Scherzer and Kershaw square off in rare duel of 3,000-strikeout club membersNew Foto - Scherzer and Kershaw square off in rare duel of 3,000-strikeout club members

LOS ANGELES (AP) —Max Scherzer and Clayton Kershawwent toe-to-toe for six innings in a vintage duel Friday night between the two most recent additions to the 3,000-strikeout club. The 41-year-old Scherzer, pitching for Toronto, made his 465th career start. Kershaw, 37, started his 443rd game — all for the Los Angeles Dodgers over 18 seasons. "Probably a lineup card that I'll keep for my office," Blue Jays manager John Schneider said. Once teammates in Los Angeles, both pitchers have won three Cy Young Awards and are likely headed to the Hall of Fame. "Two great competitors," Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said before the game. "I don't know if you're going to see this one again." Kershaw (6-2) got the win, allowing one run and seven hits asLos Angeles earned a 5-1 victory. He struck out four and walked one on 74 pitches, 54 strikes. And he stuck around to watch his rival work when the Dodgers were batting. "Scherz was throwing the ball great. He was throwing like 96 (mph)," Kershaw said. "It doesn't look like he's aged at all." Scherzer (2-2) took the loss, giving up two runs and six hits. He struck out five and walked three on 98 pitches, 63 strikes. "Max had really good stuff," Roberts said. Kershaw exited with the Dodgers leading 2-1, thanks to a two-run homer by Mookie Betts in the fifth. The left-hander was a model of efficiency in the first inning, retiring the Blue Jays on 11 pitches. Los Angeles went right after Scherzer in the bottom half. Shohei Ohtani and Betts hit consecutive line-drive singles before Davis Schneider robbed Will Smith of a potential three-run homer with a catch against the Dodgers bullpen gate in left field. Scherzer walked Max Muncy to load the bases before striking out Teoscar Hernández to end the inning. Scherzer retired the side in the second and third. Kershaw had traffic on the bases in the second, when Addison Barger's two-strike single scored Bo Bichette and gave Toronto a 1-0 lead. With a runner at first, Dodgers rookie second baseman Alex Freeland raced into shallow right field to catch a blooper by Ernie Clement for the third out of the fifth. A relieved Kershaw smiled and pointed his index finger skyward. It was the fourth time Scherzer and Kershaw faced each other, and Kershaw's teams lead their individual series 3-1. Kershaw has two wins and Scherzer one. The first matchup was unexpected. Hall of Famers Randy Johnson of Arizona and Greg Maddux of the Dodgers were scratched on Sept. 7, 2008. Their replacements were rookies Scherzer, then 24, and Kershaw, then 20, who each got a no-decision. "He's had a hell of a career," Scherzer said. "It's kind of a cool little milestone moment here where we're hooking it back up against each other. He's an awesome teammate as well. I've got all the respect in the world for what he does on and off the field." Roberts managed Scherzer when the Dodgers traded for him in the second half of the 2021 season, when he became the 19th pitcher in MLB history tonotch his 3,000th strikeout. Having Kershaw already in the fold helped prepare Roberts. "Those guys are in very rare company, and when you have an opportunity to manage people like that and superstars, it does help you understand how they think, what makes them tick," he said. Unlike Kershaw, Scherzer likes to talk "all the time," Roberts said. "He's got a lot of answers, but they're valid answers because he's always thinking the game," Roberts said. "He'll talk to hitters, get in hitters' meetings. He's always trying to pick people's brains to get some type of edge, which as a coach, that's a good thing." Kershaw became the 20th memberof the 3,000-strikeout club in July at Dodger Stadium. "It's really cool that Scherz was the guy right before me to get to 3,000. I got to play with him, I got to compete against him, basically our whole careers," Kershaw said. "I don't know if it's our last year, but toward the end, for sure. It's been a fun ride." Both pitchers are known for being extremely competitive. Where they differ is Scherzer is more demonstrative than Kershaw. Roberts recalled the reaction he got for patting Scherzer on his rear end in the middle of a game in 2021. "I heard a curse word after I did it," he said. "That's pretty intense." ___ AP MLB:https://apnews.com/MLB

'Sell the team': Fed-up fans' passionate cry is spreading through sportsNew Foto - 'Sell the team': Fed-up fans' passionate cry is spreading through sports

BALTIMORE – It was a cry that emanated, as it often does, from the cheap seats, so high above the playing field thatAthleticsplayers on the field at Nationals Park earlier this week did not hear the chant they're so familiar with yet, for once, was not aimed at their franchise. "Sell! The! Team! Sell! The! Team!" On this August evening, it wasn't desperate and determined fans of theOakland Athleticsimploring owner John Fisher to sell their beloved franchise in the name of competence and to ensure a future in the Bay Area. That future is gone. No, this time, it was the opposition:Washington Nationalsfans, disgusted with their club giving up 54 runs in four games amid a flailing rebuild and uncertain regime change, voiced their displeasure with theLerner family's ownershipand their desire for more robust stewardship. Some fans were even clad in T-shirts with the "Sell The Team" message, the Nationals' iconic curly W flipped upside down to form the "m" in "team." Certainly, ire at the executive branch did not begin with Fisher's gutting of the A's, subsequent pit stop in Sacramento and, he hopes, ultimate destination in Las Vegas. Yet in the years since "SELL" T-shirts became de rigueur in the background of live shots from A's games, fans across baseball and the sporting world seem to have found a louder voice. A USA TODAY Sports analysis shows that 12 MLB teams have engaged in the chant in varying degrees of organization the past three years, perhaps indicating fans have taken a cue from Oakland's highly-publicized unrest to demand more from their ownership groups. The three-word plea can come spontaneously, or after significant planning, or sometimes to simply prove a grander point. In Denver, it was heard when the woebegone Rockies hit a low point this season,a 21-0 lossto the San Diego Padres that dropped their record to 6-33. (No, they didn't sell the team, but they didfire the managera day later.) On Chicago's South Side, "Sell the team" has been a refrainat leastthree yearsrunning, with longtime owner Jerry Reinsdorf presiding over 101- and 121-loss seasons and another 100-loss campaign in the offing. Yet the cries have been most extreme in Pittsburgh. In many markets, the chant occurs late in games, the score lopsided, the crowd count dwindling and those remaining well-served. Yet after more than three decades of almost uninterrupted futility, Pirates fans save their disgust for owner Bob Nutting for the most high-profile moments. Like Opening Day, where the season wasn't even an hour old beforea plane flew a bannerover the stadium bearing the message and chants rang out before yet another loss. Or Paul Skenes bobblehead day, when a sellout crowdrecited the phraseon a day honoring the franchise player. And the team's third sellout of the season? That was on Pittsburgh legend Mac Miller's bobblehead day, when lines to get in stretched back to the Clemente Bridge – and the team's loss that day incited anotherchorus of chants. Heck, the protest even commuted up the road to PPG Paints Arena, when Pittsburgh native Pat McAfee hosted his "Big Night Aht" and McAfee was forced to sidebar with WWE broadcaster Michael Coleto explainexactly what the crowd was chanting. It's virtually endemic at this point, to the point the Seattle Mariners, now poised to claim an American League playoff berth, caught the "Sell" stray earlier this year, when a group of fans landed on the big screen in shirts that read, "Go Mariners!" only toturn in unisonand reveal the message on the other side: Sell the team. For the players there at the beginning of this run, it conjures up memories but also a desire for things to be, well, normal. Two years have passed since the"Summer of Sell,"when A's fans organized a boycott of the team and marked the top of the fifth inning of every game – home and road – to remain silent for one batter before beginning a "Sell the team" chant. It was an emotional two-year ride, during which the A's finalized plans to move to Las Vegas, fans staged an emotional "reverse boycott" and finally, spent 2024 bidding farewell to the Coliseum, and Oakland. "It's crazy because I enjoyed my time in the Coliseum. It's such a unique place and it's sad that they're not playing there anymore," says Ryan Noda, the A's first baseman in 2023 now with the Baltimore Orioles. "Talking to (A's players), they're like, 'I'd never thought I'd miss the Coliseum so much, but I do.' The last two games there were pretty awesome. "But in '23, it was pretty crazy. There'd be games when there was nobody in the stands, save for the true diehards. I feel for the fan base. Because it's such a storied franchise. And it's sad to see that happen but at the same time, it's a business, on both sides, when it comes to location and players." It's business, but always personal with fans. Though the A's may be laying over for three seasons at a Class AAA park in Sacramento, fans nonetheless fill the Yolo County night with chants of "Let's Go Oakland," and "Sell the team." Brent Rooker, the A's two-time All-Star outfielder, committed to the long haul when he signed a $65 million extension through at least 2029, which should ostensibly cover their first two years in Las Vegas. The "sell" movement was at full tilt in his first All-Star season, when the 2023 All-Star Game featured both the now traditional fifth inning chant as well as a "sell" serenade when Rooker came to bat. Rooker has appreciated the fans' fervor. Yet 400 games into his Athletics career, increasingly surrounded byhigh-achievingteammates, he'd appreciate perhaps a bit more fan focus between the white lines. "There's both sides to it, I guess. You respect people's right to voice their opinion," says Rooker, on pace for his third consecutive 30-homer season. "At the same time, you kind of wish that energy was directed more toward supporting what's happening on the field, because we're giving a lot of effort and work really hard and a lot goes into going out and competing every night. "So, you see both sides of it. you respect people's rights to voice their opinions. But there are times we wished that energy was directed more at supporting what we're doing on the field." Yet inept or at least inadequate ownership is the hardest thing in sports to shake; barring high corporate crimes or misdemeanors, the owner is the one piece of a franchise that can't be eradicated. And that's why "sell" has swept through several sports. In the NFL, it hit at Soldier Field last December, during the Chicago Bears'particularly desultory6-3 loss to the Seattle Seahawks. Woody Johnson'sNew York Jetsheard itin an October game at MetLife Stadium. It was a staple atWashington Commanders gamesuntil owner Daniel Snyder finally did, in fact, sell the team, though not until his wife's image on the scoreboard was greeted with boos and pleas to sell. And as his latest training campsuperstar staredownunfolded, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones took a verbal ribbing and fans toted signsurging him to sellon Aug. 2. Only drastic times seem to inspire the chant in the NBA, such as when theDetroit Pistonslost their25thconsecutive gamein December 2023, or New York Knicks fansgrew exhaustedof owner James Dolan's decades of mismanagement in March 2020. Even Major League Soccer got a piece of the action, with Philadelphia Union fans organizing a Coliseum-like period of silence before launchingits sell chant. Yet fan messages that counter team talking points or state-sponsored pablum are often met with suppression. Commanders fans were directed to remove bags from their face with the sell suggestion on them. A Knicks fan who chanted "sell the team"says he was "interrogated"by security before exiting Madison Square Garden. During one of the Pirates' "sell" chants this season, the team broadcastcut the crowd noiseuntil the chanting ceased. And the A's "reverse boycott" gamehas been scrubbedfrom MLB.TV's June 2023 archives. That leaves just the public square – arena, stadium, pitch – for the fan to know they'll be heard – if not by management, then certainly the participants. "I guess it goes back to freedom of speech and why the United States is so awesome," says Noda. "I don't know how much front offices and owners pay attention. "But players, we hear it. And going through it for a whole year was weird. But we knew they weren't saying it to us. We knew they still backed us and treated us like we were players. And they knew how hard we worked and how hard we wanted to get a win. At the end of the day, we kind of just blocked it out on our end and waited for them to cheer." Altercation between player and fan mars return of Tom Brady's Birmingham City to English soccer's second tierNew Foto - Altercation between player and fan mars return of Tom Brady's Birmingham City to English soccer's second tier

Birmingham City Football Clubdrew its first game in its return to theEFL Championship,English soccer's second tier, but the opening game festivities turned sour following an altercation between a fan and a player late on. The moment was captured on the TV broadcast which showed a fan appearing to make contact with Ipswich Town's Jack Taylor after the away side equalized in added time during the 1-1 draw. Newly promoted Birmingham City – the soccer club where legendary quarterbackTom Bradyis a minority owner – had taken the lead against Ipswich Town when star striker Jay Stansfield fired into an open net in the 55th minute. But with time running out, Ipswich Town's George Hirst calmly equalized from the penalty spot to give the visiting side a share of the points at St. Andrew's @ Knighthead Park, Birmingham. The decision to award the late penalty kick was a contentious one and tensions boiled over during Ipswich Town's celebrations. Players from both teams pushed and grabbed hold of each other as the incident moved past the goal and toward the section of fans behind it. Footage then shows a fan jumping over the barriers toward the players where he appeared to make contact with Ipswich Town's Taylor. This fan was then pulled away from the crowd of players by stadium security. "I think there might have been an incident with the crowd and one of the players, to be honest, that maybe wasn't ideal," Ipswich Town head coach Kieran McKenna told the Sky Sports broadcast after the game. "It'll be seen or it'll be reported and let's see," McKenna added. The English Football Association (FA) told CNN on Saturday they were aware of the incident and will be investigating further. The West Midlands Police told CNN they are working with Birmingham City Football Club and are reviewing CCTV footage to establish the full circumstances. CNN has reached out to Birmingham City and Ipswich Town for comment. For more CNN news and newsletters create an account atCNN.com

Left-handed pitcher Alex Wood posted a long message on social media Friday announcing his retirement after 12 major league seasons that included a World Series title with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2020. Wood beganhis post on Instagramby saying he had "immense gratitude" following a career in which the 34-year-old was an All-Star selection in 2017 and reached the postseason seven times. "I never could've imagined it would turn out this way," Wood wrote. "Baseball was my first love. Outside of God and my family, nothing else has shaped me the way this game has," he added. "Even writing this, I can't help but smile thinking about how much I still love the game after all this time." Wood's retirement comes after he went 1-3 with a 5.26 ERA in nine starts for the Oakland Athletics last season. Overall, the 6-foot-4 pitcher from Charlotte, North Carolina, went 77-68 with a 3.78 ERA over 278 games split between five teams, including two stints with the Dodgers. He played collegiately at Georgia, was selected in the second round of the 2012 draft by the Braves and made his major league debut with Atlanta a year later. Wood's best season came in 2017 when he went 16-3 with a 2.72 ERA in 27 games for the Dodgers. After spending 2019 in Cincinnati, he returned to Los Angeles and pitched four scoreless innings during the Dodgers' six-game World Series win over Tampa Bay. He also spent three seasons with the San Francisco Giants. "Playing for five iconic franchises and becoming part of those communities is something my family and I will always cherish," Wood wrote. He then closed his message by writing: "Cheers to what's next. See you at the park! Love, Woody." ___ AP MLB:https://apnews.com/hub/mlb

The coach of 2022 Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina has been cleared by the WTA Tour to returnfrom his suspensionfor a potential breach of its code of conduct. Stefano Vukov was provisionally suspended in January while the tour conducted an investigation. It announced in February that had been completed and that the banremained in place, without saying how long it would last. The organization said Friday that Vukov would again be permitted to receive credentials allowing him access to player areas and practice courts at its events. "The WTA is fully committed to providing a safe and respectful environment for all athletes and other participants, as set out in our WTA Code of Conduct and Safeguarding Code," the tour said in a statement. "Any sanctions issued following a breach of these safeguarding rules are carefully considered and are subject to appeal before an independent tribunal. While case details remain confidential, we can confirm that Mr. Vukov is eligible to receive credentials at WTA events." The New York Times first reported that Vukov's ban had been lifted. Rybakina announced before last year's U.S. Open that Vukov would no longer be her coach, but then said before the Australian Open that he would be rejoining her team. She insisted that he had never mistreated her during their time working together. Rybakina, ranked No. 10 on the WTA Tour, just reached the semifinals of the National Bank Open in Montreal before losing to Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko, the eventual champion. ___ AP tennis:https://apnews.com/hub/tennis

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — Tom Brady's statue weighs six tons and rises 17 feet off the ground, from the bottom of the six-sided base — one for each of the New England Patriots' Super Bowl victories — to the tip of the bronze fist raised in celebration. For a player who was too slow and immobile coming out of college to merit more than a No. 199 draft pick, that seems just about right. "When I was drafted, I just hoped to make the team. I never dreamed I'll be standing here two and a half decades later, made of bronze and frozen in time," Brady said Friday night at a ceremony to unveil the statue before the Patriots' exhibition opener against the Washington Commanders. "But actually, it actually feels pretty appropriate given my 40-yard dash time." A three-time NFL Most Valuable Player, five-time Super Bowl MVP and seven-time NFL champion — he won one after defecting to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers —Brady retired in 2023as the league's most-decorated player ever, holding records in dozens of categories that include most wins, yards passing, and passing touchdowns — for both the regular season and playoffs. The Patriotsinducted him into their Hall of Famelast year, waiving the usual four-year waiting period, and retired his No. 12. At the ceremony, owner Robert Kraft said Brady would be the first player in franchise history to have a bronze statue outside the stadium. The work by sculptor lifelong Patriots fan Jeff Buccacio unveiled Friday on the plaza outside the team's Pro Shop and Hall of Fame features a hexagonal granite base and a 12-foot Brady, honoring Brady's uniform number and making good on Kraft's wish for it to be larger than life. It is 17 feet in all, representing the 17 AFC East titles the Patriots won in Brady's 19 seasons. In his remarks, Brady pretended to be interrupted by a call from former coach Bill Belichick giving his opinion of the statue. "He said there's still room for improvement," Brady said. "I know that feeling." Fans crowded the plaza, lined a nearby stairway and leaned over railings inside the stadium to watch the ceremony, interrupting Brady by chanting his name. Among those at the ceremony were Brady's parents and children, current coach Mike Vrabel and former teammates Devin and Jason McCourty, David Andrews, Wes Welker and Brian Hoyer. Several members of the Commanders entourage also came by, including general manager Adam Peters and ex-Patriot and current Washington defensive end Deatrich Wise. "It was always important for me to be out there," Vrabel said afterthe 48-18 victory over the Commanders. "Having somebody like that be part of this organization is pretty unique and pretty special. Glad I could be part of it a little bit." In addition to the self-deprecating comments and the shot at Belichick, Brady said he didn't think a statue was appropriate until he was "really old," like Vrabel. But he saved his best for the rival New York Jets. "This statue isn't just for Pats fans. It'll also give all the Jets fans something to throw their beers at as they leave the stadium every year," Brady said. "Probably in the second quarter." ___ AP NFL:https://apnews.com/hub/NFL

LAS VEGAS (AP) — A'ja Wilson had 29 points and 12 rebounds on her 29th birthday, Jackie Young added 26 points, including a key 3-pointer with 51 seconds left, and the Las Vegas Aces beat the Seattle Storm 90-86 on Friday night for their fifth win in six games. Young scored seven straight points at the end of an 9-0 run to give Las Vegas a 63-44 lead midway through the third quarter. Seattle closed the third on a 17-6 run — with all six Las Vegas points from Jewell Loyd. The Storm also scored the opening seven points of the fourth to get to 71-70. Dominique Malonga completed a three-point play with 5:38 left to tie it at 75 — the closest Seattle had been since it was tied at 25. But Young scored the next five points. Young's late 3-pointer made it 90-84. Chelsea Gray added 13 points and NaLyssa Smith had 10 points and 11 rebounds for Las Vegas (17-14). Loyd finished with 10 points against her former team. Young's second basket in the first half moved her past Becky Hammon for fifth in franchise history for most made field goals. Malonga has season highs with 22 points and 12 rebounds for Seattle (16-15). Erica Wheeler added 16 points, Gabby Williams scored 14 and Nneka Ogwumike had 12 points and nine rebounds. Brittney Sykes, in her first game with Seattle after coming over from the Mystics, scored 14 points off the bench. The Aces announced it was their 40th straight sold-out game — the most in WNBA history. ___ AP WNBA:https://apnews.com/wnba

With two outs, the Yankees had a chance to escape the inning down by only one run. However, Williams then left an 82.1 mph changeup out over the plate that Trammell launched into the right-center field seats to give the Astros a 5-2 lead. No defending that one. Following the game, Boone was asked why he didn't keep Weaver in the game to pitch the 10th, as the Astros did with Hader. He said Weaver walkingJesús Sánchezon a seven-pitch at-bat to extend the ninth essentially took that option away. "I feel like we've gotten Weave in such a good spot now. "When you go a five-inning outing, you gotta be able to finish it off with the guys, just because somebody's struggling," he added. "I wasn't going to go once he lost Sánchez and the inning extended. Clayton Kershaw, Max Scherzer turn back the clock in rematch from fabled rookie clashNew Foto - Clayton Kershaw, Max Scherzer turn back the clock in rematch from fabled rookie clash

Clayton Kershaw and Max Scherzer were selected four picks apart in the 2006 MLB Draft, have both won three Cy Young Awards and are still adding to their Hall of Fame résumés, with their latest chapters coming in the same game Friday. The Los Angeles Dodgers and Toronto Blue Jays veterans started against each other for the fifth time of their 19-year professional careers. As many have noted recently, their first clash came Sept. 7, 2008, when they were both late additions after two other future Hall of Famers — Randy Johnson and Greg Maddux — were both scratched. It was the first time in MLB history two pitchers started against each other as rookies and went on to accumulate at least 3,000 strikeouts each, per MLB.com's Sarah Langs. On Friday, it was Kershaw who got the better of Scherzer in a battle of first-place teams. Both pitchers threw six innings each, but Kershaw allowed one run fewer ina 5-1 Dodgers win. The decisive hit came in the fifth inning off Scherzer, from another Hall of Famer in Mookie Betts. The former MVP broke his recent slump with a two-run homer, his first long ball since July 7. Kershaw getting the win ties him with his former Dodgers teammate at 218 career wins. The start also saw him strike out Vladimir Guerrero Jr., which is notable because Kershaw faced Guerrero's father Vladimir Sr. when he was 21 years old. The other three: • Sept. 6, 2023: Scherzer vs. Justin Verlander• Sept. 16, 2007: Curt Schilling vs. Roger Clemens• July 19, 2006: Greg Maddux vs. Clemens Neither pitcher has performed to their previous Cy Young standards this year, which isn't exactly a surprise when Scherzer is 41 years old and Kershaw is 37. Scherzer holds a 4.21 ERA this season, on pace for his worst mark since 2011 when he was still figuring things out with the Detroit Tigers. Kershaw has remained effective when healthy with a 3.14 ERA, but it's also been six years since he pitched 140 innings in a season. When they're facing each other, it doesn't really matter. Fans in attendance will be able to say they saw a game between Clayton Kershaw and Max Scherzer, and it's that kind of memory on which baseball is built. It's why fans were eagerly awaiting that Johnson-Maddux matchup 17 years ago, then got something even more interesting.

Lions-Falcons game halted after Morice Norris Jr. removed in ambulanceNew Foto - Lions-Falcons game halted after Morice Norris Jr. removed in ambulance

The preseason game between the Detroit Lions and host Atlanta Falcons on Friday night was suspended in the fourth quarter after Lions safety Morice Norris Jr. was taken off the field in an ambulance following a hit to the head. Later Friday, the Lions released a statement regarding Norris' condition: "Morice Norris is in stable condition and has feeling and movement in all his extremities. He will remain at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta overnight for observation. We would like to thank the Atlanta Falcons organization, the EMS team at Mercedes-Benz Stadium and the doctors and staff at Grady for their support." On the first play of the fourth quarter, Falcons running Nathan Carter took a handoff and got into the Detroit secondary. As Norris went in for the tackle, Carter's right knee hit Norris in the head. The second-year player immediately went to the turf and Lions trainers ran into the field. After being tended to, Norris was put in an ambulance and taken to an area hospital. After the game, Lions coach Dan Campbell said, "It's just an eye-opener. It hits, you know? It hits a little different. It puts things in perspective. "I'll tell you what -- man, it's a violent game, and we love it. But when something like this happens, the silver lining is the brotherhood. To see all those guys from that team, (and) our team, kind of come together and everybody is thinking about another player, it just means a lot." On the ensuing play after Norris' injury, Falcons quarterback Emory Jones took the snap and then walked to the middle of the field, where players from both teams formed a circle and prayed. The clock continued running with no more plays run, and more than eight minutes later, officials called the game. The Lions won the game 17-10. Campbell and Falcons coach Raheem Morris jointly decided the game shouldn't continue. "You look in (the players') eyes, and you saw it, and you get an opportunity to address the team and talk about your prayers and your thoughts for Mo and his family," Morris said of what he told the squad. "And you talk about (the players) and their families and their well-being and all the things that we've been a part of together. It was pretty simple to talk about those things with those guys." Detroit quarterback Kyle Allen said, "It's never good when they bring out the stretchers. We just started praying for him and hoping for the best. "When it's taking that long, with that many people and that many trainers around him, you're just hoping for the best." Norris, 24, appeared in two games for the Lions last year after signing as an undrafted free agent. He was in on one play on defense and 32 plays on special teams. He played two seasons at Fresno State (2022-23) after spending two seasons in junior college. Norris had 116 tackles, two interceptions, two forced fumbles and 17.5 tackles for loss with the Bulldogs. --Field Level Media

Shedeur Sanders has Browns edging into real QB drama after solid exhibition showing vs. PanthersNew Foto - Shedeur Sanders has Browns edging into real QB drama after solid exhibition showing vs. Panthers

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Entering Friday night, Shedeur Sanders' NFL world orbited multiple qualifiers. Ifthe rookie quarterback could master NFL play-calling and verbiage …ifhe could learn head coach Kevin Stefanski's offense and maximize minimal practice reps …ifhe secured exhibition opportunities and showed a spark … thenmaybethere would be a reason to make him a serious part of the Cleveland Browns' quarterback conversation. Exiting Friday night, Sanders went ahead and started that dialogue. Whether the Browns are ready for it or not. [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] This is what Sanders' first meaningful NFL incursion has generated. Get beyond the symphony ofsocial media applause from celebrities(LeBron James, Jamie Foxx, etc.), former NFL players (Richard Sherman, Gerald McCoy, etc.), and too many NFL analysts to count. Tuck all of that away and consider this: For months, the spotlight on Sanders has washed out virtually every other storyline in the organization — and that wasbeforethere was something consequential to digest. Now he's actually played some relevant football. And the outcome was solidly impressive for exhibition work, even from the most conservative of vantages: 14-of-23 passing for 138 yards and two touchdown passes, with two sacks and zero turnovers in nearly three quarters against the Carolina Panthers. But the true gravity of the performance was more in how Sanders held up after being tapped to start Cleveland's first exhibition game, despite getting very few high level practice snaps since the start of training camp. After a series where he looked like a quarterback treading water in his first NFL opportunity, he settled into a comfort zone that was intriguing if not impressive. And he did it rotating through a tide of situational challenges that should be useful when the Browns sit down to digest the game tape. He threw from the shotgun repeatedly, but also tucked under center a handful of times. He played snaps in the red zone with scoring opportunities, as well as backed up to Cleveland's own goal line and throwing out of his own end zone. He was faced with third-and-long, third-and-short, and at one point, even executed a quarterback sneak for a first down. And on a few occasions, he was forced to evade the rush inside the pocket or to move outside and operate off script. Not sure the#Brownscould have scripted a better look at Shedeur Sanders in terms of situations. Threw from the end zone, threw in X-and-long, took snaps under center, red zone looks, some plays out of sctructure. They've gotten to see a nice little package already. — Charles Robinson (@CharlesRobinson)August 9, 2025 In one game, he packed in a multitude of scenarios that should have the coaching staff and front office feeling good about what it can digest as it heads into next week. But it also now pours jet fuel onto an external fire the Browns have been trying to tamp down for weeks, if not months. And that is this: If Sanders takes sparing opportunities and excels in those moments, how can henotbecome a legitimate part of a larger quarterback conversation? A little over four weeks ago, I spoke to a high-ranking executive inside the franchise and they offered this line amid an assessment of Sanders' potentially moving up the team's depth chart: "How he plays in preseason games won't be ignored." If that sentiment still rings true, then Sanders' performance against the Panthers can't simply be written off as exhibition snaps against exhibition quality players, especially when the snaps come on the heels of Sanders effectively being forced into three quarters of work after fellow backup quarterbacks Kenny Pickett and Dillon Gabriel suffered injuries that took them off the table for Friday night. Yet, after this performance, you could still feel Stefanski redirecting the conversation about Sanders. Nearly every postgame question had something to do with his rookie quarterback's performance — asking how Stefanski rated it, what it meant for Sanders' future, how the quarterback slotting might be impacted … on and on. For the most part, the Browns head coach was gently complimentary, often choosing to steer many of his answers to the overall team by using phrases like "the guys" and "the players." It wasn't a ham-handed attempt to keep from focusing solely on Sanders, but it wasn't exactly subtle, either. And within it, you could feel a continued effort to put the screws down on a wider quarterback conversation. "We're really just focused on developing our players," Stefanski said at one point, when asked specifically about a potential impact to the quarterback depth chart. "We're in evaluation mode. I'm pleased with where the guys are, but I'm not diving into the quarterback competition." The one thing Stefanski did allow? Sanders' preseason opportunity is going to extend to next week's game against the Philadelphia Eagles. "He'll get a ton of reps next week as well," Stefanski said. "That's all a part of our development of our young players." For Sanders' part, he remained diplomatic and focused inward — which has been his base line attitude from the moment Cleveland's training camp began. "I just think about when I get out there just doing what I gotta do," Sanders said. "Everything else is out of my hands, so why worry about it? I just don't think that deep into everything because it's something that you're not able to control. So why put energy into something you can't control? The most you could do is whenever you get your opportunity and your number is called, is perform and at least do the bare minimum and win the game. That's what I feel like we did today and there's definitely things that I could grow off of." At the very least, it's an approach based in reality. Two months ago, when the Browns were heading into their full squad minicamp, it was clear Sanders was only going to be able to control the opportunities the Cleveland staff offered to him. And at the time, it didn't sound like there would be a landslide of chances to make a difference. There was a strong insinuation that he should be viewed as nothing more than fourth-string quarterback who had a short list of things that needed to focus on. He needed to learn Stefanski's scheme and take advantage of whatever reps were provided — even if they were few and far between. He had to master NFL terminology and play-calling verbiage and treat it like a first language. And above all, if the time came and he was given opportunities in preseason games, he had to make the very most out of every single snap. On Friday night, he did that. And come Saturday morning, the quarterback conversation in Cleveland will have just gotten started.

Shedeur Sanders shined vs. Panthers. Will performance shake up Browns' QB depth chart?New Foto - Shedeur Sanders shined vs. Panthers. Will performance shake up Browns' QB depth chart?

CHARLOTTE, NC – So much for the narrative thatShedeur Sanderswas set up to fail. No, there's another way to look at this after thefifth-round rookie quarterback essentially aced his testfor theCleveland Brownsin their preseason opener on Friday night. Sanders was hardly perfect while handling a heavy workload in the30-10 exhibition winagainst theCarolina Panthers. Butboy was he good. Sanders, 23, threw two touchdown passes to Kaden Davis that looked as if they were guided by laser. He had a few Harry Houdini moments, escaping at least four would-be sacks. He flowed off-script, like on a 30-yard completion that fellow rookie Luke Floriea hauled in with one hand. And he never committed a turnover. Yet afterward, Sanders (14-of-23, 138 yards, 106.8 passer rating) bemoaned missing on a couple throws that got away. "Did I play up to par?" he said. "No, I don't think I did." Well, he's entitled to his opinion, too. So, just imagine what Sanders, listed as fourth-string on the depth chart, might have done if he had worked some practice reps with the starters or the second team. Sanders has yet to have a single rep with the first team during training camp, and has had only a handful with the 2's. He's the guy seen during practices working alone on an adjacent field. With Kenny Pickett and rookie Dillon Gabriel, listed behind Joe Flacco, nursing hamstring injuries, Sanders got his chance to start and shine. Some suggested he was set up to fail because of his limited practice reps. Sanders, though, has a totally different view. "I think overall in life, I don't want anybody to make excuses," said Sanders, who led college football in completion percentage in his final year playing for his Hall of Fame father, Deion, at Colorado in 2024 – then dominated the news cycle during the three-day NFL draft as his stock tumbled from a projected first-round pick to a Day 3 selection. Set up to fail? "You ask God for something. It's there," he said. "And you're going to complain about it? So, it's two ways you can look at it. You can look at it and be thankful and take full advantage of the opportunity. Or you can look at it like 'Dang. This is what I've been asking for, but I'm not prepared.' I've been able to sleep at night, knowing I was going to be playing. And then I just prepared as normal. Then that switch kicked in. When you're out there on the field, it feels different. Ball's ball. Ball has never been a problem for me." Shedeur Sanders debut winners, losers:How Browns QB's performance impacts team Sanders may have just played himself intoa serious contender for the Browns' starting job. After all, Browns coach Kevin Stefanski has maintained that it's an "open" competition. And if that's the case, Sanders, who played 45 snaps on nine series (excluding a kneel-down at the end of the first half), has at least earned the chance to get reps with the 1's and 2's. Stefanski evaded that question when I asked during his postgame news conference and also wouldn't touch the topic of the competition. The rookie wouldn't light a match, either. Sanders: "I just think about when I got out there, doing what I've got to do. Everything else is not in my hand, so why worry about it? I just don't think that deep into everything because it's nothing you're going to be able to control. Why put energy into something that you can't control? The most you can do is hey, man, if you get your opportunity and your number's called, perform it. At least to the bare minimum to win the game." There's fresh videotape out there now, however, showing Sanders making splash plays like he did at Colorado and demonstrating keen instincts during his big audition. It's a starting point. Never mind that the Browns didn't play starters and Carolina played first-teamers for only a couple series. As LeBron James so eloquently put itin a post on X, Sanders' performance shouldn't be discounted because he didn't play with or much against starters. Ah, social media. Sanders was such a trending topic on Friday night, just as he was during the NFL draft. His famous father, aka Coach Prime, didn't hesitate to put out a postamid the buzz. "What now?" Deion asked on X. Stefanski and his staff – including Bill Musgrave, the Browns quarterbacks coach who was a teammate of Deion's on the San Francisco 49ers squad that won Super Bowl 29 – can assess so many layers of Sanders' performance. If you wanted to script a test to cover all of the bases, the Browns couldn't have done much better than compiling the "situational football" scenarios from Friday night. Sanders operated in a nine-play drive and a two-play drive. On another possession, he faced back-to-back third-and-long plays, converting the first one after he rolled out and bolted from the pocket for a 9-yard run. Another time he powered under the pile to convert a quarterback sneak. Both of his TD passes came while positioned in the red zone. Another series had him backed up deep in his own end, then throwing from the end zone. At the end of the half, a hurry-up drill. Said Stefanski: "The situations were invaluable for Shedeur, for all of our offense." Then there's this other situation, reflecting uncharted territory for Sanders. Someone asked about his patience, given the scant opportunities while buried on the depth chart. "It's different things and different life lessons you've got to go through," he said. "And I haven't gone through this situation that I'm in, ever. So, it's really just a test from God. I was just thankful that I was able to see the light of day and get out there and play." Still, it's so striking that he produced so much from so few practice reps. "I'm comfortable with being uncomfortable," he declared. "That's what it is. I've got pockets of finding my rhythm. I've got to get into that quicker, regardless of anything. But overall, I felt like me out there. "I couldn't do it without the time, I couldn't do it without the play-calling," he added. "So, I'm just thankful to have the joy of just being on the field overall. And carrying the responsibility to do the right thing. So, that's two badges under my belt already." And with that, Sanders re-wrote the narrative. "My vow is to definitely make change," he said. "And change was made." Which adds some major intrigue to the Browns' quarterback situation. SAN DIEGO (AP) — Wilyer Abreu made former teammate Nick Pivetta pay for his mistakes with a two-run home run in a four-run fourth inning and Masataka Yoshida also connected to help the Boston Red Sox beat the San Diego Padres 10-2 on Friday night. Connor Wong added a bases-loaded double and Walker Buehler (7-6) shut out the Padres on four singles through six innings as the Red Sox won for the 10th time in 12 games. Buehler struck out four and walked two, with only two Padres reaching scoring position. Buehler improved to 7-1 against the Padres and 2-1 at Petco Park. His previous 12 starts against San Diego all came while with the NL West-rival Los Angeles Dodgers. Buehler, who earned the save in the Dodgers' World Series-ending Game 5 victory over the Yankees, signed with the Red Sox as a free agent Dec. 28. Pivetta (11-4) loaded the bases opening the fourth by allowing a single to Alex Bregman and walking Jarren Duran and Trevor Story. Yoshida hit a sacrifice fly and Pivetta's errant throw trying to pick off Story brought in another run. With two outs, Abreu hit a 423-foot homer to right-center, his 21st, to make it 4-0. Bregman hit a sac fly in the fifth. Pivetta allowed five runs and five hits in six innings, struck out three and walked three. Wong's three-run double off Sean Reynolds made it 8-0 in the eighth. The Padres scored twice in the bottom of the inning. Yoshida hit a two-run homer in the ninth off Reynolds, his second. Key moment Abreu's homer to one of the deepest parts of Petco Park. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Clayton Kershaw outpitched Max Scherzer ina matchup for the ages, and Mookie Betts homered and drove in three runs to lead the Los Angeles Dodgers past the Toronto Blue Jays 5-1 on Friday night. In a rare duel between the latest members to join the 3,000-strikeout club, Kershaw and Scherzer both threw six effective innings. The 37-year-old Kershaw (6-2) allowed one run and seven hits, striking out four. The 41-year-old Scherzer (2-2) gave up two runs and six hits. He struck out five and walked three. Both longtime aces have won three Cy Young Awards and are likely headed to the Hall of Fame. Betts gave the Dodgers a 2-1 lead with a two-run homer off Scherzer in the fifth. With two outs, Shohei Ohtani hit a ground-rule double. Betts followed with a 389-foot shot to left field for his first homer since July 5. Los Angeles tacked on three runs in the seventh. Betts knocked in the first one with a grounder, and Ohtani scored when reliever Louis Varland issued a bases-loaded walk to Will Smith. Teoscar Hernández added a sacrifice fly that plated Betts. Ohtani finished with three hits and scored twice. Daulton Varsho had three hits for the Blue Jays, who took a 1-0 lead on Addison Barger's two-strike RBI single off Kershaw in the second. Toronto's three-game winning streak was snapped in the matchup of division leaders. Key moment Betts grounded into a fielder's choice to shortstop in the seventh. Bo Bichette threw home and Alex Freeland slid on his side and onto his back with his right hand reaching for the plate. Toronto catcher Alejandro Kirk applied the tag to the back of Freeland's legs as they came up in the air. The Blue Jays lost their replay challenge and the Dodgers took a 3-1 lead. Key stat Kershaw and Scherzer went toe-to-toe for six innings in front of a sellout crowd of 53,825. SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Rafael Devers and Casey Schmitt homered, and the San Francisco Giants beat the Washington Nationals 5-0 on Friday night to snap their longest home losing streak in more than a decade. Matt Chapman had two hits and an RBI for the Giants. Dominic Smith added two singles to extend his hitting streak to 12 games. Kai-Wei Teng (1-1) pitched five smooth innings in relief for his first major league win. The 26-year-old from Taiwan followed opener Matt Gage and allowed three hits with one walk with four strikeouts. Joey Lucchesi, José Buttó and Tristan Beck each retired three batters to complete the four-hitter. The Giants had lost eight straight at Oracle Park — one shy of their longest home skid of the San Francisco era — before beating the Nationals for the third time in four meetings this season. Devers, acquired from Boston in June, launched his 21st home run of the season off Jake Irvin (8-7) in the first. Chapman's RBI single later in the inning made it 2-0. Schmitt's homer, a two-run drive in the sixth, was his second in six days. San Francisco added a run in the eighth on Patrick Bailey's infield single. Irvin allowed eight hits and four runs (three earned) in 5 1/3 innings. Key moment After the Nationals loaded the bases with no outs in the fifth, Devers fielded a grounder to first base and threw out Josh Bell at home plate before the next batter, Jacob Young, grounded into a double play. Key stat Teng threw 64 pitches in five innings and allowed only two runners past second base. Up next Giants top pitching prospect Carson Whisenhunt (1-0, 4.35 ERA) faces Nationals right-hander Brad Lord (2-6, 3.42) on Saturday. ___ AP MLB:https://apnews.com/hub/MLB

The anticipated preseason matchup between theCleveland BrownsandCarolina Panthersgot chippy early on Friday night. The two were tangled up after the play before Legette, a second-year pro, threw a few punches at Jenkins. Jenkins, a nine-year veteran, then proceeded to grab Legette's helmet while the receiver tried to tackle him. As Legette went to the ground, Jenkins was able to rip off his helmet. Jenkins, who is battling for a backup safety role in Cleveland was replaced by fellow veteranDamontae Kazee. Meanwhile, Legette's exit gave fellow second-year wide-outJalen Cokermore time to play withBryce Young. Another sex toy interrupts final seconds of WNBA game, as commissioner Cathy Engelbert denounces 'totally unacceptable' trendNew Foto - Another sex toy interrupts final seconds of WNBA game, as commissioner Cathy Engelbert denounces 'totally unacceptable' trend

Yet another sex toy was thrown onto a WNBA court, this time in the closing seconds of the Atlanta Dream's 86-65 win over the Chicago Sky. With just under six seconds remaining at the Wintrust Arena in Chicago on Thursday, play was momentarily stopped after a purple toy was thrown from the stands – the fourth in growing lists of recent copycat incidents. According toFront Office Sports reporter Colin Salao, a second sex toy was thrown on Thursday but only made it behind the Dream's bench. Two people were questioned by security shortly after the incident, according to Salao, but were let go as there was no evidence they were responsible. CNN Sportshas also reached out to the WNBA, the Chicago Sky and the Atlanta Dream for comment. Earlier this week, the WNBA said any fan caught throwing sex toys onto the court will face prosecution as well as a ban from the league. WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert has also denounced the trend, calling it "unacceptable." "I'm almost in my 40th year in business and unfortunately we get these kinds of acts and it's totally unacceptable," Engelbertsaid to Sportico Sports Business, before the latest incident on Thursday. "These people are trading whatever notoriety they're getting for a felony conviction. So, we have caught two of the guys and they're being charged with felonies and it doesn't make any sense to me for whatever their little joy ride is." She added: "Hopefully, it just ends with the fact that, if you want a felony conviction on your record, go ahead and do it. But obviously it can be very dangerous to throw anything, let alone what they are throwing." It is the second time a Sky game was interrupted by an incident. Last Friday, a sex toy was thrown from the stands during the team's game against the Golden State Valkyries. The toy landed just out of bounds underneath one of the baskets. Earlier on Thursday, Minnesota Lynx head coach Cheryl Reeve called the growing number of incidents a "distraction." "This has been going on for centuries," Reeve told reporters. "The sexualization of women. This is the latest version of that. And it's not funny and it should not be the butt of jokes on radio shows, or in print or any comments. "The sexualization of women is what's used to hold women down and this is no different. This is its latest form and we should write about it in that way. These people that are doing this should be held accountable and we're not the butt of the joke. They're the problem." Thursday's incident also comes two days after a green toy was thrown in the direction of Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham during the team's game against the Los Angeles Sparks at the Crypto.com Arena. The 28-year-old Cunningham hadpreviously askedpeople to stop throwing such objects earlier this week on social media but appeared to be struck on the leg by the toy during Tuesday's game. "this did NOT age well," shewroteon X after the game, replying to her own previous post calling for spectators to stop throwing sex toys on the court. She also had posted a message on her Instagram Stories, saying: "No way that thing actually hit me. I knew I shouldn't have tweeted that." The Valkyries and Dream were also subject to an incident at Gateway Center Arena in College Park, Georgia last week. The individual involved in the incident in Atlanta was identified and arrested, according to the WNBA. They are reportedly charged with disorderly conduct, public indecency/indecent exposure, and criminal trespass, according toReuters, with a court date yet to be established. According to social media posts seen by theAssociated Press, green toys were also previously thrown in Phoenix and New York, but didn't reach the court. On Thursday, a group of cryptocurrency meme coin creators claimed responsibility for some of the incidents. In aninterview with USA Today, a spokesperson for the group said members had started throwing the green items to coincide with the launch of a new meme coin, the name of which is a play on a type of sex toy. The spokesperson told the outlet the new coin was in protest of the current state of the crypto market, and the group said they were "viral stunts" to gain attention for the coin, rejecting the narrative that the incidents were disrespectful towards women's athletes. "We didn't do this because like we dislike women's sports or, like, some of the narratives that are trending right now are ridiculous," the spokesperson said. "Creating disruption at games is like, it happens in every single sport, right? We've seen it in the NFL, we've seen it in hockey, you know … fans doing random things to more or less create attention." For more CNN news and newsletters create an account atCNN.com

In 2023, similar to this most recent procedure, Self underwent a catheterization andhad two stents put in to treat blocked arteries. He missed the Big 12 tournament and NCAA tournament as a result of the procedure. Selfreturned to the program April 5, 2023, saying that he had missed the team and that he had taken the incident as a wake-up call in terms of improving his health. Self has been the head coach of the Jayhawks since 2003, leading the team to two NCAA championships and holding a 624-156 overall record across 22 seasons. The retired WNBA player and her soccer star fiancée recently went viral for their hilarious recreation of theheadline-making "kiss cam" controversythat happened at a Coldplay concert in early July. While attending the Minnesota Lynx and Seattle Storm game in Seattle on Tuesday, Aug. 5, the cameras caught Bird affectionately dancing with someone other than Rapinoe: Doppler, the Storm's mascot! Steph Chambers/Getty Images In a clip that's since gone viral, Rapinoe is pictured seated courtside during a break in the basketball game's action. Then, the cameras turn to Bird in the rafters swaying side to side with red, furry mascot. Like Astronomer CEO Andy Byron and the company's HR executive Kristin Cabot who unexpectedly got caught at Gillette Stadium, Bird and Doppler reacted with immediate embarrassment on the big screen. They jokingly ducked down and covered their faces, trying to hide. The camera then cut back to Rapinoe, who pretended to look on in shock as she took in Bird's performance on the screen up above. As a result, the crowd erupted in cheers and laughter. The retired athletes announced their engagement to one another in October 2020. In August 2024, they relaunched their podcast,A Touch More with Sue Bird & Megan Rapinoe. NL MVP watch: As Shohei Ohtani and Kyle Schwarber begin 2-month sprint for top honors, who has the edge?New Foto - NL MVP watch: As Shohei Ohtani and Kyle Schwarber begin 2-month sprint for top honors, who has the edge?

Nearly 70% of the MLB calendar has passed as we've moved past the All-Star Game and thetrade deadline. The 162-game marathon is now a two-month sprint to October. In that sprint to the postseason, there are storylines thatreallybegin to take shape in August. They often include races for major awards as frontrunners pull away from the pack or dark horses emerge from the shadows. Historically, August is pivotal in determining those awards. In 2016, Angels superstar Mike Trout hit .349 in August, the highest average of any month that season, leading to his second of three AL MVP awards. During August of his 2017 NL MVP campaign, Giancarlo Stanton carried a 1.332 OPS and mashed 18 home runs, placing him firmly in the driver's seat on his way to an MVP award. [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] Most recently, a strong August put Padres center fielder Jackson Merrill into a legitimate race with Pirates ace Paul Skenes for the NL Rookie of the Year Award. While Skenes ultimately won the award, Merrill's hot month helped propel him to a runner-up finish in balloting. This year, there are multiple awards that will come down to the wire. The most compelling might be the race for NL MVP. Shohei Ohtani, the game's best player, has again been the front-runner for NL MVP all season. The Dodgers' unicorn has an NL-leading .987 OPS entering Friday with 39 homers. He's also returned to the mound in dominant fashion with a 2.37 ERA in eight starts, although in short stints as he builds up from elbow surgery. The Cubs' electric Pete Crow-Armstrong was once a strong candidate for NL MVP, but he and Chicago's recent struggles have quieted that talk. But former Cub and current Phillies slugger Kyle Schwarber has pushed himself into the conversation with Ohtani for NL MVP. Schwarber has been consistent and productive for Philadelphia throughout this season, ranking second in the NL with a .965 OPS entering Friday and leading the NL with 40 homers. And even during times when the Phillies' offense struggled, Schwarber carried them, including when superstar Bryce Harper was out of the lineup for three weeks with a wrist injury. The Phillies' DH is having his best season of his career and is on pace to set career-highs in nearly every offensive category including hits, home runs, RBI, OPS and stolen bases. One of the biggest questions about the NL MVP race: In any season when Ohtani is healthy and he's hitting at an elite levelandpitching, is there anything a player can do outside of a historic season that would wrestle MVP awards away from him? While Ohtani has swung the bat well and is turning into an ace again on the mound, the Dodgers haven't played their best baseball despite their unicorn's individual success. But Schwarber and the Phillies have taken off, and after being in the NL wild-card race, they are now firmly entrenched atop the NL East. And with Schwarber's impact in the middle of their lineup, is that enough to overtake Ohtani? While the AL MVP race is also compelling with front-runners Aaron Judge and Cal Raleigh still leading the pack, the combination of Judge's recent stint on the IL and Raleigh's cold stretch since the All-Star break is likely leading to a photo finish in September. The NL Cy Young Award is starting to look like Skenes' to lose. The 2024 NL Rookie of the Year has pitched to even better levels than he did last season when he had a 1.96 ERA in 23 starts. This season, Skenes has a 1.94 ERA in 24 starts. The Phillies' duo of Cristopher Sánchez and Zack Wheeler could find a way to upend Skenes, but it will be tough with the Pirates' right-hander dominating at this level. And with Pittsburgh having no plans to shut him down, he'll have the body of work to go along with the production.

The schedule for the 2025-2026 NBA season is starting to take shape, as early pieces of the slate are making their way out. For opening night on Oct. 21, the NBA will tip off the season with two games on NBC, perESPN's Shams Charania. The night will include the Houston Rockets visiting the Oklahoma City Thunder and the Golden State Warriors traveling to the Los Angeles Lakers. [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] The first matchup has the defending NBA champs hosting the Rockets, who finished second in the West last season. The second could pit two league heavyweights, Warriors guard Stephen Curry and Lakers forward LeBron James, against each other to start the season (though James' future with the Lakersis currently a little uncertain). Either way, it opens the season with the league's triumphant return to NBC, asthe network hosts NBA gamesfor the first time in more than two decades. 🚨🚨🚨Opening Night of the 2025-26 NBA season on NBC on Oct. 21, per sources:- Houston Rockets at Oklahoma City Thunder- Golden State Warriors at Los Angeles Lakers — Shams Charania (@ShamsCharania)August 8, 2025 In addition to opening night, Charania hasoffered up a reporton the NBA's Christmas Day slate. Those matchups are: Cleveland Cavaliers at New York Knicks San Antonio Spurs at Oklahoma City Thunder Rockets at Lakers Dallas Mavericks at Warriors Minnesota Timberwolves at Denver Nuggets Four of the five matchups will be between Western Conference teams, with only Cavs-Knicks representing the East. Additionally, the Lakers and Warriors will be the only teams featured on both signature days. For decades, Christmas was a signature part of the NBA season, with the league holding games on the holiday since the 1940s. But the NFL has recently started to encroach on the NBA by hosting Christmas games of its own, in a direct connection to the league's success on Thanksgiving. Last season, the NBA had its most-watched Christmas Day in five years, with 5.25 million viewers across the five games on ABC and ESPN, an 84% viewership jump from the previous year. That number falls well short of the NFL, which had 65 million total viewers on Netflix for two games, averaging 24 million viewers. In January, LeBron James admitted on the Kelce brothers' "New Heights" podcastthat the NFL "kicked our ass"last Christmas "from a viewership standpoint." Part of that was the added entertainment, as Beyoncé's halftime show drew some of that viewership. But overall, the NFL trounced the NBA last Christmas, marking a troubling trend for the NBA's future on the holiday. This year's Christmas schedule for the NFL includes three games: Dallas Cowboys-Washington Commanders, Detroit Lions-Minnesota Vikings and Denver Broncos-Kansas City Chiefs. The slate will feature three division rivalries, some big names, and overall some big viewership draws. The 2025 NBA slate doesn't offer the punchiest matchups from the league. Despite some hopes that the league would feature a Lakers-Mavericks game — a.k.a., a Luka Dončić homecoming — on either opening night or Christmas, that doesn't seem to be the case this season. The games offer up some star power, and Cavs-Knicks offers up a big-name, standings-relevant matchup (at least based on last season's results). Overall, the holiday lineup is missing a little bit of oomph — though, of course, a lot can happen before Dec. 25 to change that.

2025 ACC betting preview, odds: Favorite over/unders, Heisman pick and projections for every teamNew Foto - 2025 ACC betting preview, odds: Favorite over/unders, Heisman pick and projections for every team

For over a decade, the Atlantic Coast Conference has had one simple rule: beat Clemson or get out of the way. The Tigers have won eight of the last 10 ACC titles, and even in their so-called "down years," they've remained the team to beat. Last season, they reasserted their dominance through what was seen as one of the easier schedules in that 10-year run and snagged the final spot in the first 12-team College Football Playoff, leapfrogging Alabama in the process. Now, with more returning production than any other Power 4 team, Clemson enters 2025 as a clear favorite (-110 atBetMGM) to make it nine conference titles in 11 years. Quarterback Cade Klubnik returns for what could be his breakout season, the defense retools under new coordinator Tom Allen and head coach Dabo Swinney — after years of portal resistance — has finally embraced modern roster-building. But if Clemson slips, the door is wide open. Miami believes it's finally back. SMU nearly won the league in its ACC debut. Louisville is reloading. Duke has one of the most veteran rosters in the conference. And Florida State? After entering last year ranked No. 10 and finishing 2–10, the Seminoles are a walking drama series. Oh, and Bill Belichick is the head coach at North Carolina. It's a geographically chaotic league, but one thing's for sure: The ACC isn't lacking storylines. Here are a few futures worth circling as we head toward kickoff. Miami's offseason hasn't been quiet. The Hurricanes lost starting QB Cam Ward to the NFL, but quickly turned the page: enter Carson Beck. The former Georgia starter is calm under pressure, efficient against zone coverage and walks into a much friendlier schedule than anything he faced in the SEC. With elite protection, above-average perimeter talent and a coaching staff that finally seems aligned, Beck could be the spark Miami's been chasing for two decades. If he plays to his potential, this is the ACC's best shot at dethroning Clemson. Want chaos? Here it is. Last year's 2-10 implosion was a masterclass in mismanagement and locker-room dysfunction, but there's still raw talent in Tallahassee. Former Boston College quarterback Thomas Castellanos brings a dual-threat spark — his decision-making is a roller coaster, but the upside is there. The early schedule isn't forgiving: Alabama, Miami and a tricky trip to UVA all land before October. But if things somehow click? Florida State could go from embarrassment to ACC dark horse in the blink of an eye. Projected wins: 5.71 I usually subscribe to the "market knows everything" philosophy when a number is this far off, but in this case, I just don't agree with the betting market. Wake Forest brings in a quality coaching staff and pairs it with a roster that has the right pieces in place. The team added talented linemen through the transfer portal to complement an athletic quarterback in Robby Ashford, big-bodied receivers and a solid running-back room. The depth chart is loaded with transfers, but if they jell, this team has the pieces to win games. Projected wins: 5.97 Virginia is feisty. But seven wins? That's asking a lot. The Cavaliers have made some noise in the portal, and the NIL momentum is real, ranking 14th in the nation in money spent (using $12.7 million to build this year's team). Still, reports out of camp suggest some chemistry issues, and the schedule is unforgiving late: three road games in the final four, including a trip out to Cal. Even with a few early wins, this looks like a 5-6 win team that's more competitive than consistent. Projected Wins: 4.99 The Eagles could start hot — there's a world where they hit the bye week at 3-0. But that Week 4 break comes early, and the back half of the season is a gauntlet: Clemson, Louisville, Notre Dame and SMU. Former FIU QB Grayson James is back after starting five games for Boston College last season. With more film on him, I'm not sure James has the skillset to help this team win six games. After making the case for Wake Forest's over on season wins, this conference wins future immediately jumps out as a target. Only two teams in the ACC have their conference win totals set at 1.5: Stanford and Wake Forest. Wake brings in a new coaching staff and a talented roster but faces a brutal schedule that will likely make them underdogs in every ACC matchup. Still, I project them as less than a touchdown underdog against NC State, Oregon State, Virginia and North Carolina. Stanford, on the other hand, is starting over with a new staff but inherits a roster with little winning upside. I project them as less than a touchdown 'dog in just two games: Boston College and Cal. With dead heat rules applying here, Stanford is the clear value play in this market. There's a quiet buzz out of Coral Gables. Beck has reportedly mastered the offense quickly and is drawing rave reviews from coaches and teammates alike. After spending three years grinding through SEC defenses, he now gets the 18th-easiest strength of schedule in the nation — and more time to work through progressions behind a solid offensive line. If Miami wins 10-plus games, Beck will have the numbers — and spotlight — to get to New York. The ACC may not have the top-to-bottom depth of the SEC or Big Ten, but it more than makes up for it with volatility. Clemson is the chalk, but Miami has life, FSU is unpredictable and there's always a surprise team lurking. If you're looking for drama, upsets and long-shot futures with life, this is your conference. Team My Projected Wins BetMGM Win Total Clemson 9.48 9.5 (over -235/under +190) Miami 8.73 9.5 (+130/-155) SMU 8.51 8.5 (-110/-110) Louisville 8.09 8.5 (-160/+135) Florida State 6.96 7.5 (+200/-250) Georgia Tech 6.83 7.5 (-155/+130) Virginia Tech 6.79 6.5 (+115/-140) North Carolina 6.7 7.5 (+140/-165) Duke 6.62 6.5 (-185/+155) Pittsburgh 6.61 6.5 (+130/-155) Virginia 5.97 6.5 (+110/-135) NC State 5.97 6.5 (+110/-130) California 5.82 5.5 (+125/-150) Wake Forest 5.71 4.5 (+105/-125) Boston College 4.99 5.5 (+110/-135) Syracuse 4.78 5.5 (+155/-185) Stanford 3.27 3.5 (+145/-175)

NFL 2025: The brutal cruelty of the preseason injuryNew Foto - NFL 2025: The brutal cruelty of the preseason injury

For most of us, preseason football is the chips and salsa of the football season, an appetizer designed to fire up the taste buds without a whole lot of nutritional value. Football in early August is for the sickos, the hardcores who grind tape while everyone else is wrapping up their summer vacations. Therealstuff won't come around for a few weeks yet. For the players, though, preseason football is all too real. And for an unlucky few, preseason football is devastating, ending years and even careers before most of the country realizes you're playing. [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] Just weeks after signing a massive extension,Chargers tackle Rashawn Slater suffered a torn patellar tendon in practice—freaking practice— on Thursday, ending his season without a single live snap. Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson Sr., who appears to have bones made of spun sugar, left Thursday night's preseason game against Baltimore clutching his armafter taking a sack. Most brutally, Ravens rookie cornerback Bilhal Kone was carted off the field Thursday night in an air cast, victim of season-ending torn ligaments. Injuries are part of the game, part of what you expect when you strap on pads and a helmet and go into battle against other elite physical specimens. (Pretty much everyone who read that spun-sugar sentence above — and especially the clown who wrote it — would be crippled for life after just one full-speed hit from an NFL linebacker.) Still, there's something particularly cruel about a don't-show-the-replay injury suffered before the season even begins. Empathy isn't a particularly valued commodity these days, especially not on a football field. Exhibiting empathy comes perilously close to caring about the welfare of others. And in the next man-up world of football, caring too much can mean the next man up is coming foryou. Even so, spare a thought for the injured players whose names you won't hear the rest of the season and — depending on how rosters and drafts proceed — might not ever hear again. It's a tough way to end a lifelong journey. Richardson, as it turns out, only dislocated his pinky finger and will be taking snaps very soon. Slater has $92 million of his $114 million contract extension guaranteed, so at least he's financially cushioned against the long-term ramifications of the injury. But Kone … man, he's the one you feel for, the latest example of a lifelong journey halted just short of the summit. A sixth-round selection out of Western Michigan, Kone had been projected as a contributor to the Ravens' secondary. But he landed awkwardly after breaking up a would-be Daniel Jones touchdown pass, and the Ravens medical team could tell immediately that the prognosis was as grim as it gets. "Even seeing him in the locker room just now is really hard. Very hard," Ravens head coach John Harbaugh said of Kone following the game. "But I told him, 'The sun will come up tomorrow, you'll get this taken care of. You'll be rehabbing, you're part of our team and you'll be back. So it's just not on the time that you hope for.'" It's a nice sentiment. And in the moment, Harbaugh might even believe it. But the vicious truth of the NFL is that a lost season is more than just a lost opportunity, it's a measurable percentage of a career vaporized. And for a rookie like Kone competing for a roster spot, an injury like this is worse than going back to square one, because there's a whole new crop of players currently in their final year of college who will also be fighting for that spot come 2026. Short of turning preseason football into walking-speed two-hand touch, there's no real way to prevent injuries like this. Player safety is a paramount concern — teams have systematically filed the rough edges off practice in recent decades — but there's only so much that can be done while still respecting the game's inherently violent qualities. Football is a physically crushing game, and taking preseason hits ensures you're ready for the in-season ones. The old line about football players' health is that there's a 100 percent injury rate. You play long enough, you're going to get injured, one way or another. You just have to hope that it's not serious … and that it doesn't come in the first minutes of your career.
