World No. 33 Yulia Putintseva asked the umpire to eject a spectator from her first-round match atWimbledonover safety concerns, calling the attendee "dangerous" and "crazy." Putintseva went on to lose 6-0, 6-0 to the USA's Amanda Anisimova in just 43 minutes and was visibly emotional while sitting down ahead of the final game. Trailing 0-3 in the first set on court 15, Putintseva reported the fan to the umpire at the change of ends. "Can you take him out? I'm not going to continue playing until he leaves," she was heard telling the umpire on the BBC broadcast. "These people are dangerous, they're crazy." After being asked by the umpire which fan it was, Putintseva gestured to the stand behind where she was serving and said it was a spectator wearing green. The umpire then said he would phone security before getting down from his chair to speak to two members of security staff who were courtside. "Maybe he has a knife and he will attack after, I don't know," Putintseva, who didn't speak to the media after the match, said. In a statement to TNT Sports, the organizers said: "Following a complaint about the behaviour of a spectator at the match on court 15, the chair umpire informed security and the matter was dealt with." CNN Sportshas reached out to the All England Lawn Tennis Club for comment. The incident comes after a man was ejected from the Dubai Tennis Championships after displaying "fixated behavior" towards British playerEmma Raducanuin February. The man followed Raducanu to at least four competitions earlier this year, and on noticing him in Dubai, the British starpreviously saidshe "couldn't see the ball through tears" due to her distress. British media reported that the man had tried to obtain tickets toWimbledon, but was flagged and blocked by the All England Club's security system. Raducanu praised Wimbledon for doing an "amazing job" at preventing the man accused of stalking her from buying tickets to the tournament. "Wimbledon and everyone did an amazing job. I got a notification, the police contacted me and told me everything was OK," Raducanu toldBBC Sport. "I know that I am not the first athlete to go through this, and I probably won't be the last – not just as an athlete, but females in general." Happy Bobby Bonilla Day! Why infamous contract became beloved MLB holidayNew Foto - Happy Bobby Bonilla Day! Why infamous contract became beloved MLB holiday

The first day of July marksBobby Bonilla Day, an annual celebration of one of the strangest deals in the history of Major League Baseball. Bonilla, a six-time All-Star who played his last game in 2001, has been receiving a $1.19 million check from theNew York Metsevery year since 2011, the result of a decision 25 years ago to delay paying the $5.9 million they owed him. Looking to dump Bonilla after the 1999 season, the Mets opted to defer his payment – with 8% interest – giving him $1,193,248.20 annually on July 1 from 2011-2035 – adding up to nearly $30 million. "It's bigger than my birthday,"Bonilla told USA TODAY Sports. "When that day comes, I get texts all day long, and couple of days after and maybe a day or two before. Everybody just seems to love that day and have fun with it. It's become a pretty big thing." Contract deferrals weren't new in baseball at the time and have been deployed heavily in the 25 years since Bonilla left the Mets, but the fact that he will be getting seven-figure checks until he's 72 years old is what most captivates the baseball world. "There'll be plenty of other deferred contracts," Bonilla's former agentDennis Gilbert told USA TODAY Sportsin 2023, "but for a guy to be paid that long into his life, into his 70s, I don't think we'll ever see that again. "That's why Bobby Bonilla Day should be celebrated." Bonilla signed a four-year, $23.3 million contract with the Marlins prior to the 1997 season and helped the team win its first World Series that year, but was traded to the Dodgers in 1998 as part of the club's infamous fire sale. Before the 1999 season, the Dodgers traded Bonilla to the Mets, who were looking for a new right fielder at the time – with New York assuming the remaining two years and $11.65 million on Bonilla's contract. Then 36 years old, Bonilla played just 60 regular season games for the Mets in 1999, batting .160. He was constantly booed by fans and clashed with manager Bobby Valentine over his playing time and was relegated to the bench for the team's postseason run. The Mets released Bonilla after the 1999 season but still owed him $5.9 million for 2000. The team worked with Bonilla's agent (Gilbert) to defer the $5.9 million – with 8% interest – to annual payments of $1,193,248.20 on July 1 from 2011 to 2035. "It's funny how the Bobby Bonilla thing has blown up,"agent Nez Balelo told USA TODAY Sports in 2023, months before negotiating Shohei Ohtani's historic$700 million deal with $680 million deferred. "I just think it's because someone has been out of the game for so long, making that much money every year, it fascinates people." The Mets' final "Bobby Bonilla Day" payment is set for 2035, when the six-time All-Star will be 72 years old. Though Bobby Bonilla Day remains something of a punchline and opportunity to laugh at the Mets, the team has embraced the situation since Steve Cohen bought the team. New York's new owner immediately joked about holding a Bobby Bonilla Daycelebration at Citi Field, complete with an oversized check. Bonilla played 2,113 career games in 16 seasons from 1986 to 2001, finishing with 287 home runs, a .279 average and an .829 OPS. Bonilla's best years came with the Pirates from 1987-1991, averaging 23 home runs and 97 RBIs per season. He was an All-Star four years in a row, winning three Silver Slugger awards, and was the 1990 NL MVP runner-up and finished third in MVP voting in 1991, his final year in Pittsburgh. He was also named an All-Star in 1993 and 1995 during his first tenure with the Mets. This article originally appeared on USA TODAY:What is Bobby Bonilla Day? Contract earned itself an MLB holiday

Start of NHL's free agency expected to lack frenzy with many high-profile players off the boardNew Foto - Start of NHL's free agency expected to lack frenzy with many high-profile players off the board

No Mitch Marner. No Aaron Ekblad. No Brad Marchand. No frenzy? With a majority of the NHL's top-projected free-agent talent already off the market, the 32 teams facerelatively slim pickingsentering the league's annual signing period opening Tuesday at noon EDT. Arecord $7.5 million jumpin the NHL's salary cap led to many teams locking up their own talent to long-term deals in advance of free agency. The Vegas Golden Knights proved the big winners, acquiring Marner in a sign-and-trade deal agreed to Monday with Toronto to land free-agency's most prized player. And the two-time defending championFlorida Panthers took Ekblad and Marchandoff the board by re-signing each to a lengthy contract. The Panthers weren't done securing their Cup core, re-signing Tomas Nosek to a one-year contract on Tuesday. The 32-year-old center played a valuable defensive role on Florida's checking line against opposing teams' top talent. With Marner's departure, the Maple Leafs announced the signing of pending restricted free agent forward Matthew Knies to a six-year, $46.5 million contract. The 22-year-old Knies is from Phoenix. He had 29 goals and 58 points in his second full season in Toronto. The Vancouver Canucks announced reaching an agreement to sign forward Conor Garland to a six-year, $30 million contract extension. The seventh-year player had one more year left on his existing deal, and is coming off his second career 50-point season (19 goals, 31 assists). As the dust settled, the top players entering the market include forwards, Winnipeg's Nikolaj Ehlers and Vancouver's Brock Boeser, Los Angeles defenseman Vladislav Gavrikov, and New Jersey goalie Jake Allen. Teams are expected to turn to the trade route in bids to improve their rosters. The Buffalo Sabres are among the candidates to be involved in those moves, not ruling out the possibility of dealing 24-year-old defenseman Bowen Byram. Another, and older, defenseman, Erik Karlsson, could be on the move from Pittsburgh. And Minnesota Wild center Marco Rossi's name has come up in trade buzz. By no means is this year's free agency period expected to generate the headline-grabbing moves made a year ago, when theNashville Predators spent a combined $115 millionin salary to secure forwards Steven Stamkos and Jonathan Marchessault, defenseman Brady Skjei and goalie Scott Wedgewood. But plenty of money is set to be spent. San Jose is nearly $20 million below the salary floor, and teams from Anaheim to Carolina and beyond have room under the cap to get better. ___ AP NHL:https://apnews.com/hub/nhl

Boston Red Soxright fielderWilyer Abreuhad a two home run night, but it was one of the most unique combinations ever as he did something that hadn't been done in an MLB game in nearly 67 years. Abreu had an inside-the-park home run against theCincinnati Redsbefore he hit a typical homer later in the contest − in grand fashion. In the bottom of the fifth inning, Abreu took Joe La Sorsa's pitch to center field in the deep corner of Fenway Park. The ball bounced off the wall and took a long bounce along the warning track. Abreu turned on the jets after the wild ricochet, with no Reds player in the vicinity of the ball. The ball was eventually grabbed, but by the time it got to Elly De La Cruz in the shallow part of the outfield, Abreu was sliding home for the inside-the-park homer. Soccer ban sparks fears of widening trans exclusion in the UKNew Foto - Soccer ban sparks fears of widening trans exclusion in the UK

LONDON (AP) — It was not herbest goal or most important soccer match, but when the ball hit the back of the net in Natalie Washington's debut on a women's team in 2017, she felt a sense of belonging that had been missing. It was long in coming: Washington had struggled to fit in on a men's team and eventually stopped playing when she decided to transition to being a woman and go through gender-affirming surgery. When she joined a women's team, she quickly felt accepted. Now, after theUnited Kingdom's highest courtin April said that for anti-discrimination purposes the terms "woman" and "man" refer to biological sex, Washington's opportunity to play the sport she loves in the league she wants is in doubt. The head of theU.K's Equality and Human Rights Commissionfollowed the ruling a day later by saying the court had provided clarity and that transgender women would be excluded from women-only spaces such as toilets, single-sex hospital wards and sports teams. The Football Association, the regulatory body for soccer in the U.K., followed up by banning transgender players from women's teams in England and Scotland, a ban that took effect at the start of June. "It feels like things are being taken away from trans people on an almost daily basis," Washington said. "It's another blow, another kick at a time when people are already hurting." Long a divisive issue Beyond Britain, inclusion of trans players in sports has long been a divisive issue, with arguments primarily focused on whether it's fair to have athletes born as boys compete against girls and women. In the U.S., it has been particularly politicized, with most Republican-controlled statesbanning transgender athletes in girls' sportsand PresidentDonald Trumpsigning an executive order toprohibit participation of transgender athletesfrom girls' and women's sports. The U.K. court said trans people were still protected from discrimination under British law, such as in employment, housing and education, but the ruling means access to certain single-sex facilities could be curtailed. Trans rights groups condemned the decision, which is likely to have a profound effect for thousands. Out of some 66 million people in England, Scotland and Wales, about 116,000 identified as trans in the latest census count. The feminist groups who led the legal challenge cheered the ruling and others, including Prime Minister Keir Starmer, welcomed the clarity it brought. "Everyone knows what sex is and you can't change it," said Susan Smith, co-director of For Women Scotland, which brought the case. A difficult decision Washington, who leads the group Football v Transphobia, was one of 28 transgender women registered with the Football Association to play amateur soccer. In order to play the women's game, they had to have testosterone levels reduced to the range of biologically born females. After the ruling, the organization changed its rules, saying that although it had aimed to make soccer accessible to as many people as possible, it was always prepared to alter its policy if there were changes in the law or science. "We understand that this will be difficult for people who simply want to play the game they love in the gender by which they identify," the FA said, adding that it would contact transgender women currently playing to explain the changes and how they can remain involved. Some clubs have responded by finding ways around the ban. Goal Diggers FC, a women and nonbinary inclusive soccer club based in London, has withdrawn from all FA-affiliated leagues. On June 1, the day the ban took effect, Goal Diggers hosted an inclusive women's tournament in London, drawing more than 100 players in a show of solidarity. "I'll always have a place here and I'll always be a trans woman," said Billie Sky, a 28-year-old trans player for Goal Diggers. "No one can take that away from me." Other voices, other sports Groups that have campaigned to keep trans athletes from girls' and women's teams, citing a matter of safety and fairness, welcomed the move by the FA. "The FA had ample evidence of the harms to women and girls caused by its nonsensical policy of letting men who identify as women play in women's teams," said Fiona McAnena of Sex Matters. Groups that oversee cricket and netball, an offshoot of basketball that is played mainly by women, also limited women's competition to those who were assigned at birth as females. The England and Wales Cricket Board said transgender women and girls could continue playing in open and mixed cricket. England Netball said it would allow anyone to play in a new mixed category beginning in September. How the ruling came about The legal case involved a 2018 Scottish law requiring at least half of the seats on public boards to be held by women. Trans women with certificates recognizing their gender were to be included in meeting the quota. The court said that using the certificates to identify someone's gender clashes with the definitions of man and woman. Under the ruling, a transgender person could not claim they had been discriminated against if barred from a single-sex space. Alexander Maine, a senior lecturer at The City Law School specializing in gender, sexuality and law, said the ruling clouds the value of a document sanctioned by the U.K. Gender Recognition Act that allows them to later update their birth certificate reflecting their acquired gender. "There may be a challenge at the European Court of Human Rights brought by trans individuals who say that there is a problem where they may be two sexes at once," Maine said. Someone could hold "a gender recognition certificate stating that they are their acquired gender, whereas under the U.K. Equality Act, they are still recognized in their birth gender," he said. Washington and many others say they worry the ruling may lead to more hatred aimed at trans people. "For the first time in a long time, I felt scared about how people are going to react to me in public," Washington said. "I don't feel anymore that I can guarantee I have support to turn to from authorities." ___ Brian Melley in London contributed to this report.

Mitch Marner, the NHL'stop 2025 unrestricted free agent, is off the list after being traded to theVegas Golden Knightsand agreeing to an eight-year, $96 million contract a day before free agency opens, according to multiplereports. TheToronto Maple Leafswill receive center Nicolas Roy in the June 30 trade, giving them a return for a player they could have lost for nothing. Last year, theCarolina Hurricanesreceived only a third-round pick for Jake Guentzel when they traded his rights to theTampa Bay Lightningbefore free agency opened. Marner had 102 points this past season, fifth best in the league and eight more than Jack Eichel, the Golden Knights' leading scorer in 2024-25. At a $12 million average, Marner will be the Golden Knights' top-paid player, though Eichel ($10 million cap hit) is in the final year of his contract and is eligible to sign an extension. The Golden Knights had to move players to make the money work. Roy ($3 million) had 31 points for Vegas and has two years left on his deal. The team alsotraded defenseman Nicolas Hagueto the Predators for forward Colton Sissons (Nashville retained half his salary) and defenseman Jeremy Lauzon. Hague signed a four-year, $22 million contact with Nashville. Marner ranks fifth in Maple Leafs history with 741 points in the regular season. The Maple Leafs also received forward Matias Maccelli in a trade with the Utah Mammoth on June 30. Though the Golden Knights are adding Marner, they will be without defenseman Alex Pietrangelo, one of the top acquisitions in franchise history. Pietrangelo and general manager Kelly McCrimmon put out statements on the defenseman's health. Said Pietrangelo: "The past few years have been very challenging on my physical well-being, and I am in a difficult position with my overall playing health. After exploring options with doctors as well as my family, it's been advised to remove the intensity of hockey to see if my body can improve so that I can return to a normal quality of life. This decision has been difficult to come to terms with after the last 17 years of competition and the camaraderie with my teammates and coaches. The likelihood is low that my body will recover to the standard required to play, but I know this is the right decision for me and my family." Said McCrimmon: "Alex has our organization's full support in prioritizing his long-term health and quality of life. Alex is dealing with hips that would require bilateral femur reconstruction, with no guarantee of success. Throughout the season, the steps that Alex needed to take to be able to play and practice began to grow and take a significant toll on his body. Our hope in February during the NHL's break for the 4 Nations Face-Off was to give Alex treatment and rest to help provide relief, but instead, what we found were diminished positive results and a process that is no longer sustainable moving forward. "Alex has given everything to the game and to the Golden Knights and has played through significant challenges in the pursuit of trying to win another Stanley Cup in Vegas. He is one of the most respected players in the league, not only for his elite talent but for his character, leadership, competitiveness, and professionalism. Today's decision is a difficult one for both Alex and the Golden Knights, but it is being made for the right reasons – so that Alex can be the family man we all know him to be." Reds phenom Chase Burns can't get out of 1st inning in 2nd start after memorable MLB debutNew Foto - Reds phenom Chase Burns can't get out of 1st inning in 2nd start after memorable MLB debut

BOSTON (AP) — Cincinnati Reds phenom Chase Burns went from a memorable major league debut to a miserable second start against the Boston Red Sox on Monday night. After becoming the first starting pitcher in the expansion era tostrike out the first five big league hitters he facedTuesday against the New York Yankees, the 22-year-old righty was tagged for seven runs, five earned, and got only one out as theRed Sox beat the Reds 13-6. Trevor Story hit a three-run homer in the first inning as Boston collected five hits and had two walks against the righty. "I hope it doesn't get in the way of his next start," Reds manager Terry Francona said. "That's tough. Tough on him, tough on us. A lot of people were putting their arm around him. He's a good kid. It'll be real interesting to see his next start." Burns, selected second overall by the Reds inJuly's amateur draft, walked the leadoff batter, Jarren Duran, on a 99.9 mph fastball. "Just trying to flush it and go back to the drawing board, see what works and what didn't work and go from there," Burns said. Francona was asked if he may have been tipping his pitches. "That's something that you always probably need to check," he said. "He threw some pitches that caught a lot of the plate and they were definitely looking (fastball) and those are always things we try to check for." Francona went on to say that one of his former players — Red Sox manager Alex Cora — is good at picking things up. "Cora is one of the best at that,'' he said. "They were certainly ready, they were coming out hacking and they were squaring it up pretty good." Burns didn't know if that could have been part of his problem despite throwing a fastball near 100 mph with a hard slider in the upper 80s. "I don't know. They put a lot of good swings on a lot of good pitches, a lot of mistakes out there," he said. "Couldn't really tell you." His defense also let him down when Roman Anthony hit a grounder that second baseman Matt McLain threw into short left field, attempting to get a force. Abraham Toro lined a single to left for the first run and Carlos Narváez followed by hitting the next pitch for an RBI double off the Green Monster. After a ground out, Story belted a 1-1 slider into the center-field bleachers, making it 5-0. Story took some extra BP on the field about 3 ½ hours before the game, hitting fastballs. It may have been part of Boston's plan. "He's got electric stuff," he said. "I think we as an offense, we had a really good plan, and we were very convicted. We practiced the execution all day, and the execution really came out today during the game." David Hamilton added an RBI single and Francona lifted Burns after his second walk. Anthony added an RBI single against Brent Suter, completing Burns' pitching line. ___ AP MLB:https://apnews.com/hub/mlb

2025 NBA free agency: Early winners and losers, including the Rockets, Lakers and a pair of former MVPsNew Foto - 2025 NBA free agency: Early winners and losers, including the Rockets, Lakers and a pair of former MVPs

Your winners and losers from a (mostly) dud of a night on the opening of theNBA's free-agency period... The Rockets did most of their work early, including a trade for Kevin Durant on June 22, which was big business at a discount rate. They dealt Jalen Green, Dillon Brooks and four second-round draft picks for a 15-time All-Star. In order to make that many All-Star rosters, you must be getting old by NBA standards, and Durant will turn 37 in September. He still averaged a 27-6-4 on 53/43/84 shooting splits last season. Houston hopes Durant can transform it from a No. 2 seed that lost in the first round of the Western Conference playoffs to a bona fide contender, and it is acting accordingly, spending everywhere it can. [NBA free agent tracker: Latest signings and deal details] The Rockets declined Fred VanVleet's $45 million option for next season and instead signed him to a two-year, $50 million deal. They used any savings and then some to spend $122 million over five years on Jabari Smith Jr., $39 million over three years on Steven Adams and $10 million combined next season on Jeff Green, Aaron Holiday and Jae'Sean Tate. They also gave head coach Ime Udoka a contract extension. This would make them offseason winners. But they were not satisfied. As free agency opened Monday evening, the Rockets stole the first high-profile free agent of the night, signing Dorian Finney-Smithaway from the Los Angeles Lakers for $53 million over four years (or the non-taxpayer mid-level exception). The Lakers traded D'Angelo Russell, Maxwell Lewis and three second-round picks to the Brooklyn Nets for Finney-Smith in December, and he performed his role as a 3-and-D wing admirably for L.A. It was believed Finney-Smith's history with Luka Dončić on the Dallas Mavericks might assure his return to the Lakers, who absolutely wanted to keep him, but it seems he wanted out of L.A. at the first opportunity. Or maybe the money — and the opportunity to compete for a championship (sorry, Lakers) — was too good in Houston. Either way, the Rockets just got deeper and more flexible with the addition of Finney-Smith, who for the first time in his nine-year career shot better than 40% from distance for a season. He plays hard on defense, too, and that will make another fine fit for Udoka's system of earning your keep. I'm not as wild about the Rockets signing Clint Capela away from the Atlanta Hawks for $21.5 million over three years, when Adams and Alperen Şengün are already on the roster, but go big or go home, I guess. As the second round of the NBA Draft unfolded last week, ESPN's Shams Charania reported Giannis Antetokounmpo was closely monitoring whom his Milwaukee Bucks were adding to the roster, shortly before they drafted a European, Boboljub Marković, whom they plan to stash for at least a season. And, again, as free agency opened, they lost center Brook Lopez to atwo-year, $18 million dealwith the Los Angeles Clippers. Not that he was exceptional for Milwaukee last season. He averaged 13 points (on 51/37/83 shooting splits), 5 rebounds, 1.9 blocks and 1.8 assists in 31.8 minutes over 80 games in 2024-25. But he has been a big part of what Milwaukee has done in recent years, especially on the 2021 championship run. To lose any part, without a reasonable replacement waiting in the wings on the first night of free agency, is a tough pill to swallow, and one that might cause Antetokounmpo to hiccup. I don't know if retaining Kevin Porter Jr., Gary Trent Jr. and Taurean Prince moves the needle, either. The Nuggets limped to the finish line this past season and still pushed the eventual champion Oklahoma City Thunder to seven games in a second-round playoff series, mostly because Nikola Jokić is awesome. Michael Porter Jr. had his non-shooting shoulder wrapped for that playoff run, so it is hard to blame him for his wayward production, but he was not exactly a model of dependability when healthy for the Nuggets. So theytraded him on Monday for Cameron Johnsonfrom the Brooklyn Nets. Johnson may not be as explosive a shooting threat as Porter, but he is more consistent, and their numbers are a close call. Johnson:18.8 PTS (48/39/89), 4.3 REB, 3.4 AST Porter:18.2 PTS (50/40/77), 7 REB, 2.1 AST In addition to the acquisition of Johnson, the Nuggets added Bruce Brown, an invaluable member of their 2023 championship push, for the veteran minimum. Two years ago, before he left Denver for an offer he could not refuse from the Indiana Pacers, Brown buoyed the second unit and served as an active cutter for Jokić's brilliant passing. He always seemed to be in the right place and injected energy everywhere. Really, any time Jokić gets two new weapons, it is a win. The Grizzlies certainly did a lot of stuff. After trading up to draft Cedric Coward in the first round, as soon as free agency opened they agreed to renegotiate the final year of Jaren Jackson Jr.'s contract andextend him for five years and $240 million. That is a lot of money for a center who grabbed 5.6 rebounds per game last season, but he is a Defensive Player of the Year when engaged on that end and a stretch big who can create for himself. It is a good foundation to keep Jackson and Ja Morant as centerpieces of what they hope is a quick reconstruction of the roster after they traded Desmond Bane for a pick-heavy haul from the Orlando Magic. Do not be surprised if the Grizzlies are a sneaky tough out in a crowded Western Conference. They certainly acted accordingly in free agency, re-signing Santi Aldama to a three-year, $52.5 million deal andstealing Ty Jeromefrom the Cleveland Cavaliers for $27.7 million over three seasons. Jerome was a Sixth Man of the Year candidate this past season who will come in handy when Morant misses games, especially now that Memphis is reportedly working to move the newly acquired Cole Anthony elsewhere. All in all, the Grizzlies got a little bit better on free agency's first night, after the trade of Bane may have made them a good bit worse. They will remain an interesting team in the West, so long as Morant stays healthy and Jackson finds reason for another step forward in his career. Their work should not be done. Not only did the Lakers lose Finney-Smith, their biggest splash on the first night of free agency was the acquisition of Jake LaRavia on a two-year, $12 million deal. LaRavia is a decent player who shot 42.3% on a couple 3-point attempts per game last season, but let's just say the fans won't be lining up to buy their LaRavia jerseys. Or maybe they will. But they'll be on eBay when he isn't their next Austin Reaves. The Grizzlies felt fine tossing LaRavia into their salary dump of Marcus Smart's contract at the trade deadline, and he wasn't missed much, playing spot duty for the sub-.500 Sacramento Kings. What's worse for the Lakers: They, like the rest of us, don't know what to make of this statement from LeBron James' agent, Rich Paul, shortly after his client picked up his $52.6 million option for next year: "LeBron wants to compete for a championship. He knows the Lakers are building for the future. He understands that, but he values a realistic chance of winning it all. We are very appreciative of the partnership that we've had for eight years with Jeanie [Buss] and Rob [Pelinka] and consider the Lakers as a critical part of his career. "We understand the difficulty in winning now while preparing for the future. We do want to evaluate what's best for LeBron at this stage in his life and career. He wants to make every season he has left count, and the Lakers understand that, are supportive and want what's best for him." News flash: A $52.6 million salary for a 40-year-old is part ofthe reason why it is so difficult to build a winner around Dončićin L.A. and much of the reason why there is little wiggle room to add more talent. The Hawks were already winners, trading the No. 22 overall pick in this year's draft in a three-team deal that landed them Kristaps Porziņģis, and they recouped a better first-round selection — an unprotected pick from either the Bucks or the New Orleans Pelicans in 2026 — in a draft-night trade. It was a good bit of business that got better Monday, when theHawks added Nickeil Alexander-Walker(via sign-and-trade with the Minnesota Timberwolves) and Luke Kennard. Atlanta is now loaded with wings in the positions between Porziņģis and All-Star point guard Trae Young, including rising star Jalen Johnson, Most Improved Player Dyson Daniels and last year's No. 1 overall pick, Zaccharie Risacher. What a fun team these Hawks will be in a watered-down Eastern Conference. They have a chance now. The opening night of free agency was once a wild time and another reason people loved this league. It was, for a second straight summer, largely a bust. Whether the second apron is to blame, nobody but the Brooklyn Nets had a ton of cap space, and they did not seem all that interested in using it, other than to take on bad salaries for more draft capital. Likewise, last year's decision to allow teams to negotiate with their own free agents ahead of free agency once again robbed us of a few breaking news stories on Monday night. The trickling of those deals in the days before June 30 further removed some of the luster from one of the NBA's great tentpole days. Man, has it been a weird year for the Mavericks. They traded Dončić, somehow landed the No. 1 overall pick, drafted Cooper Flagg and began anew — a year removed from reaching the NBA Finals. General manager Nico Harrison sure took a lot of credit for what seemed like luck, acting as if this was his vision. It cannot give Mavericks fans great confidence that Harrison has turned over a new leaf when his first order of business was tosign D'Angelo Russellfor two years and $11.7 million. Sure, the Mavericks needed a point guard in the absence of an injured Kyrie Irving, and sure, that is a fine price for Russell, but they just drafted Flagg, who plays the right way, and I wouldn't want to pair him with anybody who doesn't. Shoutout Luke Kornet, who was a good Celtic — a true joy in the locker room and a solid contributor in his minutes. Once an undrafted free agent on the New York Knicks and once a throw-in to a fringe trade involving Daniel Theis, he worked himself into a rim-protecting and rim-running big man who just knows where to be at all times. It is those traits that earned him a four-year, $41 million deal from the San Antonio Spurs, for whom he will be playing alongside Victor Wembanyama in a frightening frontcourt. Shoutout Kevon Looney, who earned 10 seasons on the Golden State Warriors, never averaging more than seven points per game and somehow making himself an invaluable member of three championship teams. He is parting the Bay Area to take $16 million over two seasons with the New Orleans Pelicans. Good dudes seem to be getting good contracts, which is good to see. The same could be said of Finney-Smith and Alexander-Walker. Get the bag, gentlemen. It pays to put in the work.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Gunnar Henderson drove in four runs in extra innings and the Baltimore Orioles beat the Texas Rangers 10-6 in 11 innings on Monday night. With the score tied 3-3 in the 10th, Henderson hit a two-run homer over the right-field wall and Colton Cowser added a solo shot for a three-run lead. However,Adolis García smashed a three-run home runoff the facade of the second deck in the bottom half to tie it 6-6. In the 11th, Luis Vazquez singled into center to off Hoby Milner (1-2) score Ryan O'Hearn from second. Vazquez scored on Ramon Laureano's third double of the game. Henderson then hit a two-run double off the right-field wall. It was the fourth consecutive extra-inning game for the Rangers to tie a team record set in 2002. The Orioles are 20-10 against the Rangers since 2021. Keegan Akin (3-0) blew another save before picking up the win. Baltimore starter Trevor Rogers led off the top of the fourth because of an injury to catcher Chadwick Tromp. The Orioles had to move designated hitter Gary Sanchez to catcher and Rogers took Tromp's spot in the order. Key moment The Rangers used a crazy play in the seventh to tie it at 3-3 when rookie Michael Helman scored from first. He was hit in the helmet sliding into second and the ball went into center field. Helman came home to score when Sanchez couldn't secure the ball. Key stat Laureano, who went 4 for 6 with three runs scored, extended his streak to six straight games with at least one hit and one run scored. Up next Orioles RHP Charlie Morton (4-7, 5.63 ERA) is scheduled start against the Rangers RHP Jacob deGrom (8-2, 2.08) on Tuesday. ___ AP MLB:https://apnews.com/hub/mlb

Putellas ready to lead Spain at Euro 2025 after injury sidelined her in 2022New Foto - Putellas ready to lead Spain at Euro 2025 after injury sidelined her in 2022

MADRID (AP) — Alexia Putellas doesn't have fond memories of the last Women's European Championship, when she tore a knee ligament on the eve of the tournament in England three years ago. Things are different now as Spain prepares for its campaign at Euro 2025 in Switzerland, with Putellas saying she's better than ever and ready to try tolead Spain to its first titlein the competition. "I'm not going to lie, it's a competition that I had in my sights after the injury I suffered just before the start of the last Euro," she said. "I've been preparing for this moment for a long time and I want to enjoy it." The two-time world player of the year was coming off one of her most impressive seasons when she injured her left knee during a practice session just days before Spain's opener at Euro 2022. It kept her out of action for nearly a year and dealt a blow to Spain's chances in the tournament, where it was ousted by England in the quarterfinals. Putellas says she has improved a lot since then, even though other Spanish players such as Aitana Bonmatí — a two-time Ballon d'Or winner herself — have emerged as top stars. "Without a doubt I'm a better Alexia," she said. "I know myself a lot better, I know my qualities, I know what I have been working on. In the end, all the suffering makes you evolve as a person and as an athlete. I've learned to manage the bad moments a lot better, as well as the good moments." Putellas has had another outstanding season and is again among the favorites for the world player of the year award. She thrived as Barcelona won the domestic treble and reached another Champions League final. "The individual award is not something too important for me," the 31-year-old Putellas said. "But it would show that you've done something good and, from where I'm coming from — from the lowest of the lowest after the injury — it would give some value to the effort that it was put into the recovery. We'll see, but the most important thing is to win the Euro." Bonmatí won the last two world player of the year awards, and she is now the one enduring an ordeal as after falling ill with viral meningitis just a few days before Spain traveled to Switzerland for the tournament. Bonmatí wasreleased from the hospitalon Sunday to rejoin the national squad, but it still wasn't clear how much she would participate. Spain will open its tournament Thursday against Portugal. It will also face Belgium and Italy in Group B. The nation's best result in the European tournament was a semifinals appearance in 1997. Spain established itself as one of the powerhouses in women's soccer by winning the World Cup in 2023 and the inaugural Women's Nations League in 2024. It then just missed out on a medal at the Paris Olympics, when it lost to Brazil in the semifinals and to Germany in the bronze-medal match. "It's never easy to win a Euro," Putellas said. "We need to have maximum respect toward the other nations. There are great teams participating. But we have a lot of faith in our team, and if we give our best we will be that much closer to winning." ___ AP soccer:https://apnews.com/hub/soccer
