The sportsman's cause of death was ruled as drowning during an inquest at Milton Keynes Coroners Court in England on Wednesday, July 23. The coroner concluded the manner of death was accidental. Baldock, who was born in the U.K. but also held Greek nationality, was found dead in the pool of his home in Athens, Greece on Oct. 9, 2024. "A post mortem examination confirmed that there were no drugs or alcohol in his system and that he had a very large heart that would have meant that he was susceptible to heart arrhythmias," a record of inquest obtained by PEOPLE reads. The document added that attempts at resuscitating Baldock after he was found were unsuccessful. An investigation into his death started on Oct. 22, 2024 followed by an inquest on April 10, 2025. According to theMayo Clinic, heart arrhythmias are irregular heart beats caused when "the electrical signals that tell the heart to beat don't work properly. The heart may beat too fast or too slow. Or the pattern of the heartbeat may be inconsistent." PEOPLE previously reported that the soccer player could not be revived after police tried cardiopulmonary resuscitation on him. Authorities found no evidence of foul play and a local coroner initially suggested that Baldock had died of drowning. According to theBBC, his body was found at 10:30 p.m. local time. The defender, who was playing for Greek team Panathinaikos at the time of his death, also played for the Greece national team and English teams Sheffield United in England and Milton Keynes Dons.
