part of my life. It has become a part of my soul, and my soul is the bike," al-Dali added. "Despite this situation, and despite everything, we gathered ourselves as a team. We started training and going out to ride our bikes, short rides. But we were under bombardment, the danger of death, and threats at that time. "We even used bikes there as a means of transportation because transportation had almost stopped in Gaza." Members of the Sunbirds team are sounding the alarm about the desperate situation inside Gaza, with Karim Ali, the London-based co-founder of the Gaza Sunbirds, describing amputee athletes and staff as "starving to death as they fight to continue delivering aid in the strip." "In what world is it acceptable that aid workers – who are supposed to be the ones feeding the starving – are deteriorating themselves and barely have enough sustenance to support themselves? How can a dying population be relying on people who haven't eaten for days at a time and struggle to get out of bed?" he told CNN Sports. "We all have responsibility to put on the pressure and say enough to this forced mass starvation and enough to this genocide," Ali added. Israel has vehemently denied any accusations that it is committing genocide and has consistently argued that it is acting in accordance with international law and that its war in Gaza following the deadly Hamas attacks on October 7, 2023 is one of self-defense. Al-Dali now lives in Belgium, where he is seeking asylum, after he and a delegation were evacuated from Gaza last year in order to compete in races in Europe and Kazakhstan. Alongside a small team of athletes, coaches and support staff, al-Dali was evacuated into Egypt and got short-stay visas to race in the World Cup in Belgium. After traveling the world and competing in eight races, al-Dali returned to Belgium on his own to claimed asylum while the assault on Gaza rages on. He continues to wait for his asylum to be approved in Belgium. "An athlete should be psychologically in comfort. They need to be able to sleep well. They need to be able to rest well. Psychological relief is essential for the sport," he explained. "We are trying to be champions, but we are not champions because we are going through very difficult times. "I get worried. I get scared constantly. I have nightmares about the safety of my family. I'm always worried about losing someone new," he said. That fear is not unfounded. On May 19, al-Dali's cousin and fellow Sunbird Ahmed al-Dali waskilled in a missile strikeon Gaza. Ahmed, he explained, was a father to three daughters and had recently welcomed a son. Ahmed was also an amputee, having lost his leg in 2014. Al-Dali told CNN Sports that his cousin was passionate about cycling and loved fixing bicycles. "He was a great human being, very optimistic, always laughing, and making us laugh," al-Dali said. "His leg was amputated, but he continued his life. He challenged everything in his life, and he continued his future." He said that his late cousin's bravery was one of the things that made him so admirable. "Even when Ahmed was killed, he was going to save other people," al-Dali recounted, explaining that his cousin was trying to help people injured by an airstrike, when a second attack came and ultimately claimed his life. "So you can imagine how great of a person he is, while trying to save people's lives, only having one leg. He is a figure for me, and his memory should live on," al-Dali said. "I will try to deliver Ahmed's message. I will raise his voice with God's word in the international events, as much as I can, and also we will as a team." Al-Dali will next cycle at the World Championships in Belgium in August, alongside teammate Mohamed Asfour. "We exemplify that people with disabilities do continue their lives and they will also be able to continue with their lives." This story has been updated with additional information. Antonio Gates career stats: Chargers legend to be enshrined in Pro Football Hall of FameNew Foto - Antonio Gates career stats: Chargers legend to be enshrined in Pro Football Hall of Fame

FormerLos Angeles Chargerstight end Antonio Gates hasalready been votedinto the Pro FootballHall of Fame. All he's waiting for now is his official enshrinement this weekend. Throughout a 16-year career, one entirely spent with the Chargers, Gates was one of the most successful tight ends in history. His 116 receiving touchdowns still stand as a record for the position, seven years after his retirement, and he ranks among the top tight ends in just about every other career statistic. Gates earned the Hall of Fame nod in his second year on the ballot after he was asurprise snubfrom last year's class. NFL PRESEASON:When is the NFL Hall of Fame game in 2025? Date, time This year, he'll be one of four members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame's Class of 2025, joining Eric Allen, Jared Allen and Sterling Sharpe. The four inductees this year mark the fewest in a Pro Football Hall of Fame class since 2005. Ahead of Saturday's Hall of Fame enshrinement ceremony, USA TODAY Sports takes a look at Gates' career numbers and where he stacks up among all-time tight end greats. Gates played his entire 16-year career in San Diego and Los Angeles with the Chargers. He retired as the team's all-time leader in receiving yards; a franchise record he still holds. Here are Gates' stats from his Hall of Fame career: Games:236 (190 starts) Targets:1,459 Receptions:955 Receiving yards:11,841 Yards per reception:12.4 Touchdowns:116 Gates' stats don't paint the whole picture. The former Charger also made eight consecutive Pro Bowls from 2004 to 2011, and he was a three-time, first-team All-Pro from 2004 to 2006. Fantasy football RB rankings: Bijan Robinson or Saquon Barkley at No. 1?New Foto - Fantasy football RB rankings: Bijan Robinson or Saquon Barkley at No. 1?

The end of July means preseason football is just around the corner for teams across theNFL. For some, it's already here: the Hall of Fame game July 31 pits theLos Angeles ChargersagainstDetroit Lionsto open football for the 2025 season. That means we're getting closer tofantasy footballdraft season for millions of managers deciding how best to fill out their rosters, including at running back. As in 2023, last year's top fantasy running back,Saquon Barkley, earned Offensive Player of the Year honors in real life while winning plenty of fantasy football leagues for managers across the country. He also will befeatured on the cover of Madden, following fully inChristian McCaffrey's footsteps a year prior. This year could be an intriguing one for the running back position. One of the most talented draft classes in years gave dozens of teams viable rookie starters or rotational players. Returning stars like Barkley and McCaffrey face some question marks in the wake of their standout seasons. That's a lot to sort through for fantasy managers but don't worry, USA TODAY Sports has you covered with the top 50 running backs in fantasy football this season. 2025 POSITION RANKINGS:QB| RB |WR|TE| K | D/ST 1.Bijan Robinson,Atlanta Falcons. The Falcons were one of the best rushing offenses in the league last season. They lost starting center Drew Dalman in free agency but the offense as a whole could take a step forward in year two with QB Michael Penix. Robinson improved in 2024 without racking up too much mileage. He's one of the most talented running backs in the league. Don't overthink it. 2.Saquon Barkley,Philadelphia Eagles. Barkley had an outstanding 2024 season but history is not on his side to replicate that success. He had 378 total touches in the regular season; each of the nine running backs to hit more than 370 in the last decade saw a significant drop-off in production the following year. He's still this high thanks to one of the best offensive lines in the league. 3.Ashton Jeanty,Las Vegas Raiders. This absolutely could be too high for a rookie running back, especially one running behind an offensive line with some question marks. But the Raiders offense is an anomaly. The only weapon ahead of Jeanty in the pecking order is tight end Brock Bowers. Las Vegas offensive coordinator Chip Kelly has evolved as an offensive play-caller and Jeanty should benefit with his generational traits. 4.Jahmyr Gibbs,Detroit Lions. What the Lions offense will be without longtime coordinator Ben Johnson is one of the biggest questions across the NFL in 2025. Gibbs is a game-breaking weapon for new coordinator John Morton, who schemed the 2017 Jets into a top-20 rushing attack led by Bilal Powell and a 32-year-old Matt Forte in his last coordinator job. Detroit continued its investment in the offensive line in the draft and that should give fantasy owners confidence despite the changes. 5.Derrick Henry,Baltimore Ravens. He can't keep doing this forever but we won't be the ones too early on King Henry's drop-off. He had 2,114 yards from scrimmage in his first season in Baltimore. Even with the threat of Lamar Jackson and the return of the speedy Keaton Mitchell, Henry is the No. 1 ball-carrier for one of the best rushing offenses in the league. 6.Josh Jacobs,Green Bay Packers. Jacobs was RB5 in standard scoring last season and Green Bay invested in the offensive line even more in free agency and the draft. A healthy Jordan Love in 2025 could impact Jacobs' share of the offensive load but not enough to negatively affect his overall production. 7.De'Von Achane,Miami Dolphins. Achane was a top-10 RB in 2024 and especially valuable in PPR leagues with a career-high 78 catches for 592 yards and six touchdowns. Raheem Mostert is now in Las Vegas and that should give Achane more of the rushing load even as Jaylen Wright takes on a bigger role. 8.James Cook,Buffalo Bills. Cook is still participating in training camp even as he looks for a contract extension. He was a touchdown machine in 2024 but had just 1,267 yards from scrimmage, the lowest total among the top 10 fantasy running backs. He should still be a top-10 fantasy back this season thanks to a top-tier offense, even if his touchdown total regresses. 9.Bucky Irving,Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Irving was one of the biggest surprises in the NFL last season thanks to his breakout year in which he was remarkably efficient on a per-touch basis. His ceiling may be capped by Rachaad White's presence in the passing game, a top-tier wide receiving corps and a new play-caller but he's still running behind a top-tier offensive line. He's got one of the highest floors in the league entering year two. 10.Christian McCaffrey,San Francisco 49ers. McCaffrey may be the toughest running back to project for 2025. He looks to be fully healthy after a tumultuous 2024 season that saw him fail to find the end zone for the first time in his career. The 49ers drafted Jordan James in Round 5 this year and Isaac Guerendo could take on a bigger role in Year 2. San Francisco is facing uncertainty in the receiving corps so McCaffrey could be relied upon early in the season to shoulder the load. FANTASY DRAFT STRATEGY:Drafting from No. 1 pick in 10-team full PPR 11.Jonathan Taylor,Indianapolis Colts. Taylor may have won (or lost) many fantasy football championships in 2024 thanks to his string of top-five performances from Weeks 16-18. Indianapolis has question marks at quarterback as well as interior offensive line and Taylor hasn't played a full season since 2021. That's a lot of concern but he's still one of the top runners in the NFL when healthy. 12.Chuba Hubbard,Carolina Panthers. Hubbard hit 1,000 yards and 10 touchdowns for the first time in his career last season. Things could be even better in 2025 thanks to the Panthers' passing offense potentially taking a step forward with wideout Tetairoa McMillan's arrival. He should keep defenses from focusing on stopping the run when lining up against Carolina's offense. 13.Omarion Hampton,Los Angeles Chargers.Behind Jeanty, Hampton was in his own tier of running back prospects in the 2025 NFL draft. He's in a perfect spot to be a contributor early on. Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh wants to win by running the ball effectively. Hampton should enjoy running behind two of the top young tackles in the league and will have plenty of opportunity to showcase his skills as a receiver. 14.Kenneth Walker III,Seattle Seahawks. Seattle has a new coordinator with Klint Kubiak and that should lead to running the ball much more effectively than in 2024. The game plan will likely feature a lot of outside zone, which plays into Walker's skillset. Zach Charbonnet may vulture some carries, but all signs point to Walker enjoying his best season in Seattle to date, pending health. 15.Chase Brown,Cincinnati Bengals. Brown was a top-six fantasy RB in all scoring formats from Week 9 on in 2025. Cincinnati should have better play at both guard spots on the offensive line and feature the best wide receiver duo in the league. Rookie Tahj Brooks is a powerful runner and could work into a role sooner than later, but that should alleviate injury concerns for Brown without eating into his production too much. 16.Kyren Williams,Los Angeles Rams. Williams had more carries (316) than all but two running backs in the NFL (Henry and Barkley) last season but finished as RB6 or RB7, depending on the format. Williams is looking for an extension and the Rams added Jarquez Hunter in the draft. The volume should be there but he may not make the most of it. 17.Breece Hall,New York Jets. Hall entered last season viewed as one of the top RBs in fantasy and ended the year outside of the top 15 in all formats. He's in great position to have a better year in 2025 with a new offensive coordinator in Tanner Engstrand, a bolstered offensive line and a dual-threat quarterback in Justin Fields. 18.Aaron Jones Sr.,Minnesota Vikings. Jones was a top-20 running back in 2024 despite reaching the end zone just seven times. Minnesota overhauled the interior of its offensive line and that shows an intent to run the ball more and more effectively. With first-year starter J.J. McCarthy taking over at quarterback, Jones' ceiling is much higher than a year ago, even with Jordan Mason now in town. 19.Alvin Kamara,New Orleans Saints. New Orleans is welcoming a new offensive play-caller in head coach Kellen Moore, upgrades on the offensive line and lots of questions at quarterback. Kamara's well past his prime as a top-10 fantasy RB but should have a high floor in what could be a run-first offense. 20.James Conner,Arizona Cardinals. Conner was a fringe top-10 running back last season in one of the most diverse running schemes in the league. Cardinals running game coordinator Klayton Adams is now the offensive coordinator in Dallas, which could affect Conner and the offense as he reaches his age-30 season. 21.Kaleb Johnson,Pittsburgh Steelers. Johnson is another rookie running back in a good situation. Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith will welcome his skillset and there's a chance the Steelers offensive line can become one of the best in the league. 22.TreVeyon Henderson,New England Patriots. Henderson is New England's most dynamic playmaker on offense entering 2025. Rhamondre Stevenson may be ahead of him on the depth chart, but it'd be a surprise if offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels limits his touches as a rookie. 23.D'Andre Swift,Chicago Bears. New Bears head coach and offensive play-caller Ben Johnson schemed up one of the top offenses in the league in Detroit based on a potent running game. Swift could benefit from the new hire and upgrades on the offensive line. 24.RJ Harvey,Denver Broncos. Denver signed veteran J.K. Dobbins, but the dynamic rookie Harvey should be a threat as a runner and receiver. Even with Dobbins and Audric Estime in the building, Harvey will have a big role. 25.Tyrone Tracy Jr.,New York Giants. Tracy had a strong rookie season last year and could improve in Year 2, especially in half- and full-PPR leagues thanks to his background as a receiver. New York has a tough schedule in 2025, three potential starting quarterbacks and added to the running back room in free agency and the draft. That makes Tracy a risky pick. 26.Joe Mixon,Houston Texans. Mixon will miss significant time with a foot injury and that's a tough outlook entering the 2025 season under a new offensive coordinator. He's going into his age-29 season behind an offensive line with plenty of question marks. 27.David Montgomery,Detroit Lions. Only seven RBs had more rushing touchdowns than Montgomery last season, but he barely cracked 1,000 yards from scrimmage. If that scoring total takes a dip with a change in coordinator and a larger role for Gibbs, that could knock Montgomery down from low-end RB2 status. 28.Isiah Pacheco,Kansas City Chiefs. Pacheco struggled in 2024 following a fractured fibula early in the season. He'll be contending for touches with free agent addition Elijah Mitchell and rookie Brashard Smith but should still be the lead back. That gives him a high floor entering 2025. 29.TonyPollard,Tennessee Titans. Tennessee upgraded everything around the running back position this offseason and Pollard should benefit. There will be multiple new starters on the offensive line, an upgraded receiving corps and a No. 1 pick at quarterback. That's much improved from his RB21 circumstances a year ago. 30.Brian Robinson Jr.,Washington Commanders. Washington upgraded its offensive line and should take a step under second-year coordinator Kliff Kingsbury and quarterback Jayden Daniels. But Robinson isn't much of a threat as a receiver, especially with Austin Ekeler still on the roster, which keeps his ceiling low despite a high floor. 31.Zach Charbonnet, Seattle Seahawks. Walker will be the lead back in Seattle but hasn't played a full season since entering the league in 2022. That makes Charbonnet one of the top handcuff options in fantasy this year with RB3 potential in an offense lacking playmakers outside of Walker and Jaxon Smith-Njigba. 32.Jaylen Warren, Pittsburgh Steelers. The Steelers opted to re-sign Warren this offseason and he should benefit from the improved offensive line. Johnson may shoulder a lot of the rushing load, but Warren could be a sleeper in PPR leagues as Pittsburgh's pass-catching group lacks much beyond D.K. Metcalf. 33.Javonte Williams,Dallas Cowboys:Williams is one of two free agent additions alongside Miles Sanders in a new-look Cowboys backfield. New offensive coordinator Klayton Adams helped design a creative running scheme in Arizona. That could benefit Williams and the other runners in Dallas. 34.Jordan Mason, Minnesota Vikings. Mason moved from San Francisco to Minnesota this offseason and his outlook significantly improved. Aaron Jones is entering his age-31 season and the Vikings should run the ball enough to make Mason an attractive handcuff with RB3 potential. 35.Travis Etienne Jr.,Jacksonville Jaguars. New Jaguars coach Liam Coen maximized a backfield with Rachaad White, Bucky Irving and Sean Tucker in Tampa Bay last year. It's unclear early how the touches will be divvied up in Jacksonville with Etienne competing with Tank Bigsby and rookie Bhayshul Tuten. 36.Rhamondre Stevenson, New England Patriots. Stevenson is the lead returning ball-carrier in New England but Henderson's dynamic potential could eat into his opportunities. The Patriots offensive line shouldn't be nearly as bad as a year ago, giving some potential for Stevenson as a low-end RB3. 37.Nick Chubb, Houston Texans. With Mixon facing an injury in training camp, Chubb could be a surprise contributor early on in 2025. Houston has a first-year offensive coordinator and a new-look offensive line but the carries could be there for Chubb as Mixon works his way back to health. 38.Dylan Sampson,Cleveland Browns. Cleveland's offense is full of question marks at quarterback and running back. Second-round pick Quinshon Judkins remains unsigned behind incumbent Jerome Ford. Sampson's abilities in the receiving game give him the edge over Ford here. 39.J.K. Dobbins, Denver Broncos. Dobbins was an early-season fantasy darling last year before injury cut into his production. He and rookie RJ Harvey figure to share carries but Harvery should be the more explosive option, lowering Dobbins' ceiling. 40.Rachaad White, Tampa Bay Buccaneers. White will be playing under his third offensive coordinator in the last three seasons. New coordinator Josh Grizzard was the passing game coordinator last year, which could see White's value as a receiver continue ... but Irving could eat even more into his share of the carries out of the backfield. 41.Tyler Allgeier,Atlanta Falcons. Allgeier is one of the top handcuffs this season and has the track record to produce should Robinson miss time with injury. There may not be enough carries to go around if Robinson is in the lineup, though, capping Allgeier's ceiling. 42.Najee Harris, Los Angeles Chargers. Harris is recovering from an eye injury and that could knock his already low fantasy outlook this season. But given how much the Chargers will likely want to run the ball, he should get steady carries behind Hampton in 2025. Just not enough to move him out of RB4 territory. 43.Cam Skattebo, New York Giants. Skattebo will pair with Tracy in the Giants backfield, but things are bleak given the schedule, quarterback situation and offensive line. He showed off his skills as a receiver in college, which improves his outlook. 44.Jaydon Blue, Dallas Cowboys. While Williams and Sanders may start the year with the most touches, look for Blue to get a bigger role as the season wears on. He's a proven receiver out of the backfield with dynamic ability in open space. In an offense lacking playmakers, watch out for him to improve as the season moves along. 45.Tank Bigsby,Jacksonville Jaguars. Bigsby could see a bigger role with Coen now in Jacksonville, but his lack of receiving chops means he'll likely be pigeonholed in a crowded backfield. His best outlook is to take over as the early-down runner from Etienne and churn out yards behind an improved offensive line. 46.Isaac Guerendo, San Francisco 49ers. Guerendo played well in a couple of starts as a rookie. McCaffrey is back and healthy in 2025 but Guerendo could be a top handcuff with rookie Jordan James offering potential as an early-down running back. 47.Tyjae Spears, Tennessee Titans. Spears should benefit from the Titans' improved offense, though not as much as Pollard. He struggled with injury last season but looks set for a bigger role as the primary pass-catching back in Tennessee's offense. 48.Roschon Johnson, Chicago Bears. New coach Ben Johnson used two running backs very effectively during his time in Detroit. That bumps Johnson's potential in 2025 to have a role akin to David Montgomery in recent years. That makes him a worthwhile late-round flyer. 49.Brashard Smith, Kansas City Chiefs. Pacheco is the hard-nosed runner leading the way in Kansas City but Smith could be the dynamic receiving option out of the backfield. His background as a receiver should give him a role similar to what Jerick McKinnon had in years past. 50.Trey Benson, Arizona Cardinals. Benson could see a bigger role in his sophomore season in Arizona as Conner gets one year older with a history of missing games with injury. He's a worthwhile handcuff with potential for a larger share of carries in 2025. This article originally appeared on USA TODAY:Fantasy football RB rankings: Bijan Robinson, Saquon Barkley top list

SINGAPORE (AP) — Léon Marchand of France is out to break his own world record in Thursday's 200-meter individual medley at the swimming world championships in Singapore. If you missed it,Marchand only set the recordon Wednesday in the semifinals at the worlds — 1 minute, 52.69 seconds. That shattered the old mark of 1:54.00 held by American Ryan Lochte since 2011. Of course, Marchand's victory is almost assured. The only question is by how much. A four-time gold medalist a year ago in the Paris Olympics, Marchand will share the stage on Day 5 withCanada's Summer McIntosh. McIntosh will go for her third medal in Singapore, this time in the 200 freestyle. Elizabeth Dekkers of Australia and American Regan Smith are the main rivals. She has already won gold in the 200 IM and 400 freestyle. McIntosh is bidding for five individual gold medals in Singapore after winning three individual Olympic gold medals in Paris. Yu Zidi, the 12-year-old Chinese swimmer, is the eighth-fastest qualifier in the field as she tries to reach the podium. She was fourth in the 200 IM. Three other finals are on the day's program and the Americans have shots. The United States has won only three gold medals in Singapore with the teambattling a stomach bugpicked up in training camp in Thailand. Head coach Greg Meehan has suggested team health is improving. In the men's 100 freestyle, American Jack Alexy and Romanian David Popovici were the quickest qualifiers. Popovici has already won the 200 free in Singapore. He was the gold medalist at 200 in Paris, and took bronze in the 100. American Regan Smith has the quickest time in the 50 backstroke followed very closely by Lauren Cox of Britain, American Katharine Berkoff, and Wan Letian of China. The last final of the day is the women's 4x200-meter freestyle relay. __ AP sports:https://apnews.com/hub/sports
